'South Park' spoofs the Royal Wedding -- Canada-style!

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

There was no doubt aboot it: South Park was going to have to skewer the Royal Wedding. While the mass hysteria surrounding the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton has died down substantially, it doesn’t mean Trey Parker and Matt Stone still won’t poke fun at it. And poke fun they will — Comedy Central just offered up a teaser of Wednesday night’s new episode, titled “Royal Pudding.” Rest easy, Will and Kate fans, the newlyweds aren’t exactly ridiculed. Rather, the Candian versions of them will be!

In the episode, just as the Canadian royalty (heh) are getting ready to walk down the aisle, the “aboot to be Princess of Canada” gets kidnapped, causing panic throughout America’s cap. READ FULL STORY »

'Something Borrowed' dilemma elicited more than laughs at my showing. How vocal was your crowd?

Something-Borrowed

On PopWatch, we often talk about crowd participation at the movies — when we like it, when we don’t. I don’t recall any of those conversations ever involving a romantic comedy. That’s because usually you just get the laughter. We all go in assuming we’ll get a happy ending, so we don’t let the requisite moments of heartbreak along the way affect us enough to elicit else. Why get worked up?  READ FULL STORY »

'Idol' vs. 'The Voice' vs. 'X Factor' vs. 'Sing-Off': Which singing show has the best judges' panel?

Sure, it’s exciting to watch new talent emerge from the bevy of singing competitions. After all, we could be watching the next Carrie Underwood or Leona Lewis or Taylor Hicks (wait…) rise to fame right before our very eyes. But, let’s face it, a good number of us tune in is to watch the judges on said shows say crazy things, wear shiny clothes, and bicker with one another. When it was announced yesterday that Paula Abdul would be joining her old friend/foe/flirt Simon Cowell at the judges’ table (alongside L.A. Reid and Cheryl Cole) for X Factor, it was official: The Voice and Idol had some real competition.

While Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine have all but made The Voice a runaway hit, can it compare to the nuttery that is the Paula and Simon dynamic? READ FULL STORY »

Michael Bolton returns to 'SNL' after 20 years: Best thing he did in between appearances?

Michael Bolton made his triumphant return to Saturday Night Live over the weekend guesting in a digital short with The Lonely Island in which his obsession with the Pirates of the Caribbean films heavily influenced the hook he wrote for Andy Samberg’s trio. Watch the video below. It’s the first time Bolton’s been on SNL since he was the musical guest in 1991 and took part in the memorable “We Are the World” spoof “Musicians for Free Range Chickens.” We’ve embedded that below as well. (If it gets taken down, here’s the transcript.)

What’s the best thing Bolton did in between appearances? Obviously, the correct response is cut his hair in 1997. READ FULL STORY »

Chris Hemsworth's tight samba trousers make EW.com's Fringe Fairy consider seeing 'Thor'

Thanks to EW.com reader Maddie, who asked me on Twitter: “Did you know that Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth rocked the samba on the Aussie version of DWTS in pants that’d make Maks proud?”

Well thank the Lord Mirrorballus in disco heaven, I do now! Video after the break. READ FULL STORY »

Marg Helgenberger calls Justin Bieber 'kind of a brat'

Filed under: News, TV and tagged: ,

Justin Bieber gilded his resume this year with a why-the-heck-not guest arc on CSI, which culminated in a bloody bullet ballet that was like Bonnie & Clyde except with better hair. At least one CSI cast member wasn’t too impressed by the tweenybopping idol, though; when Marg Helgenberger was speaking to French radio last week, she said, “I shouldn’t be saying this, but he was kind of a brat.” Wearing an impish grin that positively screamed I would never say this on American radio, Helgenberger noted that the star was perfectly nice to her but, “He locked one of the producers in a closet…[and] he put his fist through a cake that was on a craft services table.”

Kids these days, with their closet pranks and pastry-punching! What’s happening to America? Let’s have a serious discussion about it on French radio. UPDATE: Bieber has apparently responded to Helgenger’s comments via his Twitter page, saying “it’s kinda lame when someone you met briefly and never worked with comments on you. I will continue to wish them luck and be kind.” He later added, “I know who i am and sometimes people r just going 2 say what they want. Keep ur head up and be the man ur mama raised. #killemwithkindness,” before ultimately concluding, “dont spread gossip and dont spread rumors about others…im a kid and i know that. #respect.” In conclusion, Hollywood is exactly like fifth grade, except apparently with more cake. Simon Cowell reunites with his wind-up toy Paula Abdul for 'X Factor' auditions

And for a moment, the world is as it should be: Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul are together again now that auditions for Fox’s X Factor have begun. EW’s Dave Karger was on the scene of the first taping Sunday, and in addition to describing how the audience protested one contestant’s dismissal with a “Bring her back!” chant until producers did, he also notes that during one break, Simon “lovingly petted” Paula’s hair. Ah. Speaking to Cowell before the taping, HollywoodJunket.com found out Abdul owes her reunion with Cowell to the media. It was while chatting with the press that Cowell realized, “Overwhelmingly, they wanted her on the show.” The reason he and Abdul get along so well is simple, according to Cowell: “When I’m bored, Paula’s like one of those toys, you know, you just wind up, and then I’ll just throw it on the floor for a minute and just play with it, and then I’m happy.” Watch the interview below.  READ FULL STORY »

Summer Movie Body Count Update: 'Thor' decimates the Frost Giant population

Week one for EW’s 2011 Summer Movie Body Count begins with Marvel Studios’ Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Anthony Hopkins. Click here for a reminder of our highly scientific guidelines for what counts as a death, and how we’re counting them. And since we’re going to be talking about deaths here, the requisite spoiler alert should almost go without saying, but we’ll say it anyhow: SPOILER ALERT!

Frost Giants are not, we can all agree, a very agreeable species. They are tall, blue, and ugly. They appear to have no hobbies besides fighting and refrigeration. Possibly because they live on a world that resembles a less tourist-friendly version of Hoth, they spend their bleak sunless days sneering and plotting the conquest of other realms. Thor, the first official film of the summer blockbuster season, begins with a Frost Giant sneak attack on a kindly Viking village. Eight villagers, including women and children, were flash-frozen before our eyes. READ FULL STORY »

'Kids React' to Osama bin Laden's death: Watch

The weekly ‘Kids React’ web series posted a special episode Sunday with children ages 6 to 14 reacting to President Obama delivering the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed. Questions begin with simply identifying bin Laden (8-year-old Emma knows he took down the Twin Towers and that a lot of people died that day, “like 42 people died”). Then the kids are asked if there was anything we could have done but killed him (10-year-old twins Megan and Shannon, pictured, have differing opinions with Megan thinking you don’t just walk up to someone and shoot, and Shannon reasoning, “They didn’t — they tried handling it with words and it didn’t work”). Things get truly fascinating when the kids explain why it was — or wasn’t — right to celebrate in the streets (I’m with 10-year-old William, who says, “I was happy that our nation felt pride. That’s good. But I’m not cheering ’cause this is still a man’s life. It’s a bad man’s life, but it’s still a life”) and why we should — or shouldn’t — release a photo of bin Laden’s body to prove he’s dead (“Oh, you better soon,” says 6-year-old Morgan). The kids finish by detailing what they think will happen now with other terrorists and what they would do if they were president to stop terrorism. Nine-year-old Elle would buy a yellow canoe — I think she missed the second part of the question; Morgan would give a comforting speech. “God bless everyone that we are not dead. God bless. God bless. God bless. But everyone that died, might I say, it is sad,” she says, pouting. William, who likens the war on terror to a game of Whac-A-Mole — another bad guy will always pop up — isn’t sure: “This is really, really a hard subject, ’cause it’s like politics, CNN, terrorists. I don’t know. I don’t know.”
