Glenn Beck's last show on Fox News: Woo hoo!

I have to admit, I got choked up watching Glenn Beck walk away from his blackboard for the last time today. As he signed off the Fox News Network with the final segment of The Glenn Beck Show, I couldn’t help but think back on so many misty water-colored memories. Like the time he called President Obama a “racist” who “hated white people.” Or the time he illustrated his opinion on U.S. energy policy by dousing a guest in gasoline and lighting a match. Or, just a few months ago, the time he predicted that the world was coming to an end. Turns out it wasn’t the world — just his TV show.

Obviously, I’m not all that sorry to see Beck go. But even so — let’s be honest here — Beck’s final episode was hardly up there with M*A*S*H in terms of historic TV finales. READ FULL STORY »

Well lords and ladies of the Dance, after last week’s bloodbath, could it be anybody’s game? Will Kristin Chenoweth and Lil’ C perform a duet to “Ebony & Ivory”? Or will Lil’ C simply continue to wax nonsensical, for it is indeed what he does best? Will Nigel put on his happy face for just a little while? Discuss it all as it goes down live, and we’ll reveal the results shortly after the episode closes. Enjoy the show! UPDATE: The results are in. Who got the Dance boot? READ FULL STORY »

'Chelsea Lately' tops 'Conan' in ratings. What's she doing right?

Team Coco better call for backup, because Chelsea Handler is coming for them. According to ratings reports, Chelsea Lately surpassed His Gingerness in ratings for the first time in June, averaging 959,000 to Conan‘s 851,000.

A number of half-baked theories could be used as reasons why ratings fell in Handler’s favor this month (Pilot buzz? Book/tour success?), but one thing is clear: She’s doing something right. READ FULL STORY »

Brooklyn Decker joins 'What To Expect When You're Expecting' cast: Could she be the first true supermodel-turned-movie star?

The model-turned-actress — like the singer-turned-actor or singer-turned-actor-turned-back-to-singer-cause-the-acting-didn’t-work-out — is nothing new in Hollywood. In fact, it’s given the industry the likes of Cameron Diaz, Halle Berry and Charlize Theron.

While Brooke Shields certainly made a splash in 1980 with The Blue Lagoon, it would be hard to argue she became a full-fledged movie star (on television, however, most certainly). Because, as far as supermodels go, none have really been able to make that transition. Just watch Cindy Crawford in Fair Game. Better yet, don’t. That’s not to say, some models haven’t become successful actresses, because there are scads of those (Rebecca Romijn, Portia de Rossi, Milla Jovovich, for example), but when it comes to supermodels as full-fledged movie stars, well, their best work has remained on the runway. (Reviews of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s performance in this weekend’s already massively successful Transformers: Dark of the Moon would suggest her skill set begins and ends at being really, really good looking.)

But, don’t lose hope yet, PopWatchers, because there’s still Brooklyn Decker! READ FULL STORY »

What 'dynamic duos' should return to 'Big Brother' this season?

By now, you’ve heard the big twist with the new season of Big Brother: Eight new houseguests will be joined by “some of the most dynamic duos from the show’s history.” Everyone is already talking about their favorite possibilities (Jeff and Jordan, Team Chilltown) and their least favorite (“Evel” Dick and Daniele, the Brendon/Rachel crazy train of love and lies). Over at Big Brother‘s website, you can even vote on some famous duos…although those votes don’t seem to really matter, since CBS has presumably already social-engineered the Big Brother 13 cast to include maximum drama/idiocy. But I’d like to propose my own favorite duo. They’re not in a relationship, and they don’t have an exciting name, but in their own way they were both dynamic competitors. I’m talking about Matt and Ragan from season 12. READ FULL STORY »

'The Voice': 5 things that worked, 5 things that didn't

With the first season of The Voice in the books, and all four coaches set to return for another go round, let’s analyze what producers did right, and what they may want to fix…

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

• All the talking. Particularly painful was watching Christina Aguilera try to find the balance of not sounding like she was rooting for other coaches’ contestants and not sounding like she was avoiding praising them. I always found that she failed with Dia. READ FULL STORY »

Critics have a hard time disliking 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'

At first glance, it seems that critics are, as per usual, taking pot shots at director Michael Bay’s latest blow-’em-up blockbuster, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. “Breathtakingly dumb” and “too much of only a semi-good thing” are but a couple of the phrases being used to describe the third movie in the franchise. Roger Ebert says it is “one of the more unpleasant experiences I’ve had at the movies.” But upon closer examination, one can find some creatively passive-aggressive praise hidden in the disdain for this popcorn flick, which EW’s Lisa Schwarzbaum gives a respectable, not-quite-glowing-but-still-mostly-satisfied B (though she also says it’s “hardly a fleet production”). To wit, a few examples:  READ FULL STORY »

What's your all-time favorite movie trailer?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

It’s been said a hundred times before, and it remains true: The best part about going to the movies (well, besides eating $7 candy and actually watching the movie you paid to see) is the trailers. But enjoying trailers has gone well beyond watching roughly 73 of them before your film starts. And if you were a super pop-culture nerd from an early age like me, you enjoyed previews so much you never dared to fast-forward through them on your VHS. (C’mon, you had to watch the FernGully preview before Home Alone started, didn’t you?)

With the winners of the 12th Annual Golden Trailer awards having just been announced (The Social Network, was rightfully rewarded, among other wins, with the Best in Show trophy), and the fact that trailers can be enjoyed online whenever we want, it got me thinking about my all-time favorite trailer. Vancouver baseball team looks to 'Major League' to sell tickets

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Playing minor league baseball in Canada can sometimes feel especially “minor.” Hockey is by far the nation’s passion, and Major League Baseball gave up on the Montreal Expos years ago. In fact, the only MLB-affiliated minor-league franchise plays in relative obscurity in Vancouver, but at least they’re doing something about it. The second-place Canadians are taking a page out of the Major League handbook to sell some tickets. Kudos to the promotional manager who put together this homage to the 1989 baseball comedy, a film that came out before some of these players were even born. Watch the clip and then the original faux American Express commercial that got the Cleveland Indians noticed. READ FULL STORY »

Stephen Colbert files for political action committee after 5-1 FEC ruling

Stephen Colbert claimed victory today after the Federal Election Commission granted him a unique loophole to use his network’s finances to run his newly formed political action committee. In a 5-1 decision, commissioners granted the Comedy Central comic a media exemption to campaign finance rules that will allow The Colbert Report to produce ads supporting or opposing federal candidates.

After the ruling, Colbert filed papers to officially create Colbert Super PAC and then addressed a crowd of supporters outside:“It has been said that freedom isn’t free. Today, we have placed a sizable down payment. Today, we put liberty on layaway.” Watch his speech after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
