How did Ken Jeong do as host of the Billboard Music Awards?

Community‘s Ken Jeong — or as most probably know him, “that Asian man from the Hangover movies” — hosted the Billboard Music Awards last night, and, admittedly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from him. The characters he’s most notable for follow the same blueprint: clinically insane with a side of funny. But I wasn’t sure if his normal shtick would be enough to carry an award show. In fact, I’m still not sure it was.

I liked that they acknowledged the odd choice of host in the first minutes of the show (and three cheers for Jeong, who tinkled those ivories to Coldplay’s “Clocks” with major skill!). I also think that on a host-scale of James Franco to Neil Patrick Harris, he ranked somewhere in the “acceptable” range, especially when he reverted to the slightly gross humor we all love. (See the 3:06 mark on the video below.)

One of following recognisable actors with comedic experience should have been the host instead:
Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg, Eddie Izzard, Rowan Atkinson, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Rob Schneider, Jeremy Piven, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, William Shatner, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tim Allen, Chevy Chase, John Goodman, Billy Connolly, Danny DeVito, Robin Williams, George Lopez, John Cleese, Steve Coogan

You forget it’s not really an award show, there are no nominations etc, you just win based on what the charts say. So I don’t think any well known comedians were really beating down the door to get this gig.

Rob Schneider? Danny DeVito? JEREMY PIVEN???
Ken did awkwardly bad, but most of the names on that list would have done the same.
The awards themselves were a joke.

Danny DeVito?…dude you should host for that list of hosts..that was hysterical!…isn’t Rowan Atkinson’s whole schtick is that he doesn’t talk?…hahahah…excellent

Why are all your suggestions white guys?

    • mark

George Lopez is not a white guy, and he is especially unfunny. I would have tried to get chappelle

He sucked big time. None of his jokes were funny. It made for a boring night whenever he was on. I think they could have gotten someone more experienced or funnier.

  • Its Um

I think that Sr. Chang did fine on the Billboard show. This is basically the music version of the MTV movie awards, and there is nothing serious about it. He was definitely better than some of could, and have, hosted awards shows! (I, too, was impressed with his piano skills on Clocks!)

Man, he made me cringe, I was so embarrassed for him. Had to leave the room during his shtick. If this is what passes for entertainment at awards shows, we’re in a lot of trouble.

This asian monkey was not funny. He should stick to food delivery.

    • oracle

You should stick with spanking your own monkey.

I’m an Asian and he was an embarrassment to all Asians in the world. He was a buffoon. I didn’t want to watch the show anymore. He reminded me of a court jester, never to be taken serious and just there to amuse the people. The only problem he wasn’t funny at all.

  • ken toong

He is an embarassment to asians, stick to your medical practice and eat more kimchee.
