Paul Revere, Randy Jackson, and a Weiner scandal -- now that's entertainment.

All those PopWatchers out there who think blogs about politics have no place on an entertainment website obviously haven’t been watching cable TV news this week. There’s been comedy. There’s been pathos. There’s been Anthony Weiner’s underpants. Even Republican candidate for president Rick Santorum couldn’t help mixing a little pop culture into his campaign, launching his candidacy at a rally in Pennsylvania on Monday with Randy Jackson’s catchphrase from American Idol 2011, “We’re in it to win it.” Of course, a little later that morning, Santorum had a new catchphrase — “humina humina” — when he appeared onGood Morning America and was grilled by George Stephanopoulos over his assertion that America’s enemies didn’t fear President Obama. “Where’s the evidence of that?” Stephanopoulos pressed him. “The al-Qaeda leadership has been decimated, Osama bin Laden is dead, no significant attack against the United States has been successful. Where is that evidence?”

Fortunately for Santorum, Sarah Palin continues her scene-stealing tour. If the video this weekend of Palin in Boston reciting her own inimitable version of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride doesn’t qualify as entertainment — ”He warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking our arms by ringing those bells… ” — then I don’t know what does. Making matters even more, yes, entertaining, she’s still not admitting she made a mistake: She went on Fox News Sunday and not only defended her answer (“I know my American history,” she told Chris Wallace), but also accused the local newspaper reporter who asked her the question of “gotcha” tactics. The question the lamestream media reporter asked before Palin launched into her Revere-y: “What have you seen today and what are you going to take away from your visit?”

But, of course, the most gripping moment of political TV so far this week was Anthony Weiner’s tearful press conference in New York yesterday, during which rightwing blogger Andrew Breitbart weirdly seemed to be the warm-up act for the congressman’s stunning confession — yes, that really was a photograph of his mid-section, and yes, he did indeed tweet it to a 21-year-old college girl. As far as I’m concerned, that 30 minutes of excruciating self-excoriation was about as riveting as reality TV ever gets.

But what do you think Pop Watchers? These events more than anything deserve the “Politics as Entertainment” tag, yes?

I think that Sarah Palin didn’t mean warn the British in the sense that Paul Revere was trying to help them, I think she means warn the British like telling them what they can’t do. I think. But she’s still a nitwit idiot.

    • Ms. Chanandler Bong

No one was trying to warn the British! That’s the whole point!

      • Ru

THANK YOU! I mean, I guess I can’t even blame her for not possessing a 5th grader’s understanding of history, but just thinking about it logically – why would he have warned our ENEMIES that we knew about their upcoming supposedly-secret attack? Even saying it out loud sounds idiotic. To think that this woman could have been one heartbeat away from being commander in chief literally gives me the chills.

      • allie

yea i know! paul revere was warning the townspeople that the british were coming. everyone knows that! she’s an idiot

    • jmo

I think another point to take away from it was the fact she had JUST visited the Revere historical site.

And she visited with her children. Wouldn’t you want to make sure you’re children learned something while your there? Even when I take my kids to the zoo, I make sure they learn something about the animals they see…

      • ks

        IKR!!!

      • allie

yea but jmo, you’d want the kids to learn the RIGHT information

    • Redeyecat

Obviously that’s what she meant and she is 100% correct about that. It’s hilarious to hear all these bozos attack her when they don’t know what they are talking about. Do some research! Start with NPR’s fact check if you need help…

      • kate

Even if that’s what she meant, have you seen the video clip? Her answer to the question is the most incoherent, unintelligent and roundabout statement I have heard in awhile. You should probably know how to speak correctly if you want to be a leader.

      • Ms. Chanandler Bong

        Yeah, obviously! Not…

      • Squishmar

I love your username Ms. Bong! Yes, to me the problem is how she presents herself. Can you really imagine her representing this country around the world? She is definitely not a great communicator.

Little Know fact: A man named Israel Bissel traveled some 300+ miles warning people from Mass to Phillie about the incoming British. His poem was entitled “Ride, Israel, ride” and was not as poular as “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” and his 7 mile ride. History by way of Marketing 101: Name recognition is very important and made easier by a common name.
      Google my facts.

    • stu

      randy jackson is a weiner.

    • Anne

The well-known fable is Revere’s late-night ride to warn fellow revolutionaries that…the British were coming. Less known, obviously, is the rest of the evening’s events in which Revere was captured by said redcoats and did indeed defiantly warn them of the awakened militia awaiting their arrival ahead and of the American Revolution’s inevitable victory.

Palin knew this. The on-scene reporters did not and ran off like Revere to alert the world to Palin’s latest mis-speak, which wasn’t.

      • LoveBug68

WRONG – if that is what she truly meant then why when Wallace asked her if mispoke didn’t she say “yes, I left out the part about referring to when he was captured”…but no she cannot admit that because the fact is she cannot process that much information and everything she heard that day came out in a total mumble jumble. She is an idiot. And an arrogant idiot. You can’t call it a gotcha question just because it got you!

      • ron

And the part about him warning the people by firing off his gun and ringing bells is also correct?

    • A

Furthermore, he wasn’t ringing bells. Lights were lit in the North Church Bell Tower so that he could ride through the towns warning the Colonist that the British were coming

  • Ms. Chanandler Bong

No one holds a gun to Palin’s head to answer those kinds of questions although we do have the right to bear those arms! She digs her own grave. Everyone treats Presidential Elections like the ultimate reality competition so that’s how it will always play out online.

  • Dicazi

Anytime Palin makes a gaffe, it’s always the fault of the media person asking the question. What could be more entertaining than that??

  • Marc

I, for one, think it’s perfectly appropriate for EW to report on the more entertaining political stories of the day. Politics – and the reporting of it by various network and cable programs – play an increasing role in pop culture that far exceeds providing fodder for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. If Sarah Palin isn’t a reality TV star, I don’t know who is.

  • ceecee

If you look at Narcissist in the dictionary, I bet Palin picture’s going to be on it. What an embarrasment to America. And it’s scary that some people actually take her seriously.

    • Esox

Therrrrrrrrre’s no pictures in the dictonaryyy.

      • Squishmar

Yes, there are a lot of drawings in the dictionary. But next to “narcissist” I’m afraid an illustration of Donald Trump will have a standing reservation.

  • Tully

    Idiots and perverts…

  • Buffy Freak

As someone pointed out this week (Jon Stewart I think), were you right with your answer Sarah, or was it a “gotcha” question? Not really sure how it can be both…if she answered it correctly, she wouldn’t be bitching about the intent of the question, which it turns out was probably the most innocuous question ever. Was her report in third grade about What I Did On My Summer Vacation a “gotcha” assignment?

  • Rodin

Paul revere did warn the british not to go to lexington since there was a militia that would fight back. Paul revere never said the british were coming. That is just a legend. Please research. In other words, palin was right.

    • jessica

Sounds like someone has been perusing the edited-recently-by-Palin-supporters-Wikipedia.

      • jmo

You heard about that too? Isn’t Rodin and people like that sad? Rather than to be human and humble and admit you’re wrong they go the other way.

        2+2=5
The world is flat (and only 5000 years old)
        Sarah is always right

    • Buffy Freak

Well if she’s right, then why is she yet again whining about a “gotcha” question? People don’t usually complain about a question being biased or “gotcha” if they answer correctly.

    • Ru

Why on earth would Revere have warned the British that American troops were going to be PREPARED for their attack?
Just think about that for one second. You know, with logic – that thing that Sarah Palin doesn’t seem to possess.
Then step away from the computer and go pick up a BOOK and find out what really happened – including the part where Revere was unsuccessful in his mission and it was actually two other individuals who succeeded at warning the colonists that the BRITISH were coming.

      • mujer

        Isreal Bissel

      • jmo

Sorry Ru, Rodin can’t think logically.
He’s been indoctrinated by Rush and Beck and that end-of-days guy that’s worth $18M but needs your money (of gold, so sell now!).

      • Redeyecat

Sorry Ru – do some real research. “Paul Revere was captured by the British during his midnight ride. He was questioned at gunpoint and actually did warn the British that Lexington was fortified and they would suffer a great loss if they continued on. This was done to turn the troops back. It worked and the British returned to inform the Generals. The rest is history like it or not.”
        – credit to phscoach.

Listen to NPR’s fact check if you aren’t afraid of embarrassing yourself.

      • Buffy Freak

Yes Redeye…but this not even close to Palin’s understanding and explanation of it…

      • Sam J

mujer is right, but the spelling is ISRAEL. Read Sam J above. ^^^^^^

      • Ru

        Redeyecat:
Seriously? You think that Sarah Palin was referring to the fact that after Revere failed in his initial mission and he revealed (at gunpoint) that the colonists would be prepared for the British attack? Really? Because it sounds to me like she said, “He rode off to warn the British that they weren’t going to take our arms and fired those shots and rang those bells” or some nonsense. When he set off, he had NO intention of telling the British ANYTHING, and everyone knows that, and anyone who accidentally misspoke would either clarify that they made a mistake or explain what you did — that Revere did eventually, UNDER DURESS, reveal the plan and that they just explained that badly. Sarah Palin didn’t do either one of those things. The woman is pathologically incapable of admitting that she makes even tiny mistakes.

  • Ms. Chanandler Bong

    He’s kidding right?!

  • Merry Bear

All this delicious political entertainment and it’s not even August yet.

    • Squishmar

      I know, right?

  • Feverishkin

    Wow!l….just…..wow!!

  • Mishelley

Stop! you are getting me excited! George “Snuffy” Snuffleupagus really had a hard time with her – but politics and entertainment more than ever are intertwined – which is how I categorize her, a political entertainer

  • Sofia

“What have you seen today and what are you going to take away from your visit?”

That was the question asked. No one asked her about Paul Revere, or how the Colonists planned to start the American Revolutionary war to gain independence from Britain. It was, ‘what have you seen and what are you taking away from this? She couldn’t even answer that simple question. It’s like taking a tour of the Titanic Museum, being asked that question and going on to say that the iceberg “HIT” the Titanic and the iceberg sank. This woman is a complete idiot!!!!

And honestly, I have NO IDEA why the media is following her, what’s the purpose? Does she honestly believe that the Republican party will choose her over Mitt Romney to run against Obama? Come on, that is NOT going to happen.

I think that the media is following her around to provide fodder for comedians, that’s all. Because comedians seem to gain more from her huge mistakes than anyone else……………

    • ger

Thanks for letting everyone know what the supposed “gotcha” question was. It was a fairly broad question and she tried to turn her answer into a pro-gun answer.

And by the way, I’m Canadian and even I know what Paul Revere did.

      • justjack

Thanks ger, you made me LOL. :)

  • Ally

There was a comment on Ann Coulter removed on here..think that’s what was getting you hot…her thesis that the left is organized by mob political slogans..or collective thinking on issues..like with Palin…the Weiner man though c’mon is apolitical..it brings back our youth..so I thank him for that..but as far as him getting into serious political debate again..c’mon who’s gonna take him seriously anymore ..he should have made his apology on a Friday..his only hope is for aliens landing on the White House lawn bearing gifts of a cheap energy supply to save the planet earth

  • Maeve

I heard that the press was complaining because Sarah Palin’s tour bus didn’t issue a list of its destinations so they just had to follow it around from place to place. Here’s a solution…stop following the bus! Let her drive around and visit historical sites and not learn from them. And please don’t ask her whether she is running for president, one of these days she may just say yes. God help us.
