'Lion King' returning to theaters in 3-D. What other classic films would you like to see in 3-D?

Back in January, Disney announced plans to release several of its titles on Blu-ray 3-D format, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. And today it was reported that a 3-D version of The Lion King — one of my top 5 movies of all time — will also be released in theaters this September. As someone who generally goes out of her way to find the 2-D version of 3-D movies in theaters, I have to say this news is quite exciting.

If there’s any movie I want brought to life in 3-D, it’s a movie as visually breathtaking as Lion King. But my second thought was: what the hell took so long?

Once 3-D started storming through theaters (whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is an entirely different debate), naturally you’d want the highest grossing hand-drawn cartoon among your first adaptations, right? Apparently not. I mean, it’s taken this long. Hopefully that speaks to the quality of the 3-D Lion King and not someone’s gross oversight. We’ll see.

Nonetheless, I’m left wondering if there are any classic movies that haven’t been made into 3-D that would make me equally — and as surprisingly — excited. My vote? American Tale. And not because I necessarily wish to see 3-D mice. I live in New York, people — I get enough rodent action. But I think the “Somewhere Out There” moon scene would be even more wrenching in 3-D. And I’d have glasses on to block the tears. Double win!

Your turn. Is there a classic movie you think might be fun to see in 3-D? Jurassic ParkFernGully? (Don’t judge my hypothetical choices. They were simply the second and third options that popped into my head.)

Michael Sheen performs dramatic reading of 'Twilight' fanfiction: Watch!

Oh, Michael Sheen. As if that shot of you gazing lovingly at your Midnight in Paris co-star Rachel McAdams as she fixed your tie on the red carpet at Cannes didn’t make us love you, you had to go and perform a dramatic reading of a piece of Twilight fanfiction on VH1′s s Big Morning Buzz Live with total commitment. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if it was me or the host sighing when he got to the part about handmaiden Isabella not knowing where to hold on to Sir Edward as they rode together on his steed. Sheen even does Isabella’s voice. Bravo, sir. Bravo. Watch the clip below. [Best Week EverREAD FULL STORY »

'SYTYCD' season 8 kicks off tonight: Are you screaming for joy like Mary?

SYTYCD

Over the past few seasons, we’ve had a strange relationship with So You Think You Can Dance. For five seasons, it was the perfect antidote to our American Idol withdrawal. It was a viable replacement for the Idol season — and even boasted better music. (Yeah, I said it!) But then, after season 5 concluded, its producers decided to switch things up, offering us a fall season. And after having just watched Jeanine Mason pick up the win, So You Think You Can Dance fans weren’t necessarily eager to watch the show stretch its legs into another season so soon.

Then, thanks to poor ratings, SYTYCD decided to revamp its premise for season 7, hiring all-stars to renew our interest in the show. The new premise worked for hardcore fans — but failed to pick up many more viewers. In fact, the season posted some of the least impressive ratings of the series’ entire run. Had the show lost its luster? Or, after two back-to-back seasons, did we simply experience SYTYCD exhaustion, making its summer premiere less anticipated?

We’ll see which is true tonight, with the return of the dance competition series. READ FULL STORY »

Oprah, if you don’t forward this blog post to 10 people in the next 10 minutes, you’re going to have bad luck for the next 10 years!

Sorry, Lady O, but you’d better be prepared for a whole lot of that as you’ve just given out your email to everyone in the free world. Winfrey, who put the kibosh on The Oprah Show for good after 25 seasons yesterday, hopped on her Facebook to announce she’d be keeping in touch all summer with her fans… and anyone with access to the Internet, for that matter.

Winfrey posted, “Oprah@oprah.com. This is going to be my personal e-mail account for all of you. When you get something in your in box from me it will be from me directly. And I’ll be reading as many of your e-mails as I can as I move to my next life on OWN. I want you to know that what you have to say matters to me.” READ FULL STORY »

Bartha (who appeared in the recent Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor) will play a brokenhearted 35-year-old seeking solitude on the Jersey shore in snowy midwinter when a “motley parade of misfits… show up and change his plans.” In line to play the misfits: True Blood’s Anna Camp, Breaking Bad’s Krysten Ritter, and Becky Shaw’s David Wilson Barnes. Previews begin Tuesday, June 28, with opening night scheduled for Monday, July 25.

'American Idol' finale: Watch and rate the performances!

With the American Idol season 10 finale in the books, all that’s left to still debate is which of the finale’s performances you liked most. Click on the links to watch them, then rate them.

Top 13 “Born This Way” Normally I hate the forced group number, but this wasn’t as painful as in years past. Everyone could dance enough to get by and their voices sounded good together. Plus, who was really listening? I was mesmerized by how the wardrobe department managed to capture all of their personalities in white.

'Family Guy' launches surprisingly somber Emmy campaign; Do they deserve to win?

Categories: Animation, Family Guy

There are so many people who hate Family Guy for so many reasons. Animation purists have never forgiven the show for copying the DNA of The Simpsons (as if The Simpsons was the first show about a fat dumb dad and his wacky family). Artsy elitists argue that Family Guy is a shallow zingbot joke factory without any South Parkian depth. I know many jilted fans who prefer the original, pre-resurrection Family Guy; they are the same horrible people who bought all those Stewie Griffin T-shirts from Hot Topic back in summer 2002. There is something fundamentally poetic about hating Family Guy, especially since Seth MacFarlane’s other shows (American Dad, The Cleveland Show, and the upcoming Flintstones reboot) have slowly conquered Fox’s Sunday night as surely as Alexander’s army slowly spread across the known world.

But it’s easy to overlook the most endearing thing about Family Guy: The show is desperate to be liked. READ FULL STORY »

Wilson Phillips on their 'Bridesmaids' comeback, their new reality show, and whether they'll sing at your wedding

Wilson-Phillips

Just when you think Bridesmaids can’t get any more delightfully funny, along comes Wilson Phillips at the climactic wedding scene to send it over the edge. Moviegoers who stick around for the end credits get an extra peek at Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph hilariously lip-syncing to the ’90s pop trio’s No. 1 smash “Hold On.” We got group members Carnie and Wendy Wilson on the phone to discuss their unexpected (yet thoroughly welcome) comeback.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you hear that the Bridesmaids filmmakers wanted you in the movie?
WENDY WILSON: Lizzie Grubman, who’s Chynna [Phillips]‘s manager and our PR girl, she organized it. And we were like, “Yes, absolutely.” It’s the first movie I was ever in. We filmed til four in the morning. It was just a blast.

Were you at all worried that you were going to be the butt of a joke?
WW: We kind of knew that we were going to be a little bit made fun of. But we were okay with that. It was all in fun. And in the end, we looked good. READ FULL STORY »

'Happy Endings' finale: The gang tries a little tenderness... and it works

Categories: About Last Night

I hope I don’t Shershow this blog post for you PopWatchers, but here goes…

Last night marked the season finale of Happy Endings, a freshman sitcom that, while still working out a few kinks (as any new series will), has some serious potential to become a primetime heavyweight like its ABC Wednesday night brethren Modern Family and Cougar Town. That was none more evident than during last night’s ep, which found the series treading into some exciting new territory… right before abandoning us all summer. Come on! READ FULL STORY »

Amy Poehler delivers 'wicked smaht' speech at Harvard Class Day

Though it’s been just one week since the finale aired, your friends at EW are already officially suffering from Parks and Recreation withdrawal. So the following video — in which P&R star Amy Poehler delivers a very funny, surprisingly touching speech to Harvard’s graduating class — hit the internet just in time. As a bonus, Poehler’s address is almost 15 minutes long, which makes it just seven minutes shorter than the average episode of Parks and Rec. (Yes, we are obsessed enough to know these things.)

The speech itself is smart and frequently quoteworthy, if not quite as LOL-inducing as some of Poehler’s best work (“The Fight” FTW!). In it, the lady behind Leslie Knope talks a little about her own background — she went to Boston College, “which some call the Harvard of Boston” — and gives the graduates advice both as a Bostonian (“Just because you’re wicked smaht doesn’t mean you’re better than me”) and as a New Yorker (“Excuse me, m’am, could you move, please?”) before revealing that the true secret to happiness is living your life by the rules of improv comedy.
