Betty White’s new memoir, If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won’t), hit shelves Tuesday. And considering the 89-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down, it wasn’t a surprise that she stopped by The Times Center last night for the TimesTalk event “A Conversation with Betty White.” The seven-time Emmy award-winning actress, interviewed by Frank Bruni, talked about her career, her new book, and shared several stories that kept the audience laughing. White summed up her seven-decade career simply, “I’m the luckiest old broad on two feet.” Here are a few highlights from last night’s chat:

'Chariots of Fire' is better than 'Raging Bull'? Puh-leeze!

Chariots-of-Fire

I don’t usually put much stock in the opinions of writers who use words like “hurly-burly” and “codswallop.” But some clueless declarations just beg to be disputed. Yesterday, an article about sports movies by Frank Keating in Britain’s The Guardian newspaper had the nerve not just to take several bone-headed swipes at Martin Scorsese’ 1980 boxing masterpiece Raging Bull, but the writer also went on to declare that Chariots of Fire is the greatest sports movie ever made. To borrow one of Keating’s stuffy phrases, Codswallop! Or to translate it to Americanese: Dude, you’re high!

First of all, Chariots of Fire is an absurd pick. READ FULL STORY »

Who will be Oprah's final guest? Who would you like it to be?

OPRAH

It’s the question every fan of The Oprah Show is asking: Can I get a free new car? No, sorry, that’s just me. No, what we’re all wondering is: Who will be the final guest on Oprah’s final episode?

Don’t expect an answer here — Harpo is as quiet as a mouse when it comes to the identity of Oprah’s final guest. It’s a very, very well-kept secret, one that has bloggers and fans considering all angles. READ FULL STORY »

'The Colbert Report': On a bathroom quest, Stephen encounters David Letterman and Katie Couric

Last night, Stephen Colbert let us in on a little secret: Everyone who works at Viacom — the company behind networks including Comedy Central and CBS — has to share a single bathroom, which is located on the set of The Colbert Report. (The arrangement’s particularly tough on Craig Ferguson, Stephen told us — “He has to fly in from L.A.”) They also share a single bathroom key. Naturally, when someone wants to pay a visit to the porcelain throne, things can get a little complicated. Watch the clip below to see Stephen make a surprise appearance on the set of The Late Show, then get caught unaware by a certain newswoman once he finally makes it past the bathroom door. What's the judges' beef with 'Idol' contestant Haley?

It certainly seems like the producers are behind Haley Reinhart — the American Idol contestant has been given the pimp slot two times during the course of the finals. And the fans are behind her — the dark horse of season 10 has been awarded rallying cries of support online from fans of the singing reality show. Yet, the judges still can’t seem to get in Haley’s corner, regardless of her awe-inspiring vocals and interesting risks. So what’s the deal? What’s the judges’ beef with Haley?

Granted, I’m a bit biased. Always a fan of the underdog during Idol seasons past (Jason Castro, Constantine Maroulis, Kris Allen and Clay Aiken… yes, the last two were once underdogs during their respective seasons), I can’t help but be in Haley’s corner. READ FULL STORY »

The Emmys has a producer. Now, who should host?

As we learned yesterday, the Emmys has its producer, Mark Burnett. It has its network, Fox. But it still is missing one major piece of the awards ceremony puzzle: The host. Last year, Jimmy Fallon proved to be a surprisingly adept emcee, delivering one of the best opening numbers in recent awards show history with his “Born to Run” sketch (or perhaps Anne Hathaway and James Franco’s turns as Oscar hosts have just clouded my judgment). And in 2009, Neil Patrick Harris sweetened the bad taste left in our mouths by 2008 hosts Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst, and Ryan Seacrest. So who should it be this year? Who should host the 2011 Emmys?

Considering their respectable turns, I wouldn’t mind if either Harris or Fallon made triumphant returns to the Emmys stage. READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: Johnny Depp helps chart a new course for 'Pirates of the Caribbean'

Jack Sparrow doesn’t usually feel regret, though he does at times feel lost. Fans of the devil-may-care seafarer may know what it’s like to be there with him.

In this week’s cover story, EW looks at how the fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean mega-franchise, On Stranger Tides (out May 20), attempts to reverse course from the previous two installments and return to the stand-alone spirit of the original. “I felt if we were going to do a 4, that more than anything we owed the audience a fresh start, without all the complicated mathematics of 1 colliding with 2 and 2 colliding with 3,” Depp says. “I felt like it was important to eliminate as many complications as possible.”

The Pirates series has earned $2.6 billion in worldwide box office alone (not counting home video, theme park and merchandising bonanzas), and Depp himself pocketed between $32 million and $35 million, according to estimates, for agreeing to a fourth. For the fans who have stuck with the franchise all this time, he says he wanted this one to be a better movie.  READ FULL STORY »

Jeff Probst on episode 12 of 'Survivor: Redemption Island'

Each week, Survivor host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Redemption Island.

So after winning the Redemption Island duel, Mike had a choice to spend time with his mom, let his two Redemption Island buddies hang with their loved ones, or let the six people who voted him out be reunited with their family members. Do you believe him when he says that he chose the Ometepe six strictly as a gesture of Christian kindness so that the most people could have that treat, or was there more strategy involved than Mike is letting on? What’s your take?
So hard to be inside someone’s mind but if I had to guess I’d say it was a bit of both. I believe Mike is a good person with a strong faith. He quoted the bible without hesitation. But I also believe he wants to win the money. He made a great move by choosing the Ometepe six because if he gets to the end he has a lot of good will coming back his way and to give any help to his two competitors on RI would be silly as it might lift them up. 'American Idol' on the scene for Top 5 performance night: The details on Jennifer Lopez's hot-hot-hot (and hidden) heels!

American-Idol-top-5

The top of tonight’s American Idol telecast was slightly altered from the way the show usually opens: The three judges were already sitting when Ryan introduced them, whereas Idol‘s announcer usually gives the trio a proper introduction as they walk out from behind the big screen on the stage. Did you notice that change at all? Maybe it mattered none to you all out there who were watching on TV, but as someone who was in the Idoldome, I will tell you for sure that you missed a glimpse of something very important because of the seemingly harmless alteration: J.Lo’s smokin’ hot, diamond-encrusted heels. (See: Even the photo here doesn’t show it!)
