'Becoming Chaz': Did you watch the powerful documentary?

Oprah Winfrey’s OWN aired the powerful documentary Becoming Chaz tonight, which focused on Chaz Bono, born Chastity to Cher and Sonny Bono, and his struggle to transition from female to male. It was a personal and, at times, difficult film to watch (I’m a little squeamish when it comes to surgical stuff). The cameras did not shy away from showing the various surgeries that Chaz endured or the difficult recovery process. Nor did they ignore the stress Chaz’s transition placed upon him and his girlfriend. The one thing I did find odd was Cher’s lack of presence aside from a taped interview and a brief moment between the pair at the premiere of Burlesque. READ FULL STORY »

'Dancing With the Stars': Hidden Gems of Week 8!

Gems: Not just the name of a Michael Bolton album! Studies have shown that Hidden Gems of the Week, EW.com’s collection of reader-submitted ridiculata, is the best way to enjoy Dancing With the Stars without ever having to turn it on. It’s a visual feast of sparkles, fringe, and Maks’ ass. Double dose of jewels this week — next week, I’ll be on a trip to outer space (Planet Mirrorballus itself) and might not get to spend five hours heavily petting my screengrabber.

Sure, they may not all be *hidden,* but as EW.com’s Senior Supervising Appraiser, I can happily confirm they’re all priceless. Ready to go down the rabbit hole? Behold this bountiful smattering of Visible Gems!

MOST VALUABLE GEM (MVG) OF THE WEEK: IN IT TO SPRINT IT EDITION

Yes, Hilary Swank is pretty. But why do we care?

It’s the question that has long been dissected and cemented in pop culture, thanks to a memorable episode of The Office surrounding the topic: Is Hilary Swank attractive? Well it looks like the subject is about to be resurrected once again. During an interview with Swank on Los Angeles public radio station KCRW, Kim Masters spoke with the actress about other, older actresses’ struggles finding work in the industry, to which Swank responded, “I’m still young enough that I haven’t been feeling the brunt of that. Certainly, you hear about it … and you do see it, although you also see a lot more roles I think opening up for older women. I mean, Meryl Streep seems to be dominating.” Responded Masters: “Oh, but she’s… the exception… She’s not a pretty girl, and you’re not either.”  READ FULL STORY »

If you’re like me and managed to avoid the Extragate spoilers, it’s still an exciting race for prom queen! Will McKinley get Zized? Or will perfect-nosed Quinn fulfill her royal destiny? Is there any way Santana and Karofsky’s scheme will work out? In my dreams, Rachel will win in a ballot-stuffing prank and go Carrie on everyone after a bucket of Slushee rains down on her. But it looks like she’ll have a fun, fun, fun, fun night after all. If no one asks you to prom, what do you do? READ FULL STORY »

Andy Samberg will swim with sharks for Shark Week, probably not wearing this

Details for the 24th annual Shark Week — kicking off July 31 — are emerging. Today, Discovery announced that this year’s “Chief Shark Officer” Andy Samberg will host his own special with the working title Shark City. Per the network, ”Samberg travels to the Bahamas and takes the plunge — literally jumping into the shark-filled waters to introduce viewers to a specific group of sharks that live off the shores of Nassau. They each have their own distinct personalities, quirks and feeding patterns. Learn how they size each other up, what they like to eat and what scares THEM.” That’s all the info I have, but if this is something like Shark Week regular Stuart Cove introducing Samberg to individual Caribbean reef sharks and revealing what he’s come to know about them over the years he’s led his underwater adventures, that could be totally fun. If you’re going to swim with relatively non-threatening sharks like that, you’ve got to give us something different, and finding out that this shark responds more to women in bikinis and has therefore earned whatever nickname is acceptable.  READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber kisses Selena Gomez. Where does this rank amongst pop culture's most awkward smooches?

Justin Bieber’s caught-on-camera kiss with girlfriend Selena Gomez is awkward for two reasons: 1) The way Gomez goes in for a second peck, and catches Bieber’s cheek instead, and 2) I really feel as though I shouldn’t be analyzing the way two teenagers smooch — especially in slow motion. And yet, here I am doing just that anyway! Oh, blogging.

But where does this rank amongst pop culture’s most awkward kisses? READ FULL STORY »

'Blue Valentine' hits DVD: Here's a movie worth getting bummed out for! What other flicks do you willingly cry over?

Blue-Valentine

It’s spring, PopWatchers! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, those dreary winter days are far behind! But despite all those wondrous things, I still have every intention of picking up a copy of Blue Valentine, drawing the shades (blasted sun causes a glare!) and crying my eyes out as I watch one of the most heart-wrenching movies of 2010. Scratch that: Ever.

For me, Blue Valentine ranked right behind The Social Network as the best film of 2010, thanks to the staggeringly great performances from Ryan Gosling (his Oscar nom snub? Unforgivable!) and Michelle Williams, who play a couple who fall apart as the years go by. Still, the movie completely deflated me. As Oprah would say, it gave me the ugly cry.  READ FULL STORY »

'American Reunion' gets Thomas Ian Nicholas on board. What other classic '90s teen ensembles do you want to see get back together?

It’s happening American Pie fans: the whole gang will be back for the reunion! Universal confirms to EW that Thomas Ian Nicholas, who played pal Kevin Myers, is officially on board for American Reunion, the flick that will get the entire American Pie gang back together once again. Nichols will join Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Chris Klein, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Eugene Levy for the fourth installment. No word yet on the “Sherminator’s” attendance.

While I’m quite excited that the original American Pie crew is getting back together for — terrible pun alert! — another serving, we know what the gang from East Great Falls have been up to, thanks to their subsequent sequel and Wedding. But what characters in other ’90s high school flicks? There are some other movie reunions that need to happen. Namely, Can’t Hardly Wait. READ FULL STORY »

Spencer Pratt is least popular celeb in his marriage, world

Congratulations, Spencer Pratt. Heidi Montag’s lesser half — that’s not intended sarcasm — is the most disliked celebrity around, according to E-Poll market research that measures celebrity value and helps companies select effective spokespeople. (Wait, is this 2010?) You may have already suspected this, but E-Poll has the numbers to prove it. Just how unlikable does one have to be to be the most disliked? Well, you have to beat Suspected Wife Killer and Convicted Kidnapper O.J. Simpson to take the crown. You have to edge Octomom, two Hiltons (Paris and Perez), and two Gosselins. Montag herself ranked No. 6 on the list, so there’s bragging rights at stake, though it’s unclear who won them in this case. READ FULL STORY »
