UPDATED: First look at Bane from 'The Dark Knight Rises': Those back muscles are freaking me out

Warner Bros.

The Internet was all aflame today, thanks the inaugural “happening” in the viral web campaign for The Dark Knight Rises. It involved decoding an ominous audio track playing on thedarkknightrises.com, which apparently led you to the Twitter hashtag #thefirerises, which then led you to a photo-mosaic of Tom Hardy as the masked villain Bane, which finally led to the full image you can see above. Did I mention this film started shooting yesterday

More to the point: Holy Trapezius, Batman! That is some wickedly terrifying back musculature. Bane also appears to be wearing some kind of ominous, skull-like headgear that wouldn’t look out of place at a Slipknot concert, but I’m still stuck on the fact that it looks like Bane’s back could punch me in the face.

What do you make of this first look at The Dark Knight Rises‘ Big Bad, PopWatchers? And who’s gonna hit the gym tonight?

I hope the climactic fight between Christian Bale and Tom Hardy will knock everyone on their ass and be so amazing and action-packed, audiences all over the world will be left breathless.

    • Absolutely disagree

There are better pictures already posted on Screen Rant and Cinemablend. I hope Nolan ends the series with the back breaking end of the Batman – that would be incredible and clearly draw a line between his films and the stupid reboot the WB will inevitably do too soon

      • KEVIN

That would be a terrible ending

      • Jango Davis

Yeah, breaking bats back was a weak storyline that simply sucked

—-TDK had too many Hollywood explosions. Blowin’ stuff up just cuz they can, not necessarily pivatol to the plot. Batman is the reluctent hero. He should let Gotham clean up its own mess and drink a beer.

      • bryan pickering

That would an awsome ending, that dude that said it would be horrible obviously doesnt read comics. Batman must loose in order to break the overly used hero cliche ending. I’m rooting for Bane to beat Batman to a pulp, then Catwoman decides to be an aliie instead of an enemy and helps Batman stop Bane.

Mmmmm yummmmm! I’d let him punch me in the face with his back while I ran my fingers over it over and over. All you guys out there….take notes. NOW THAT’S A MAN TEE HEE!

      • Toms

        superhero back wax?

    • hc

I salute your fandom and unbridled enthusiasm. Good on you!

    • Sam J

Nolan is one of my favorite directors(Memento), but he is not the best action director. The chase through downtown Gotham(Chigago) on the Batbike was kinda cool but repeatedly spoiled on the previews. TDK had too many Hollywood explosions. Blowin’ stuff up just cuz they can, not necessarily pivatol to the plot. Batman is the reluctent hero. He should let Gotham clean up its own mess and drink a beer.

      • Helen

I agree – Nolan is brilliant on so many levels, but I frequently find the pure action scenes of his films overlong and somewhat generic. Ah, well. Nobody’s perfect.

      • Bob R.

Yep… and invite catwoman over for an absolutely Puuurrrfect evening of mutual preening.

      • Cat

Yeah, the fight scenes in Batman Begins were lacklustre.

  • Mason

The cast still feels incomplete and like it’s missing key characters.

    • SC

How could you possibly tell that?

We’ve got a new villain, a bunch of returning regulars, and two new civilians.

      • Absolutely disagree

Mason must be joking, the cast is loaded, there was a period last month where anouncements were coming almost everyday it felt like

    • MCS

I can understand where mason is coming from. I am not 100% satisfied with Bane and Catwoman as the villains.

      • Shane

at least its not a over-acting Poison Ivy and a goofy looking Bane like in the Batman and Robin Movie with George Clooney

      • Woot

And who said catwoman is a villain? They announced Anne Hathaway would be playing Selina Kyle… this could mean her character could contribute in many ways to the story and not necessarily be one of the villains.

      • Temporarily Anonymous (Yeah Right)

“And who said catwoman is a villain? They announced Anne Hathaway would be playing Selina Kyle… this could mean her character could contribute in many ways to the story and not necessarily be one of the villains.”

        *: )

Then you’ve just proven their point, Woot.

        *

While I feel the Dark Knight Rises publicity stunts are going great according to the EW article, it might be even greater if they could fill into it a few more villains, making it a royal rumble for Batman.

      • me

The more villains the better right? That always works as Spiderman 3 and Iron Man 2 showed. Also, don’t forget that the cops will also be trying to bring down Batman.

      • uu

Don’t forget that Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Superman II all had multiple villains.

      • John

As previously stated, Catwoman has been portrayed as a hero as well. We’re not talking about the 1966 Adam West “Batman” series, we’re talking about the “Batman Begins” trilogy. It was unexpected to have Scarecrow destroy Arkham, so anything might happen.

However, I do agree. Bane and Catwoman are both kind of “been there, done that” villains. I do think they should have given a new villain a chance like they did with Scarecrow asn Ra’s Al Ghul. They should have used somebody like Firefly or Clayface. Even somebody like the Mad Hatter would do. I’ve seen Catwoman in action, and she wasn’t something I was hoping to see in “The Dark Knight Rises” as she’s too predictable. Characters like Film Freak and Catman are great and should not be underestimated. And I’m sorry to ramble, but I am a Bat-Fan and I know ALL of the Rogue Gallery.

  • Barrett

Hey Adam, why didn’t put the high-res image on here?!

    • ST

Barrett, I don’t think it’s available yet (according to the post).

      • Kevin

It’s on the Dark Knight Rises Facebook page.

      • Absolutely disagree

Its on every other website, check out AICN, Cinemablend, Screen Rant – really anywhere, this story broke several hours before EW posted anything

      • Mr. Rush

it is available, dark horizons, among others, have it available.

    • JLC

Because as they say, Warner Brothers, like EW, is owned by Time Warner Entertainment. The mothership probably won’t allow EW to post the clean version until it’s “official.”

  • Carly

what is up with that audio clip?!? it sort of sounds like they are repeating father maybe? crazy!

    • The Third

      I’m guessing it’s Ra Al Ghul’s gang?

  • Abi

I would, like, die to be in The Dark Knight Rises. Being around all those hot guys. That would be my biggest dream in life! I want to be a villainess! I
would be one that was probably nice – no, I kind of want to be evil! I don’t know what I’d want to be – just a villainess. I didn’t read the comic books, but my little brothers are obsessed with Batman.

    • Wha’ever

I so agree with your first sentence. When I read “Tom Hardy – pic”, I just clicked thinking it was about something else entirely… Dirty mind working…

  • Cheri

but I’m still stuck on the fact that it looks like Bane’s back could punch me in the face.

    lmao

  • Mother Nature

    Tommmmm. Wow.

  • Matt W.

I hope this shuts everyone up about Hardy playing Bane.

    • Brandon

If anyone thinks Tom Hardy can’t play Bane, they obviously haven’t seen the movie “Bronson.” Check it out.

      • Silk Spectre

Bronson- what a weird, great film. Tom Hardy was beyond excellent. My favorite part is when he talks to himself on the stage with one half of his face orderlys and the other side himself. That proved to be what an amazing actor he is.

  • Shakira

Wohooo!! Christopher Nolan is the undisputed best and greatest director in the world! The Dark Knight Rises will be the biggest movie ever! Watch out Avatar!

  • Quirky

I can’t picture Tom Hardy being more ripped than he was in Bronson. Is it even possible?

  • Rey

Hig-res of this image has been online for awhile now.

  • Irene

Do you hear that sound? It is the sound of fangirl squeels.

  • dmac2498

F***ing Sweet!!!!! Bring it on Bane!!!

  • JD

I hope Batman has a good chiropractor!!!!

    • A-K87

Best comment in a few days
