'House' alum Lisa Edelstein heads to 'The Good Wife': Are you dying for her to showdown with Julianna Margulies?

After a rather mind-blowing season 2 for The Good Wife, we were all left wondering: How will series creators Robert and Michelle King up the ante for the show’s coming third season? Well, here’s a step in the right direction: EW has confirmed TV Line’s report that Lisa Edelstein, who recently decided not to return to Fox’s drama House, will be joining the cast of CBS’ beloved drama for a multi-episode arc beginning this fall.

We here at EW are big fans of Edelstein, of course, but that’s not the only reason that her addition seems like a good move. It’s juicy in so many ways. First, she’s been tapped to play a lawyer and poker player whose, TV Line reports, “sexiness is enhanced by her obvious intelligence.” One word: Hot.

But then, it’s also rumored that her character — who hasn’t been named yet — has a past with lawyering honcho Will (Josh Charles). This, of course, throws some complexity into the show, since its season 2 finale finally (finally!) saw Alicia (Julianna Margulies) seal the deal with Will. Does this mean there could be some friction between Alicia and Edelstein’s character? Let’s be real: We all hope so. Can you just imagine those two trying to steamroll each other for the guy who worked at Clown Dog in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead? It’s genius.

Of course, Edelstein’s character likely won’t only have personal interactions on the show. Seeing as how she’s being slugged as a skilled poker player, there’s so much for the Kings to mine there in the court room. What, exactly? That I don’t know. And that’s why I leave the writing of such a smart show to smart people like the Kings.

What do you think of Lisa’s addition to The Good Wife this fall? Does it seem like the right move? Are you salivating over a showdown between her character and Alicia? Sound off in the comments below!

i am dehydrated by my salivating! Can the Good Wife do no wrong when it comes to picking guest stars! how did i end up having my favorite TV show on basic TV and not cable! how did that happen?

two raven haired beauties on one great drama.Very excited for the new season

  • Matt

That sounds…lame. I wonder if she was unhappy at House; she’s not doing movies or art work, she’s leaving to do another network tv show, and the show she left was the more prominent and celebrated of the two.

    • Sarah

Prominent, maybe. Celebrated? Not for the last several years…
Good for Lisa. Glad she’ll be on a show that has some of the best female roles on TV.

    • Caitlyn

The Good Wife gets more nominations and critical praise these days. House is aging and more importantly the female characters on House are treated poorly and not fleshed out that well. As an actress it’s better for her to work on a show where the women aren’t just there to further the male story lines.

    • Tania

She was UNHAPPY with her contract negotiations. Clearly she was eager to come back for Season 8; She said as much. No doubt the wrench thrown in (the proposed pay cut in her salary) ultimately led to her departure from House. Fact.

I trust the Kings to make this character a great addition…love this show so much…

  • KC

    Hudlicia?
I cringe at the morphing names EW will come up with.

  • Tha Phoenix

LOVE this. I had a mental orgasm when I heard the news.

  • Sarah

But did they actually seal the deal? I seem to remember that all we saw was the door shutting?

    • Judy

Finally someone else who thinks that at the last moment a phone call from the kids and the “sealed deal” might not be sealed. Just ’cause the door closed …well we have to wait and see.

      • Annie

Why is everyone hoping for Alicia and Will to get together. She seemed to be the only trustworthy and moral character on the show. Now she will just be another person capable of lying and cheating like everyone else if the situation is right. You can point to Peter’s adultery, but two wrongs do not make it a right. Now Will is an adulterer also. I don’t see why adultery should be entertainment. Get a divorce if you want to sleep around. I am not basing this on any religous thing at all, I am not traditionally religious. But I believe in morality and if you promise fidelitly to someone, you are breaking your word and your promise. Doesn’t matter what the other person did first. Get a divorce if you can’t live with it. How trustworhty are you in any other situation then.

      • Ashley

Didn’t Alicia tell Peter that their marriage was over thus nullifying any marital responsibility they had to each other? It’s all well and good to preach morality, but a signed divorce document, required by law, does not equal a marriage being over in your heart.

No mention of the Sports Night story line with both Lisa and Josh??

    • mkaffeine

[Sorry, Rach: didn't see your post until after I posted mine!]

  • doctorevil

oh. my. god. this story just goes to show why i truly love this magazine– clown dog!!! onlly ew would reference the wonderfully cheesy movie we all secretly love watchign on a random hungover sunday afternoon but would never admit it. the dishes are done, man!!

    • K.R.

My husband and I are in our 40′s and we often say “The dishes are done, man!” when we finish cleaning the kitchen. Clown dog. Awesome.

      • Cary

        Ditto that!

  • mkaffeine

So, will Josh’s character forget that he once slept with Lisa’s character years and years ago until she presents him with a picture of the two of them together at which point he will sincerely apologize … and then relay some sports scores?

  • jfms777

Yes, another smart move for TGW.

  • Mincha

Good for her and the show! This will probably be a breath of fresh air for her.

  • Tfan08

Well if its rumor she’s has a history with Will…maybe the Kings’ will have her character as a friend of Eli’s – helping him spy on Alicia and Will. Or another women Peter slept with. The possibilities are endless!!

  • mp

Yes, it’s more in keeping with her acting technique.

  • Lena

As long as she’s not on “House” anymore, and that ridiculous Huddy arc is no longer in play, I’m happy.

    • mp

      Me too.

    • Caitlyn

What makes you think they won’t write something equally ridiculous for the remaining characters. I wasn’t a big Cameron fan but the show didn’t get better when she left. The problem is with the writing not the actors. If they were more consistent writers you would have liked the Huddy arc.

      • Lena

Well, yeah, the writers have obviously been hitting the crackpipe for a while now. But, no, I wouldn’t have enjoyed no matter how it was written. I just didn’t care for them together – not the right kind of chemistry.

    • Cathy

I loved Cuddy and thought Lisa and Hugh had great chemistry. I will miss her on “house” but am excited about her upcoming arc on TGW.
