'American Idol': Randy tears into Haley, and Rupert Murdoch is there to see it, on the scene of Top 4 performance night

I’m going to have to start off this American Idol on the scene recap with a small apology. It wasn’t until the final ad break of the night that I realized that the most powerful man at the Fox television network — nay, one of the most powerful men in the world – was seated just a few rows in front of my quasi-opera box seat inside the Idoldome. As some eagle-eyed home viewers can attest, Rupert Murdoch himself — chairman and CEO of News Corporation, Fox’s pappy/corporate owner — was seated with what appeared to be a small gaggle of the extended Murdoch family, a rare sighting indeed for even the most season Idoldome veteran. So rare, in fact, I didn’t even consider that the bald, bespectacled, well-dressed older gentleman was the man who could quite literally shut off the lights with just a flick of his Blackberry, so I won’t really be able to give you a fun blow-by-blow of how Rupert Murdoch takes in an episode of his most popular and lucrative cash cow. In my defense, I really only saw the back of his head until that aforementioned final ad break, when Fox TV head Peter Rice stepped out into the Idoldome and up to Murdoch’s row to pay his respects. (I’ve been meaning to bone up on my back-of-media-moguls’-heads flashcards for months now, but they just keep gathering dust on my credenza next to my tech mogul yacht 2007 calendar.)

But the moment I did realize Murdoch was in the house, the preceding events of the evening took on an entirely different flavor for me. READ FULL STORY »

'Cougar Town': Love is a battlefield

In last night’s episode of “We Pretend… Cougar Town…Is Called Wine Time,” I was surprised by the lack of grape being pounded by our favorite cul-de-sac crew. I think a little time with Big Carl (RIP Joe) and even Little Richard would have done the group some good and maybe even helped with their familial problems.  READ FULL STORY »

'South Park' spoofing Royal Wedding tonight. What other current events should it parody?

So far, during this 15th season of South Park, the animated comedy has done its job: It’s been disgusting (thanks for contributing to my diet, HUMANCENTiPAD), relevant (a Osama bin Laden death reference three days after the announcement? Nicely done), and, most importantly, pretty freakin’ funny. And, tonight, I’m expecting no different: As we showed you earlier this week with a teaser clip, Matt Stone and Trey Parker are set to parody the Royal Wedding in “Royal Pudding,” which, at least in part, follows the nuptials of Canadian versions of Prince William and Kate Middleton. (See the teaser clip again after the jump.)

Now, I’m not a wedding fanatic, but, still, is it wrong that I’m anticipating this episode more than I anticipated the Royal Wedding? Either way, I’m digging Stone and Parker’s quick turnaround this season. So I ask you, PopWatchers: What other very current current events are you hoping South Park parodies this season? David Hasselhoff joins 'Piranha 3DD.' I cannot wait to (Bay)watch this movie.

Imagine a future Celebrity Apprentice cast. Now, imagine them all getting devoured by man-eating fish, and you’ve got Piranha 3DD, the follow-up to 2010′s blood-and-boobs fest Piranha 3D. Just look at the actors involved: Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Gary Busey, Katrina Bowden, and now, David Hasselhoff. Yep, that’s right: The Weinstein Co. announced Wednesday that the America’s Got Talent judge and hamburger aficionado is set to join the sequel.

But here’s where I enter a plea to The Weinstein Co. I want just one thing for the holidays this year (the film is headed to theaters in November 2011): Please, oh please, let Hasselhoff play Mitch Buchannon. READ FULL STORY »

Donald Trump reveals his hair-care regimen: Lather, rinse, do not repeat

Looks like Mean Girls‘ Gretchen Weiners isn’t the only one whose hair is full of secrets.

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Donald Trump finally explained how he gets his fine golden mane to look like that. While I could just as easily write jokes about Trump’s laughably non-Presidential coif, the comedy really writes itself here. Just read the excerpt from RS below in which you can absolutely hear Trump saying these things in his very Trump-like way. Or better yet, imagine Conan O’Brien saying it as Donald Trump. But, most importantly, never under any circumstances, should you follow this hair regimen, as it involves an hour of drying and watching Morning Joe. Also, it would make you look like Donald Trump:  READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga will stream songs from 'Born This Way' on 'FarmVille'

The 46 million people who play FarmVille every month are getting an eccentric new neighbor. This morning, social gaming company Zynga announced a partnership with Lady Gaga, which will allow users to stream songs from Gaga’s forthcoming Born This Way before the album is released on May 23. Players will visit a neighboring farm, “GagaVille,” where they can undertake lightweight tasks to unlock tracks from Born This Way. It’s not the first time that a musician has partnered with a gaming company — Guns n’ Roses released “Shackler’s Revenge” on Rock Band 2, and Zynga worked with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on partnerships through their popular Mafia Wars game — but given the near-messianic cult of Gaga and the massive FarmVille user population, it’s certainly a noteworthy moment in the evolution of pop music branding. Rachel Weisz eyes new 'Bourne' film, but what is a Bourne Girl?

Hear the term Bond Girl and an immediate image comes to mind: a glamorous and curvy beauty with an appreciation for double entendres. But a Bourne Girl is something entirely different. In fact, it’s not exactly clear yet what a Bourne Girl is. In the original Bourne Identity with Matt Damon, Franka Potente played the punkish girl who got pulled into Bourne’s wormhole of amnesia and assassins. She wasn’t long for his world, of course, and the only other major female characters have been American versions of Bond’s M: Joan Allen’s skeptical CIA agent and Julia Stiles’ sympathetic Agency technician (and possible pre-amnesia romantic interest). So what is a Bourne Girl? Clone Dr. Lilith Sternin Crane and you’re in the ballpark. READ FULL STORY »

Judgment Day is now 11 days away, ruining our pop-culture plans

The end, or so we’ve been told by a spirited fellow in Times Square, is apparently very much nigh. In fact, Judgment Day is scheduled for May 21, 2011. So unless our calculations our way off, that means we’ve only got 11 days until the Rapture. Aw, maaaaan.

This is a bummer for a number of reasons, besides the whole you and everyone you know and the whole world going out in a blaze of fire and brimstone. Not only will this have made the John Cusack, everything-goes-boom flick 2012 totally pointless and silly (see photo: Not at all implausible scenario of what could have happened a year from now!) but it completely screws up other things on our pop culture agenda.  READ FULL STORY »

What should the 'American Idol' Top 4 sing for Leiber & Stoller night? What should they avoid?

It’s pretty much impossible to have lived in this country at any point in the last 60 years and not have heard a song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, even if you didn’t realize it. Along with tattooed-in-your-brain standards like “Stand By Me,” “Love Potion No. 9,” and “On Broadway,” many of Elvis Presley’s most memorable mega-hits were written by the duo, including “Jailhouse Rock” and “Hound Dog.” But here is the tricky thing for the American Idol Top 4 tonight as they tackle the Leiber and Stoller songbook: Many of their songs sound very much of their time (a kind way of calling the music dated), and yet lyrically they remain remarkably bold. Take their hit “Dance With Me,” which has the singer imploring his (or her) dancing partner to get “closer and closer,” and “tighter and tighter” so that “maybe we’ll be lovers/ When the music ends.” Yeah, don’t so much see Lauren or Scotty taking on that song, do you? Then again, with Lady Gaga stepping in as the guest mentor, anything is possible.

Fortunately, we’ve singled out the Leiber & Stoller songs that could best help each of the Top 4 make it to the Top 3 (presuming they’ll sing two songs each to fill the 90 minute episode), and which songs they should avoid at all costs. Check our our picks below, and then let us know what songs you think they should take on tonight. READ FULL STORY »
