'Bridesmaids' MVPs Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm could star in Paul Feig/Judd Apatow project

Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm both had so many memorable and hilarious lines/scenes/moments in this year’s smash comedy Bridesmaids, but sadly, none of them were delivered together. (I would have loved to seen the outspoken Megan put major d-bag Ted in his place, wouldn’t you?)

Luckily, that might all change, according to a report from Deadline. The two stars could be teaming up — really, for the first time — for a project with Universal Pictures, Paul Feig, and Judd Apatow about a man (Hamm) who becomes obsessed with a woman (McCarthy) in an “unconventional love story.”

Apatow’s camp tells EW that it’s “too premature” to tell whether the duo will star on screen together, but premature or not, this news has me even more excited than I’d be driving a van full of puppies. (Or even imagining a possible Bridesmaids sequel.) As much as I would like to watch the talented cast work their magic again (that magic, of course, being making me laugh so hard I’m fairly certain I stopped breathing at one point), I’m even more stoked at the prospect of them becoming part of Apatow’s comedy rat pack. (Who doesn’t love when alums like Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, or Seth Rogen reunite to film a project together?)

So you best believe my hopes are still pretty high on this one, regardless of the fact that details are scant. Will it be more in the vein of the Neil LaBute play Fat Pig than say, the shallow Gwyneth Paltrow/Jack Black comedy Shallow Hal? Who knows? But should the seemingly infallible Hamm (seriously, what can’t he do?) and rising star McCarthy hop on board, it’s tough to imagine they wouldn’t knock it out of the park.

What do you think about the possibility of Hamm and McCarthy starring together in a movie, PopWatchers? (One day we’ll get Hamm and BublĂ©.) Which other Bridesmaids cast members do you want to see re-team up?

Sounds awesome. Just toss in some Maya Rudolph. Add Nick Offerman. Sprinkle a few appearances by Amy Poehler. Mix them together, and we’ll have a bowl of delicious awesomeness!

That honestly sounds like the perfect cast. Actually, why not add every Parks and Rec cast member?

let melissa have handsomeness involved. I have loved Jon Hamm forever. ESPECIALLY on 30 Rock.

Its about time the “unconventional” girl, who is not just a pretty, skinny chick with no makeup, but someone who normally doesn’t get the guy in the movies, get the guy!

    Did that make sense?

Totally agree. I love the idea of this movie.

Love this. I … don’t have any more words. Please make this happen.

Agree with Anya. We’ve seen so many rom-coms and sitcoms about an ordinary guy and a stunning woman. Let’s turn the tables and see what happens! I hope this movie gets made

LOVE this! I’ve been a fan of Melissa for a long time and have been waiting for her to make it big. I’m so glad she’s getting accolades now. I really hope this happens. Hamm is awesome too and I know they would make a great pair onscreen.

Loved Hamm & Buble. One of the best eps of SNL in a long, long time. What made me love MB’s music.

I’d just like to point out that they were also both on Gilmore Girls (Jon Hamm very briefly, I admit) and also did not meet there. So this is long overdo. Geek moment over.

@Luddite – I remember watching a rerun of GG and seeing Jon Hamm and squealing. I love seeing actors in things before they were stars.

I think the idea of a Melissa and Jon romance is brilliant. Would definitely be first in line to see that movie.

Also I will never forgive Michael Ausielo for coining the phrase “I sookied that.” Melissa I hope you are laughing all the way to the bank!

I love this. I once saw a movie (Nine) where Melissa McCarthy and Ryan Reynolds were a couple and I totally buy her as the female love interest. She is awesome. Add in the fact that this is a comedy of the Apatow variety and Jon Hamm is both gorgeous and surprisingly funny and this is the perfect situation.

Bonus points if they could get Lauren Graham to play *her* sidekick in the movie.

As much as I love this idea, still not that ground-breaking. Being a raunchy comedy, the scenario of fat girl/skinny guy will be obviously played for laughs and will certainly keep audiences distracted. Sadly, Hollywood will never have the balls to actually give someone who looks like Melissa McCarthy a romantic drama, or an erotic drama, because it would be “disgusting” to see a fat woman naked or having sex in a context that is not comedic or caricaturesque. Hollywood, prove me wrong…

I gotta say, as attractive as Jon Hamm is, when he dresses down, he dresses DOWN and just doesn’t look that appealing to me. I think it would be extremely plausible for her to be considered the beautiful one in this couple and I would be extremely happy to see it happen.

  • helena

Hey Ali, REALLY nice of you to assume that the premise of the movie will be weight-related. Idiot.

  • Anne

Um, why does having McCarthy as the romantic lead mean that the movie is automatically going to be like “Shallow Hal” or “Fat Pig”???? No one assumed that when Seth Rogan played a romantic lead, as in Knocked Up (and indeed, it wasn’t about his weight), so why does it have to be the case here?? *Sigh*

  • tracy bluth

I really, really, really hope this happens. These two would be amazing together.

  • elena

that’s all I have to say to that.
I literally don’t even care what movie idea it is…the combined awesomeness of these two together might make the world implode.
