Matthew Modine officially cast in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Christopher Nolan’s filmography is peppered with plenty of recurring motifs — murdered wives, flashbacks, frowny-faced men in fantastic suits — but one of the most enjoyable aspects of the director’s recent movies is his tendency to cast beloved ’80s actors in minor roles. So The Dark Knight featured Anthony Michael Hall as a vain newscaster and Eric Roberts as a smug mobster and Inception featured a gorgeously irate Tom Berenger. (You can even throw in David Bowie’s appearance in The Prestige, since the whole notion of “David Bowie, Actor” is so ’80s.) Nolan is continuing the trend with The Dark Knight Rises: EW has confirmed that Matthew Modine, star of Full Metal Jacket and Married to the Mob, has been cast in the upcoming Bat-threequel. A report in Variety said that Modine was playing a character named “Nixon,” but Modine’s reps couldn’t confirm that piece of information. (Given Nolan’s penchant for secrecy, I’m still not convinced that The Dark Knight Rises isn’t just a cover for the filming of Inception 2: The Dreaming.)

The Variety report also indicated that Tom Conti and 11-year-old actress Joey King have also been cast in the movie, but Modine’s casting is certainly the big news. It’s a fair bet that Modine will be playing a character invented by the Nolan brothers for the movie, although feel free to start digging through Bat lore for any reference to a character named “Nixon.”

Popwatchers, are you stoked to see Modine in such a major release?

I’m glad that Matthew Modine has joined the cast. I’ve been saying that the cast still feels incomplete and like it’s missing key characters. It feels complete now. If they add any other recognisable actors in this film, it will be a bonus.

    • I have a bad feeling about this

I don’t care what the official line is from Nolan and company – the storyline they are going with for TDKR is plan B. It feels almost certain the original plan was to continue the story with the Joker as one of the villains – I have a feeling this movie will be the weakest of the three

      • Howard

The weakest of the three for this trilogy could still be a great movie.

continue the story with joker? a whole extra movie focusing on the joker? get real dude, that was never the plan

      • shanebendrell

Actually Joe that WAS the plan. They felt the Joker was too big of a character to Kill in one movie. Nolan was not a fan of Burton killing the joker in one shot in the original Batman

        @joe/howard –

I still hope for a great movie but still feel it may be weak and while I don’t have insider info on what the plan was, it just feels like there was a little more story left with the Joker and this Bane/Catwoman situation is Plan B. I think its great that the League of Shadows is coming back BUT it would have been much cooler with Joker as well and not Bane/Catwoman (not a fan of Anne Hathaway)

Joseph Gordon Levitt is playing JOhn BlaKE which is a pseudonym for The JOKEr. watch…

Matthew Modine should have joined the A-list years ago and should have only been doing movies that went to the cinema. Unfortunately, he has remained a straight to DVD king but he is an underrated actor. So, I hope that he does more movies which get released properly at cinemas, tries to reach his full potential as an actor and tries to win an Oscar.

What’s with these weird spammers writing the same comment on every site?? Eat a D*ck dude.

      • Jenn

I know! The positivity is creeping me out.

      • Bradley

I saw it on multiple sites too and that led me here! I just googled that comment and it pulled up 8 different sites where that same comment is posted on articles similar to this one and they are all with different usernames. Why would this happen?

Also Rutger Hauer was in Batman Begins.

    • Mae

Oh yeah! Good catch. At first I was surprised when Eric Roberts was in The Dark Knight, but I eneded up liking him in the role.

  • Dee Jones

I know he`s happy he got that call. I know he had to audition, because they most likely wasn`t thinking of him when casting the part. Well good for him!

  • bvfg

ZOMG he’s gonna be da Riddle!

    • Emilio

      Let it go

  • StewyFan

How many people are gonna be in this movie?

  • tavfreh wefgg

    looks so old

  • ST

He looks quite a bit older in this picture. Granted, the last movie I saw him was a Hallmark movie (I think it was, “What the Deaf Man Heard” maybe?) but he seems so much thinner in this pic. And he didn’t need to lose weight…

  • V

    Looks like Julian Assange :X

  • Gary

There is a character in Batman named Lew Moxon, which is kinda close to Nixon. He hired Joe Chill to kill Bruce Wayne’s father.

  • Rutiger

The Nixon character is just a cover . Clearly he is taking over for Heath Ledger as Private Joker.

  • janie jones

Awesome!Matthew Modine is a great addition to the cast, can’t wait!

  • Alicia

(Given Nolan’s penchant for secrecy, I’m still not convinced that The Dark Knight Rises isn’t just a cover for the filming of Inception 2: The Dreaming.)

This ^ would be so fraking amazing! I’ll still go see it even if it’s ‘only’ Batman but my god we need another Inception film.

  • J

    Modine is the man!!!!

  • David

I’ve always liked Matthew Modine as an actor, and still think he’s yet to come across the perfect role that will showcase what a gifted actor he is. Hopefully DKR will give him a much-deserved boost in that direction.
