MTV casts a hypothetical, live-action 'Daria' movie. Now I want them to make it for real

I’m not quite sure why MTV chose yesterday, of all days, to reveal its dream cast for a theoretical live-action movie based on Daria — but I’m not complaining. On the whole, the network’s casting choices are inspired, especially when it comes to their leading lady: Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza, who knows a thing or two about playing smart, sarcastic, and deadpan, was basically born to play Daria. MTV’s picks for Daria’s parents, uptight Helen (Annnette Bening) and hot mess Jake (Will Ferrell), are also nothing short of perfect. And I had to restrain myself from clapping in joy when I read who they selected to play Mr. DeMartino, Daria’s stressed-out, bug-eyed history teacher: Christopher Walken. Can’t you just hear him bellowing “CHEESE LOGS” in a fit of rage?  READ FULL STORY »

Continuing our exclusive series, American Idol vocal coach and arranger Debra Byrd and associate music director and arranger Michael Orland sat down with EW to discuss Wednesday night’s Top 3 performance show. For a decade, Byrd and Orland have been on the front lines with the contestants, from Hollywood Week to the grand finale in May. The two work with the contestants on their respective songs, helping them shine on the Idol stage and in front of a national TV audience. Click through to read their take on this week’s show, including how Haley got a Led Zeppelin song cleared for the program, how last-minute of a decision it was to have Haley’s dad perform with her onstage, and how Lauren responded to slipping up in the middle of a song. Judgment Day: Hunker down for the looming apocalypse with these 'instructional' movies

judgment-day

I don’t believe that the world is coming to an end on Saturday, but I’m a strong proponent in being prepared. Sooner or later, some doomsday alarmist is going to be right — I guess? — and it can’t hurt to be ready. While others might brace for the End by spending time with loved ones or in houses of worship, I’m preparing for what comes after the End by watching movies. There’s a lot that can be learned from Hollywood about what awaits the unfortunate survivors of a looming apocalypse, and I’d like to suggest the following mini-marathon to get your mind right. Andy Samberg sits down with 'Sesame Street' resident Bert. Move over Ernie (and James Lipton, for that matter)!

Consider the talk show wars over, people! There’s a new reigning champ on the gab fest circuit… and it’s Bert from Sesame Street. Yes, everyone’s favorite unibrow-ed puppet has his own new series, called, fittingly, “Conversations with Bert,” and it’s equal parts hilarious, adorable, and surprisingly insightful. In his first installment, Bert — who opted to go sans sidekick, as Ernie is nowhere to be found — sat down with Saturday Night Live star and “all-around groovy guy” Andy Samberg for a hilarious round table conversation, compete with “snappy comedy banter,” fun facts (if Andy he could be any fabric he would be velour or rayon, Bert’s last read was a book by a “depressed Russian novelists”), and milk breaks! All we have to say is watch and learn, Charlie Rose and James Lipton. Watch and learn. READ FULL STORY »

Should there be a 'Bridesmaids' sequel?

bridesmaids

If this past weekend’s unexpected box office numbers, the critics, and the EW.com readers posting in the comments sections are any indication, people can’t seem to get enough of Bridesmaids. And while many fans are getting their fill by seeing the top-notch comedy more than once in the theaters (and readying a spot for it in their DVD collections), the idea of a possible sequel ought to make them sing Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On” from the rooftops with excitement.

That’s right, a possible sequel: Bridesmaids‘ director Paul Feig, along with the movie’s scene (and puppy) stealer Melissa McCarthy, spoke to Vulture about the prospect of a follow-up to the Spring smash. Said Feig, “Who knows? I mean, it depends how we do in the next couple weeks, but I know there’s definitely … it’s already been brought up. So, um, you know, when you get a group that’s this deep and this good, it’s a crime to not use them again. You just want to make sure that you do it as well as you did the first one and try to make it better, even. So, we’re up for the challenge.” Better yet, McCarthy seemed game for the idea. The actress said, “I will show up wherever these guys tell me to go.” (EW reached out to Feig, who was unavailable for comment. Universal is not commenting on the possibility of a sequel.)

While nothing is set in stone, I can’t help but think: Would we want the chance to revisit hilarious BFFs Annie (Kristen Wiig) and Lillian (Maya Rudolph) and the rest of the “stone cold pack of weirdos”? READ FULL STORY »

Star Tours jumps to lightspeed: Exclusive video of Disney's reboot of the classic Star Wars ride

Hang on, we’re making the jump to lightspeed.

Tomorrow the all-new Star Tours—The Adventures Continue, a reimagining of the classic Star Wars-themed ride, makes its highly anticipated debut at Walt Disney World (at Disneyland, June 3), and unless you have a T-14 hyperdrive, it’s about as close as you’re going to get to that Galaxy Far, Far Away.

The entire attraction has been upgraded—from the façade to the queue to the ride itself. Most importantly, the attraction received a 3D facelift courtesy of Industrial Light and Magic. But for this video first look hosted by The Clone Wars’ own Ashley Eckstein you won’t need to don your flight glasses (yes, that’s what Disney’s calling the requisite 3D eyewear). Check out the video after the break: READ FULL STORY »

Who will go home tonight on 'American Idol'? Who SHOULD go home?

Idol-Final-Three

If recent American Idol history has any bearing on this season, then I think Haley and Scotty are headed to the finale tonight, thanks in large part to the Perk of the Proud Paterfamilias. No one but no one can resist the sentimental pull of a father who openly displays his affection and pride in his child on national television. (Who can forget Season 8 winner Kris Allen’s weepy pappy? And I still maintain that the tears from the papa of Season 9′s Lee DeWyze helped secure him the crown over Crystal Bowersox.) But while Scotty’s pops expressed his pride (and then adorably told us to lock them doors) and Haley got to perform on stage with her pops, poor Lauren had to settle for her beaming-but-also-terrified-to-talk-on-TV mother talking about how the worry of the show had aged her 20 years.

So that’s one way to prognosticate the outcome of tonight’s voting. But what if we go by the judges’ pronouncements of who won each round?  READ FULL STORY »

David Letterman 'upset, crushed, disappointed' by Oprah snub

David Letterman was not invited to Oprah’s “big gala” in Chicago on Tuesday night, and the late-night host, whose relationship with the queen of daytime television has never been hunky-dory, is so upset he feels like his head is going to explode. Or so he says.

On last night’s show, Letterman first honored Winfrey during his monologue, laying it on so thick in his typical flip style that you couldn’t tell if he meant a word of it. Take a look below. READ FULL STORY »

Now that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is back up and running after a three-week hiatus, the show is going to have to face some of the same theater critics who panned it in February — but perhaps not just yet. The $65 million musical’s producers are asking critics to withhold reviews of the revamped production until its new official opening date of June 14. “We have made it very clear that we are inviting critics to attend just ahead of the June 14 opening night date, once the show is frozen,” said spokesman Rick Miramontez in an exclusive statement to EW. “Everyone at Spider-Man is delighted that the critics remain so excited and anxious about this production, but we implore them to exercise some degree of restraint over the next few, short weeks leading up to opening night.” READ FULL STORY »

Neil Patrick Harris talks 'Company': Watch the exclusive video here!

Last month, Neil Patrick Harris led an all-star cast — including Stephen Colbert, Christina Hendricks, and Jon Cryer — in a staged reading of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company at NYC’s Lincoln Center. But the four-nights-only show left plenty of ticketless fans clamoring for their chance to see the spectacle — enough, in fact, that the show’s producers decided to film it and bring it to theaters for a limited run starting June 15. In an exclusive interview with EW’s Dave Karger (below), Harris chats about his experience on the show and why co-star Colbert  turned out to be a musical-theater natural. And there’s more — head to EW’s Facebook page and “Like” us to see an exclusive video of Harris talking about his upcoming gig hosting this year’s Tony Awards on June 12. READ FULL STORY »
