Rob Lowe to play alleged killer Drew Peterson in Lifetime movie. Can this work?

Rob Lowe will star as accused wife-killer Drew Peterson in the tentatively titled Drew Peterson Story, Lifetime confirms. As initially reported by Deadline, The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco will costar as former Illinois police sergeant¬†Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, who disappeared in 2007 when she was 23 and Peterson was 53. While Peterson enjoyed the media attention while professing his innocence (her body has never been found), authorities did arrest him in 2009 — for allegedly murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose 2004 death had initially been ruled an accidental drowning.

Forget for a moment that Lowe is way more attractive than the Peterson, who is 10 years his senior, with gray hair and a mustache. (Please let Rob Lowe have gray hair and a mustache!) I think this will be an interesting role for him on his Parks and Recreation hiatus.¬†Thanks to his innate likability and charm, we’ll buy that these young women fall for him. But because he has his own interesting past (albeit nothing like Peterson’s), we’re also open to the possibility that he’s capable of doing things that need to be hidden.

For those thinking it’s strange that Lowe would do a Lifetime movie now, remember he starred in the network’s 2009 adaptation of Ann Rule’s Too Late to Say Goodbye, which was inspired by the true story of an outwardly charming couple whose secret affairs result in the wife’s alleged suicide. “A movie like this, when I was growing up, would have been a movie. You’d have gone to the theater, you would have seen it,” Lowe said in 2009. “These movies aren’t made anymore, and in the last five years, they’re not made on television either — except in very specific places. One of ‘em is Lifetime, and they do it really, really well. So I’m glad they’re makin’ stuff like this, on Lifetime.”

Rob Lowe can play a really creepy dude

    • Doola

I was going to say this. I’m not gonna lie sometimes Rob Lowe gets this intense look in his eyes that really scares me. Haha! I think he could do this no problem.

      • harry

        I 2nd that!!!

      • Stormy

The real Drew Peterson looks more like Tim Allen. Rob Lowe is a poor choice.

  • Dee Jones

    Yeah I could see this.

  • dhppy

This seems like a step down for him. I’ve watched some Lifetime movies. They’re truly awful.

  • Annie

Living in the Chicagoland area, I am well aware of the Drew Peterson case. Rob is too young, too good looking and too slender to play Drew, but he does do creepy very well.

  • IDreader

He’s too young compared to Peterson, not to mention the physical differences between them, but he can totally pull off Peterson’s creepy personality.
Mark Harmon was always considered a pretty boy too, but he was creepy as he** when he played Ted Bundy in “The Deliberate Stranger.”

    • my opinion

And to this day, that’s the only thing I remember Mark Harmon for. Even with his huge body of work to date- Creepy Ted Bundy is STUCK in my head. I don’t want Rob Lowe to be stuck in my head for being creepy!!!!

      • brandi

OMG! Me too! I was pretty young when that came out, but still to this day I see him and think Ted Bundy.

      • Anne

Oh, me too. And I want SO MUCH to like everything about Mark Harmon, but every time I see him, I see Ted Bundy.

  • kate middleton

Yeah, he doesn’t look the part, but I think he can totally pull it off.

  • Jenna

this man is so fine. i love him i wish i was an 80’s child for that reason alone

  • Valley Girl

Sure, Rob Lowe can play evil, and well, as evidenced by “Bad Influence” back in the day.

  • diana c.

This sounds like a definite must see movie he is a good convincing actor

  • Juanita

    Que Bello!

  • Zzzzz zzzz

Read his book. It’s very entertaining.

  • JAP

Rob is a great actor, he can do nearly anything… That said, I don’t see him portraying this character. Scott Peterson , yes, Drew, no…

    • Mae

yes! when i read this i immediately thought of scott peterson – and kaley as amber frey(was that her name?)

  • Linda

Rob Lowe, playing the role of Drew Peterson is brillant. Can’t wait to see the movie.

  • CylonRyder

He can pull it off. He did creepy very well in Californication last season.

  • Anne

They are going to have to SERIOUSLY ugly him up for the role. And while Lowe can do charming very well, I can’t see why in the world the concept of “charming” would EVER be associated with Drew Peterson.
