EW was the first to present to you the kids from The Glee Project, Oxygen’s reality show centered around finding the next cast member of Glee, and since then, the wanna-be misfits (strange paradox…) have released their first music video. Now I find myself in a first impression pickle a cynic like myself rarely experiences: I like a lot of them. Check out the video below, and then let’s chat:
Based on the vocals in the video and the getting-to-know you videos posted on Oxygen, I easily have at least three favorites from the highly caffeinated bunch. And when you’re picking someone to join a group as collectively beloved as Glee, you have to be picky. You want someone who could not only carry a tune — but a storyline. Someone unique like Kurt, as animated as Rachel, but just a little dorky like, well, all of them. And a good-looking face is not so bad, either.
So taking my strict criteria into account, my frontrunners (in no particular order) based on these sneak peeks are:
– McKynleigh, the Kentucky native with a knack for country music. I love how she’s does not fall into the typical “diva” bracket that one would immediately want to put her in. Mercedes fills that role just fine, and I love the idea of bringing in someone who’s a curve ball. She’s also gorgeous without being typical (or in the case of Lindsay, she’s not a Quinn clone!).
– Irish pretty boy Damian. I can forgive the cheese-tastic wink in the video and focus instead on the fact that while a little on the boring side in terms of package (he doesn’t have an obvious story writers could craft for him), I like the idea of a blank slate. That might help writers really think of something outside the box for him. Also, he has a foreign accent, which immediately gives him an advantage in my eyes.
– Lanky hipster Cameron. What’s not to like?
That’s not to say I’m counting out the likes of Ellis (who looks about 13 years old), Hannah, or the aforementioned Lindsay, either. But that’s just my first impression.
Check out the video below, PopWatchers. And tell me: Who are your early favorites?

When day/time does this show come on?
Starts June 12 on Oxygen
I think I’ll be busy that day, week, month, year, etc.
bully for you!
Cameron is my early fave. He just seems like he would fit right in.
I’m Team Cameron also.
I instantly liked Cameron when I first saw this on TV.
am I the only one who thinks that all of these people are a bit too much? …kinda like they are all trying too hard or something?
No, I agree. Especially the kid in blue. Ugh.
Agreed… please no.
yup that’s what I was thinking. Cameron seemed just right though. He’s the only one that I kinda wanted to see what they might do with him.
I’m kind of in love with Cameron, but I want the Irish kid to win mostly because I think the glee club needs a guy with a lower voice.
I like Damien but I’m a fan of the cheesy Celtic Thunder, so I might be biased. Since he’s already seen a good deal of success, I’d rather see one of the kids get a start of their own. The pretty African-American girl with short hair as a terrific voice, as does the red-head.
Cameron has a good voice and personality…he would be a good male lead, and maybe then Glee can stop the constant Finn solos.
Bryce will get through based on his good looks.
Am I the only one that thinks a reality show is too much? I like Glee, and I haven’t given up on it yet. If this next season doesn’t get better I’ll probably quit (same thing happened to me with Heroes, quit halfway into the third season.) But why do a reality show? Even if you want to give fans the chance to be on the show, do it without cameras. It sort of makes Glee seem like a joke.
Please dont pick the fat chick or the gay dude.
aka every viewer of the show (myself included). I’m holding onto my last threads of hope that Glee hasn’t totally jumped the shark, but if it wasn’t already oversaturated, this show just adds to it. I know it’s Glee, but could we ask for a little subtlety from any of these contestants?
LOL I love Glee but the “jumped the shark” the first episode LOL! The show is one stunt after another. I just accept it. My issues is the storyline repeat. How can we tell the same story 20 different ways? The writers seem to have a short attention span and instead digging into a character or a story they zip through them til there’s nothing left. Well accept with Kurt which they grabbed hold of and milked for all it’s worth. But hey I still love the show inspite of my irritation.
Alex (or at least what he represents.) How many gay black teens can you think of in movies or TV?
Also he working the camera in the video.
Very true, but he seems like a bit much.
He’s too much of restricted automatic diva-type. His sass is too overcompensating and in-your-face, and if he ever toned it down, which would be appropriate in most situations, you’d just be reminded he’s a marginal voice and person most are inclined to feel uncomfortable and embarrassed for.
I have no problem with a gay black teen but he seemed like a male version of Mercedes in the video and kind of stereotypical. The show has cheerleaders, football players, the gay boy, the diva, I’d like to see a girl misfit or nerd character.
Cameron is my early fave too. I also like McKynleigh and Hannah. I’m on the fence about Samuel.
In my opinion they look like a lot like the characters they already have on glee
Definitely like Samuel, I loved in his promo that he had a story that could easily fit into the glee-universe (the rock band boy that loses his band and doesn’t want to give up on music). I think it would diversify the Glee kids a lot more to have a real rocker amongst the group ( How awesome would it be to have him do a rendition of Sweet Child of Mine!?!).
Absolutely agree!
Voicewise I’m liking Emily an dHannah
Good thing they’re expanding the cast. It’s not big enough.
@PJ: Best laugh out loud comment so far. Thanks.
Haha lol I completely agree
