Now that we’ve debated which contestants have been the strongest final two in American Idol history, it’s time to watch the youngest-ever Last Teens Standing — Lauren Alaina and Scott McCreery — fling themselves at the feet of the three Fates… and then gossip about ‘em!

Chat here about American Idol‘s performance show, then come back later for EW.com’s full recap and a detailed on-the-scene report from Adam B. Vary. (Note: The incredible, edible Kate Ward is stepping in to write tonight’s performance recap because that pesky Dancing With the Stars finale airs simultaneously, but I’ll be back to write tomorrow night’s Idol finale recap.)

This. Is the homestretch. And THIS! Is Entertainment Weekly.

UPDATE: Did Lauren Alaina almost drop out of the ‘American Idol’ finale? Her music coach gives EW the exclusive scoop

Jane Lynch may host Emmys, but would you prefer that Sue Sylvester take over?

Ricky Gervais got a lot of flack for his most recent Golden Globe hosting gig, in which he flung some stinging, if not hilarious, one-liners at some Hollywood A-listers. Now, imagine instead you’ve got McKinley High School’s Cheerios coach Sue Sylvester at the helm of a prestigious awards ceremony with the biggest stars in television at her mercy. That Gervais uproar would become mere child’s play, would it not?

While Sue Sylvester isn’t exactly hosting any awards shows any time soon, the multi-talented funny lady who plays her on Glee very well may be. As we reported earlier, Lynch is nearing a deal to host the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards later this year. And Lynch knows her way around the Emmys: The multi-talented star picked up a trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series last year for her work as the over-the-top villain on Glee.

But, how much will — and should — Lynch go into the Glee well? READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' countdown: New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made

UPDATE: Glee season finale recap is live!

We’ve been building up to this all season on Glee, and now Nationals in New York are finally upon us! New Directions will get to sing Broadway showtunes on Broadway, and everyone (except for New Yorkers) loves lavish song-and-dance numbers on city streets, especially when balloons and dancing law enforcement officers are involved. We’ve been promised that everything will be bigger in the Big Apple: big songs, big drama, and even an “epic” Finnchel date worthy of Mr. Big. Lea Michele told EW that the dream date takes the pair through Central Park and the West Village — do I smell a horse-drawn carriage? (Ew.)  READ FULL STORY »

John C. Reilly: The leading man on National Character Actor Day

“I love that people can’t place me. They don’t know my name. That’s ‘mission accomplished’ in my world.” — John C. Reilly

Today may as well be National Character Actor Day. Reilly was born on this day in 1965, while across the pond, the Brits are celebrating the talent of Jim Broadbent, who was born May 24, 1949. They might lack the name recognition of brighter stars, but it’s their unmistakable mugs that instill an authentic Everyman quality into their eclectic collection of supporting characters. Broadbent is a legendary chameleon, slipping from Harry Potter to British period indie to Bridget Jones, and he even has an Oscar, for Iris. READ FULL STORY »

Which is the best original 'Idol' coronation song of all time? Which is the worst?

As with every American Idol finale, the last performance episode of season 10 is likely to invite plenty of corny moments: I, for one, will be rolling my eyes at Ryan’s inevitable insistence that tonight is The. Most. Important. Night. Of. Lauren. And. Scotty’s. Lives. — as well as Randy’s third-grade vocabulary level, and, well, Scotty’s rolling eyes. But perhaps the most painful moment of tonight’s telecast will be the unveiling of this season’s coronation songs, which typically run the gamut from please-turn-down-the-volume to for-the-love-of-god-shatter-my-television-with-a-baseball-bat-immediately! (And this is coming from the most hardcore of hardcore Idol fans, who still cried — covering her ears, of course — watching Kris Allen sing the Kara DioGuardi-penned “No Boundaries.”)

So before we inspect where tonight’s rumored original coronation songs for Lauren and Scotty fit in with previous seasons’ (Fox is not confirming the tunes), let’s look back at the hits and misses of Idol‘s victory songs. READ FULL STORY »

Relativity sets Snow White pic earlier than Universal's 'Snow White and the Huntsman.' Does timing matter?

Julia-Roberts_240.jpg

First, let’s break this down: Originally, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, had set its release date for December 2012. Relativity’s untitled Snow White movie, starring Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer, scheduled its bow for June 29, 2012. Then, in an attempt to beat Relativity to the box office, Universal scheduled Huntsman for June 1, 2012. And now, Relativity confirms that its pushed up its release date to March 16, 2012. Before long, this race to the theaters might just end with audiences catching a Snow White screening by the end of this week.

But will this race to the theaters actually affect which Snow White film will become the fairest of them all? READ FULL STORY »

'DWTS' finale: Should Kirstie Alley win?

dancing_with_stars_240.jpg

It all comes down to this: Tonight, the winner of Dancing With the Stars‘ 12th season is crowned. Will it be Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas, Hines Ward and Kym Johnson, or Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy? Vote in our who should win and who will win polls below. Though EW.com’s Fringe Fairy would be the first to point out that the judges seem to want either Hines or Chelsea to take home the mirrorball trophy, we all know deep down she’s rooting for Kirstie because she’s partnered with Maks (and his butt). The final three will have one more chance to impress the judges when they each perform their favorite dance from the season tonight. Roughly 38 inches of fabric have been removed from Kirstie’s Week One Cha Cha costume, which she’ll don again. (Hines chose his Samba and Chelsea her Viennese Waltz.) Watch Kirstie and Maks’ freestyle performance from Monday’s show below. Even if you didn’t love the routine, you had to respect that a couple who fell earlier this season when Maks‘ thigh gave out did these kinds of lifts in the finals. Also that at 60, Kirstie is still doing cartwheels. READ FULL STORY »

'Family Guy' vs. 'The Simpsons,' Part 2: Is 'South Park' better than both of them?

Tomorrow, EW.com will unveil our list of the 25 greatest animated series ever. We’ll be asking you, beloved readers, to decide which among those choices is the number one TV cartoon ever — a difficult task. To get you in the mood, we asked you to weigh in yesterday on one of the great never-ending conflicts in pop culture: Family Guy or The Simpsons? Some of the responses thoughtfully analyzed the variable nature of comedy: “Family Guy is more uneven,” said Greg Browning, “But when it hits, I belly laugh. Simpsons is consistently chuckle-worthy but I wouldn’t count on it for huge laughs.” Other commenters noted that Simpsons, for all its acclaim, has been in a rather long dry spell; said Glenn, “Simpsons Great Years: 2-7. That’s it, with an occasional good ep since then. Otherwise, completely unwatchable for me.” But there was one rallying cry that swept through the comment boards, starting with Stevie: “This debate is pointless, because South Park is much better than both.”

Chaos! But the Cartman loyalists may have a point. South Park has been on for almost 14 years now, with its 214th episode airing tomorrow night. (That makes the show fifty episodes older than Family Guy.) In a sense, then, South Park is just as much a Grand Old Man of Animation as The Simpsons. And if you ask me, it has also maintained its quality over a significantly longer period than The Simpsons. READ FULL STORY »

'Happy Endings' star Casey Wilson asks you to save her film, ass

Casey Wilson (Happy Endings, SNL) and June Diane Raphael (NTSF:SD:SUV) were partway through the shoot of their indie buddy-com Ass Backwards (co-starring Jon Cryer and Alicia Silverstone) when they lost funding. As you can see in their promo video (link below), this news made them both cry. A lot.

But they haven’t thrown in the towel. Instead, the ladies are turning to viral marketing, creating a Kickstarter paged called “Save Our Asses!” as a last-ditch effort to bankroll the movie. READ FULL STORY »

Let the ugly cry commence: Final 'Oprah Show' to tape today!

Oprah-Winfrey

Not since last year’s Lost finale has there been more heated speculation about how a show will end. While one can only assume things will be decidedly different (with seemingly less smoke monsters) during the final episode of The Oprah Show (“Everybody welcome Mr. Ekoooooooo!” “You get a hatch and you get a hatch!”), it’s still anyone’s guess as to how the Queen of All Media will bow out. See the emphasis on how? Sure, we’ve all guessed who will pay a visit to the big O during the very last episode of her show, but what will be the tone of the final episode?

Oprah executive producer Sheri Salata announced via her Twitter that the talk show finale would tape today (ruling out for good the live finale possibility), but she kept very mum — and understandably so — on how it was all going to come to a close. READ FULL STORY »
