'Jersey Shore' in Italy: Local Florentines react to the GTL invasion of their city

Fare casino.” It’s an idiomatic Italian phrase that doesn’t have a straight English translation; it literally means “to make a brothel,” but could be translated as “uncontrolled confusion” or “to make a mess of things.” Or it really could just mean “party hard.” Do all these phrases remind you of anything?

As MTV’s Jersey Shore makes its long-anticipated, slightly delayed, reportedly controversial arrival in Florence, Italy, it shouldn’t be surprising that almost every Florentine local we interviewed for this story used the expression fare casino when describing their worries about the U.S. reality hit. “The general feeling towards Jersey Shore being in Florence is excitement that they’re shooting here, but also a bit of unease,” says Dasha Savage, an American college student studying abroad who served as my eyes and ears (and translator) in Florence. “I heard many older Italians express opinions of disgust for having these people come to their city.”

To get a sense of what the target MTV demographic thinks of the Jersey Shore‘s Italian invasion, we took to Palazzo Giovane, a hangout spot for young Florentine schoolkids. There the local students expressed a mixture of disgust and anticipation.  READ FULL STORY »

'Castle': Most devastating season finale ever?

Castle-Fillon

Inconsolable. That was pretty much my state yesterday after watching the Castle season finale.

The hour was everything that we love about the show [SPOILER ALERT!]: action (imprisoned Lockwood escaped the court room via helicopter!), twists (Capt. Montgomery was revealed to be a major part of the conspiracy to cover up Beckett’s mother’s murder), tragedy (RIP Capt. Montgomery), and a heck of a cliffhanger — but not one of those cliffhangers that’s going to bother me until September. There was enough resolution in this episode to make me feel satisfied rather than annoyed. I think that’s a result of a few things that led up to the final moment, which found Beckett being shot at Montgomery’s funeral and Castle finally saying “I love you” as she faded into unconsciousness. 'How I Met Your Mother' finale: Guess who's getting married!

HIMYM

When EW spoke with How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan last week, she warned us that her show’s sixth finale would leave viewers wanting more: “I think the fans will be really happy because it will be satisfying and frustrating all at the same time, which is what you want out of a season finale,” Hannigan explained. You weren’t kidding, sister. [Note: Spoilers ahead!]

In typical HIMYM fashion, the last moments of tonight’s episode answered one question while raising several others. (This really is the Lost of sitcoms, isn’t it?) READ FULL STORY »

Would you watch 'Law & Order: SVU' without Mariska Hargitay? (What if Jennifer Love Hewitt replaced her?)

With Law & Order: Los Angeles officially rebooted into oblivion and Law & Order: Criminal Intent halfway through its final season, we are fast approaching a cultural moment that once seemed unthinkable: a TV landscape with only one Law & Order series still in production. But Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has always been the impervious panzer tank of the franchise; while its brethren vacillated through various cast changes, the SVU team has essentially held steady since the show debuted in 1999. (There were more cast shake-ups in one miserable season of LOLA than in over a decade of SVU.)

Not even the SVU juggernaut is immune to the ravages of time, though, and it looks like series star Mariska Hargitay will be stepping back from the series in its upcoming 13th season. READ FULL STORY »

With Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert’s weekend wedding now in the books — Shelton returned to Twitter Monday afternoon with the message, “Hey y’all I’m back!!!!! Without my sack!!!!,” and “Mrs Shelton” became a trending topic after Lambert tweeted, “Mrs Shelton here! Winning!!!!!” – LIFE.com is celebrating country music’s best couples with a 50-slide photo album. It starts with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans (pause to appreciate their color coordination on their wedding day), naturally includes the eternal Johnny Cash and June Carter and the tumultuous George Jones and Tammy Wynette, and in addition to Blake and Miranda, involves the likes of Tim and Faith and Garth and Trisha (along with Keith and Nicole and Brad and Kimberly, which could be reaching, but both actresses serve as muses, so we’ll let it slide).  READ FULL STORY »

'Spider-Man' draws Broadway crowds after reboot

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is once again a top competitor at the Broadway box office. Since re-opening on Thursday after a three and a half week hiatus, the newly remodeled show has grossed $809,941, making it the week’s twelfth highest earner — despite the fact that it skipped Tuesday and Wednesday night performances. Before its self-imposed break, Spider-Man was reliably earning upwards of $1.3 million a week despite cold reviews, vying with Wicked for the top spot.

ESPN tell-all: Keith Olbermann = Chevy Chase

With just a week before Little Brown’s release of James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales’ warts-and-all oral history of ESPN, it’s becoming clear that former SportsCenter anchor Keith Olbermann is this story’s Chevy Chase. Recall that Miller and Shales collaborated on Live From New York, a most-excellent uncensored history of SNL that described the clash of egos when Chase, the show’s first star, went on to bigger, if not necessarily better, things. In Olbermann’s case, he wasn’t the network’s first breakout star — that would be Chris Berman — but his on-air brilliance was unrivaled, according to the first excerpts of Those Guys Have All the Fun in GQ. “The guy who made ESPN a household word, the guy who made ESPN mean something in the market to everyone, was Keith Olbermann,” said ESPN producer, Bill Wolff. Luther Campbell is 'dead serious' about political run

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

Donald Trump may not be on the ballot next fall, but there are still some unlikely celebrities seeking public office. Take, for example, Luther Campbell, the raunchy impresario who fronted the controversial rap band 2 Live Crew. The former Uncle Luke is running for mayor of Miami-Dade County, and if he gets his way, he govern long time. Campbell, now 50, seems to recognize his controversial history makes him an unusual political candidate — his posters read, “I’m Dead Serious… Are You?” — but the Miami native has one thing his rivals lack: name recognition. Plus, he knows his fair share about the workings of government from the numerous obscenity court cases his music inspired. Still, I’m not so sure. Does his online commercial look “dead serious”? Breaking: Chord Overstreet gets haircut, now looks like Finn Hudson

Chord-Overstreet

Tired of living his Macaulay Culkin-meets-Bieber phase, Chord Overstreet (seen here at KIIS Wango Tango) got a new ‘do that channels someone closer to home: McKinley High’s own Finn Hudson. (Or any generic One Tree Hill character.) Wow, Sam, first you start dating Finn’s ex-girlfriend, and now you get his haircut? Can we expect to see a Single White Female episode of Glee in the future?
