How did James, Haley, Scotty, and Lauren choose their songs this week? What was it like working with Lady Gaga? Did the unfamiliar songbook of Read the full post.
Compliments to the two coaches. Love EW having this feature. I check them out every week.
1. Really appreciate that Debra understood that the judges had put Haley in a fight or fold position, and she backed Haley’s call to stand up for herself. Especially after the insipid “you don’t know what really inspires you because you picked the wrong song” J-Lo routine.
2. I listened again to Lauren Alaina’s “Always” and liked it more. Mike Orland explained perfectly to me WHY I liked it and now I think Lauren had the 2nd best song of the night.
3. Yes to them (or at least Debra) saying Lady Gaga’s advice to Haley WAS pure gold. It was a pleasure watching that session and Haley trying it Gaga’s way – and seeing the lightbulb come on in Haley’s eyes as she did the line as Gaga suggested. And that in turn drove Haley to make over the whole thing. The creative process at work. Lady Gaga is controversial but that is one crazy talented B*tch! Super good mentor and very entertaining with her schticks with James, “lets play evil” w/Lauren, and especially Scotty as inhabitant of a polar opposite universe. (And props to Scotty for handling the good-natured outrageousness with equal good nature and aplomb!)
4. Good advice to Scotty. “I want to do another Elvis song”. No! You just did one last week. You are Elvised out!
the thing is there’s a fine line between sticking up for yourself and just being disrespectful to people who have been in the business for a long time and not their stuff. no one was being mean to her or unjustly rude. they were giving her constructive criticism, something she knew would happen when she went on the show. if all she wants is people to praise her then she’ll never grow as a performer. i agree having a thick skin and standing up for yourself are good things, but she also has to be open to receiving critique and learning and growing from it.
Amen to that. If you can’t stand the fire, stay out of the kitchen. Haley is definite one little immature brat that can’t handle criticism. She’s a prime example of today’s youth: no respect or class whatsoever. Go home and cry to momma!
If Simon was there and Princess Haley back talk to him. Simon would have put her in her place. Sorry Haley but if people that have been in the business tell you something you don’t like, you don’t BACK TALK THEM. Haley you will be eliminated tonight.
Yeah, but if Simon were there, Haley wouldn’t have talked back to him, because along with the criticism he would be giving Haley, he would be giving just as much (if not way more) to the other singers.

let put J. Lo, Randy and J. Lo in a sing-off and see who could sing? Longivity cannot be interpreted into the level of talent here. Randy is lucky that he got this AI gig. Otherwise, nobody would know who the hell he is. And for J.Lo without plastic surgeries, makeups and autotune, she is just a “Jennie in the block”.

yeah because here is the sort of ‘constructive’ advice she gets from JLo:
On her Adele song: baaaaby, baby, it was ok and here and there you even did it your own but not good to do a song everyone is so familiar with, not the right choice, don’t pick something so popular, not good choice
(side note her itunes of it sounds great!)
On her Earth Song: baaaaaby, baby, not a good song choice, yes we all see how powerfully it moved you but no good, not a good song choice, baby, baby, you need to pick a really popular song, you need to pick something everyone is familiar with, some really popular pop song (and then they praise scotty right after for a song nobody ever heard of because it made him feel moved!)
Haley misses like two notes in Rolling in the Deep and Randy calls her for pitchy and then not a peep about someone else missing literally half the notes!
Oh and he even got caught on mic saying to JLo that he was not rooting for Haley as Haley was right up on the stage the other week.
(and for the record MJ screamed parts too, it was written that way, now you may still not like the song or her but don’t say she massacred it by ‘changing’ it that way, you may not like it be she did not massacre his song and all she was trying to say is that she thought it was beautiful and meaningful how MJ arranged it!)
again i’m hardly saying she is above criticism or advice, gaga certainly helped, but she’s just been singled out and now many think she is the only one who always has weak performances since they call everything else great and yeah people with ears and mind of their own know otherwise but you see tons of people saying that it is true because the judges know a lot and said that (and BTW Steven Tyler didn’t agree and got kind of PO at Randy about it)

I’m just crossing my fingers that Haley doesn’t go home tonight. We need her in the top 3.
Snotty Scotty should have been gone a long time ago. His mommy and daddy will get him a contract if he doesn’t win it all. So he’s got an outlet, unlike some of the others.
How much $$$ did Haley’s dad pay for her to stay on American Idol. James should have won this by a long shot! He is and always has been the best. I do like Haley but she’s definitely in no way shape or form better than James! This makes people not want to continue to watch American Idol. Good luck James and God Bless.
Seriously if she could really sing it a half an OCTAVE higher than Martina then she wouldn’t have all the “big note” confidence issues. A half step is half of a note. Really, really big difference.

Love your comments- very fair and unbiased. A good look behind the dcrnes. I am heartbroken James was voted off last night – my daughter-in-law and I are some of the many Durbinators who voted for the full two hours every week so it is hard to understand – especially since James was never in the bottom three. So invested this year because of who he was – done for this year.
I totally agree with Debra Byrd about Randy and J.Lo’s criticism on Haley’s choice for inspiration song. Those 2 were just being mean to Haley. Maybe Michael Orlando and Debra Byrd should be the judges on AI. They know what they are talking about. After all, who know about singing techniques better than them?
I’m posting this here… I had it posted on another thread, so forgive me if you receive this twice. I just had to express how I felt…
I actually just watched this episode last night… and I was blown away by Haley’s “Earth Song.” I had read all of the negative comments about it (even from Haley fans) and was expecting the worst. Wow. I think, unequivocally, it was her strongest overall performance yet. Yes, the vocals were better on Gaga’s “You and I” (which I also loved) and “I, Who Have Nothing”… for purely vocals, those were superior… but Haley has always been a bit awkward on stage and on “Earth Song”, she lost all that awkwardness and got lost in the song… the choir even was into it, too… the call and response with them was brilliant. And I LOVED the screaming. That’s what the song is about… Michael Jackson is shouting: “What about this? What about that?” For Randy to suggest that she should have done riffs and runs at the end is maybe the stupidest thing he’s ever uttered. You want to hear “WhaaaWaaat Abooooowwwooooutt the Chiiiillllldreeeeiinnnn?” melismatic crap through that part? NOOOOOO! Then it becomes about “What about my singing? What about my voice?” Totally negates the whole song. She did it perfectly and those screams were right on pitch. Awesome. First time I’ve seen her forget about being on stage and just let go and give it everything she’s got. And that song is NOT the top of Haley’s range. It was for her chest voice, but in her falsetto, she can go as high as she wants as was proven in “Moanin’”. She should kick in to her head voice next week just to show Randy that indeed, she has a much wider range than he remembers. Bottom line: “Earth Song” rocked. My favorite performance (along with Casey’s “Nature Boy”) since the top 24.
Thanks, you’re exactly right on all points. To say she was “screaming” it implies loss of musicality and sells it way short. She was in total control of her voice and was manipulating the notes musically. The growly tone was appropriate for a song about anguished call to action. People always complain about her connection to the song– well, there you go. Unfortunately, the judges’ misplaced critiques were a green light for detractors to interject “WHAT ABOUT WHEN SHE SCREAMED EARTH SONG?!?!?!” for the rest of eternity.

During Haley’s home visit, you could tell she comes from a family of modest means. Scotty was the rich kid in this competition.
