New Line Cinema has confirmed that Malin Akerman has joined the cast of Rock of Ages, playing Constance Stack, a journalist who romances Tom Cruise’s Stacee Jaxx. But that’s not the only project the actress has on her plate. No, Rock of Ages brings Akerman to… six films headed to theaters in 2012: The Giant Mechanical Man, Medallion, Wildwood Inn, Serpent Girl, The Numbers Station, and, now Ages. As for 2011, Akerman appears in happythankyoumorepleaseElectra Luxx, The Bang Bang Club, Criminal Empire for Dummy’s, Wanderlust, and Inferno, the Linda Lovelace biopic that unceremoniously dumped Lindsay Lohan for the role before Akerman took it over. Phew. Move over, James Franco — Hollywood’s got a new busiest actor!

But this is not the first year Akerman has been roped into a good number of projects. READ FULL STORY »

Why 'SNL' cast-off Casey Wilson is getting the last laugh on 'Happy Endings'

Casey-Wilson

To say that Casey Wilson didn’t get much time to shine on Saturday Night Live would be something of an understatement, as she — and Michaela “Biiiitch Pleeeeaze” Watkins — got the boot in 2009, after just two seasons. While Wilson’s characters weren’t exactly standouts (Dusty Velvet definitely wasn’t getting her own Christmas special anytime soon), she still had a good comedic presence on-screen and her impressions, particularly the one of Rachael Ray, should have kept her on much longer.

Alas, the funny lady is getting her happy ending in primetime, no less on a show called Happy Endings. Yes, it’s a 20-and-30-somethings exploring the complexities of love and life sitcom (which has been done to death), but as far as new shows go, this one deserves to go well past the one-year mark. [The Wednesday night ABC comedy is currently averaging about 5 million viewers, earning it "Strong Odds" of renewal from EW's Lynette Rice and James Hibberd.] READ FULL STORY »

Liking Blake Shelton on 'The Voice'? Bet you'll like him even more after reading this!

Blake-Shelton

Who’s the breakout star of The Voice? Right now, we’d have to say coach Blake Shelton, whose sense of humor, sensitivity (catch those smiles when contestants sang songs by his fiancée, Miranda Lambert?), and toughness (he still didn’t pick either of ‘em!) is winning him fans who have no idea his hair used to look like this.

Go ahead, embrace him. PopWatch has been a fan since he nailed the EW Pop Culture Personality Test back in 2008. Below, we revisit that entertaining conversation and stand by what we concluded then — there’s nothing sexier than a straight man expressing love for The Golden GirlsREAD FULL STORY »

What should the 'American Idol' Top 5 sing for Now & Then night? What should they avoid?

The American Idol Top 5 are singing two songs tonight, culled from the completely clear and specific theme of ”Now & Then,” with “Now” being music from, um, “now,” and “Then” being music from the 1960s. I do not envy the contestants their task in choosing songs from such a wide-open field of possibilities, especially now that they pretty much need to pull out a show-stopper every time in their ever-narrowing march to the Nokia Theatre. And speaking of “now,” now is the time for contestants like Lauren to blow us out of the water, and contestants like James to continue his momentum by making surprising choices. Fortunately, we’ve made suggestions for the contestants (that they will in no way be able to take since it’s the day of the show, but let’s just keep up the pretense that we’re helping them out anyhow), both for the songs they should snag and the ones they should avoid at all costs. Check them out below: READ FULL STORY »

Rider Strong thinks Corey and Topanga married too young. Guess the fate of other '90s sitcom couples!

Boy-Meets-World

Ahh, Corey and Topanga. The TGIF generation’s Tracy and Hepburn. True love in its finest form.

Except, like most awesome things from the ’90s (slap bracelets, financial security), it seems the happy couple may not have made it to the new millennium. At least, not according to Rider Strong. In a funny, and surprisingly insightful interview with Vanity Fair, Strong, who played Corey’s (Ben Savage) best friend Shawn, shared his thoughts on all things Boy Meets World, from the unexplained disappearance of Mr. Turner (seriously, what?) to whether or not his TV pal and Topanga (Danielle Fishel) lasted.

When asked if he thought Corey and Topanga, who wed in the final season, would be divorced by now, Strong sadly answered, “Probably.” READ FULL STORY »

'The Host's Leaderboard': Tom Bergeron on his new haircut, throwing to Diane Sawyer, and Mark Ballas' 'misconstrued' Monday night hand gesture

My Week 7 chat with Dancing With the Stars host Tom Bergeron is chock full o’ gems:

  • On his hair: “I don’t mind if it’s graying, as long as it’s staying.”
  • Tom and the DWTS production staff have nothing better to do than stand around and talk about the brilliance of EW.com’s Hidden Gems. How awful!
  • When throwing to Diane Sawyer — with whom he has a strictly flirtatious professional relationship thanks to a Good Morning America stint — Tom had to make a conscious effort to tone down the jauntiness and “maintain a certain level of ballroom gravitas.”
  • Tom believes Mark Ballas’s explanation of Monday’s “wanker” hand gesture: It was intended for his dad, Corky, as a “You gotta roll the dice with the choreography” inside joke. But as Tom counseled Mark after the show, “If that was a gesture of self-gratification, you’re really bragging about your size, because that was WAY off to the side.”

Press the “play” triangle to hear my imaginary friend in all his alternate-universe glory!

Jesse James on 'Good Morning America': 'I can't worry about Sandra Bullock anymore.'

Promoting his new book, American Outlaw, Sandra Bullock’s ex-husband Jesse James was on Good Morning America this morning, in clips from a taped interview with Vicki Mabrey that will air tonight on Nightline. Though he’s hard on himself, he also admits that “I can’t worry about [Bullock] anymore. I think I’ve spent a good chunk of the last five or six years worrying only about her and what she thinks and what I should do and, like, you know, controlling all my movements and everything else. I think it’s time to worry about Jesse and making sure Jesse’s happy.”

James was crucified publicly for cheating on his famous wife, right after she’d won the Oscar for The Blind Side, so it will be interesting to see how people will react to his now saying that his devotion to his ex “controlled [his] movements and everything else” while he was simultaneously undermining their marriage. Kelly Preston to play John Travolta's wife in 'Gotti.' Do you enjoy watching real-life couples on screen?

Kelly-Preston

Looks like Fiore Films is keeping Gotti: Three Generations all in the family: A rep for the film confirmed People‘s report that Kelly Preston is joining the film, set to play Victoria Gotti. This, of course, means Preston will be playing wife to John Gotti Sr., who just happens to be played by Preston’s real-life husband, John Travolta. (The couple’s 11-year-old daughter will appear in the film as well, playing the mafia couple’s daughter, Angel Gotti.) So, with the exception of Lindsay Lohan — who is on board playing Kim Gotti — it looks like the film is, quite appropriately, becoming a family affair. But my question is: How much do we actually enjoy watching real-life couples on the big screen? READ FULL STORY »

Lifetime launches eight-episode 'Project Runway All Stars.' Who should join the cast?

Austin-Scarlett

First, The CW announces an all-star version of America’s Next Top Model. And now, Lifetime tells us that we’ll see some of our favorite reality stars back on an all-star edition of Project Runway?! Is 2011 just a year-long Christmas?! Because this is quite a gift to us pop-culture junkies: In addition to a ninth season of the Emmy-nominated fashion competition, the network will air Project Runway All Stars, eight one-hour episodes featuring previous contestants. This makes it slightly different than the two-hour Project Runway: All-Stars Challenge, which saw the return of players Jeffrey Sebelia, Santino Rice, Daniel Vosovic, Uli Herzner, Mychael Knight, Chris March, Sweet P, and Korto Momolu. (Vosovic won that round.)

So now, the inevitable question is: Who should return? Excepting the contestants who already participated in All-Stars Challenge — and previous Project Runway winners (I like a fair fight) — here’s my wish list. Without further ado, I’ll carry on, Tim Gunn: READ FULL STORY »

Maxim's Hot 100 full of mysteries

rosie-huntington-whiteley_240.jpg

Maxim has released its annual list of the world’s 100 hottest women. This year, Victoria’s Secret model/Transformers: Dark of the Moon star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley comes in at No. 1. Sure. Why not? It’s a timely pick. Just like Kate Middleton is at No. 26. A few points worth discussing though:

• Jennifer Lopez, People‘s most beautiful woman, doesn’t even make the list. And this list includes Jersey Shore‘s JWoww at No. 78. Do you agree with Maxim — there is a difference between beautiful and sexy, and this is the best example ever? Or do you think this is ageism? (Exhibit B, your honor: Sofia Vergara is only No. 29. Rebuttal: Cameron Diaz somehow ended up at No. 4, right after Katy Perry and right before Mila Kunis.) READ FULL STORY »
