Rachel Weisz eyes new 'Bourne' film, but what is a Bourne Girl?

Hear the term Bond Girl and an immediate image comes to mind: a glamorous and curvy beauty with an appreciation for double entendres. But a Bourne Girl is something entirely different. In fact, it’s not exactly clear yet what a Bourne Girl is. In the original Bourne Identity with Matt Damon, Franka Potente played the punkish girl who got pulled into Bourne’s wormhole of amnesia and assassins. She wasn’t long for his world, of course, and the only other major female characters have been American versions of Bond’s M: Joan Allen’s skeptical CIA agent and Julia Stiles’ sympathetic Agency technician (and possible pre-amnesia romantic interest). So what is a Bourne Girl? Clone Dr. Lilith Sternin Crane and you’re in the ballpark.

That said, whispers that Rachel Weisz is in talks to join Jeremy Renner in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy, first reported by Deadline, are intriguing. One, after three testosterone-filled films, a brighter female presence might introduce a welcome dynamic. Two, whereas a Bond Girl is boxed in by the franchise’s parameters of what she can and can’t do, how she can and can’t look, Weisz can take her character anywhere, especially since she won’t need to kowtow to an undisputed star and inevitable hero. Heck, Weisz’s character might be Renner’s agent’s equal in every sense. (She might outlive him. Or even be the one to kill him.)

Do you think the Bourne franchise needs a more involved female character, or is the shaky-handed, quick-cutting action formula enough to keep you interested?

I think the Bourne franchise needs Matt Damon. I’m fine with multiple Bonds and Bruce Waynes, but something about the Bourne movies only wants me to see Damon in that role. It’s like not having Harrison Ford playing Indiana Jones.

Couldn’t have said it better. I don’t care who they get for the girl. How they try to portray this as happening outside of the realm of Jason Bourne or who they put in the male lead, I won’t be seeing it without Damon.

Rachel is incredibly gorgeous. I love her. She’s really beautiful and a really sweet girl.

  • Jay

Most of all, the Bourne franchise needs JASON BOURNE!!!! That seems like a no-brainer to me.
If Damon isn’t going to do it, re-casting the role would be better than a side story.

    • Pittner

I would much prefer a side story instead of having someone else play Jason Bourne.

  • Timmy

I’m more interested in this movie now because Rachel Weisz is in it. She’s a great actress and she would do this series justice.

This whole “Bourne girl” makes me feel like they are going to turn this movie into something like the Bond movies, which is everything the Bourne movies AREN’T! I wouldnt be surprised if Bourne now has a cool car and some gadgets. Bourne was the anti Bond dont ruin it.

Those crying that Damon is not going to be in it should know that is film is more a spin off than a sequel. If you can’t understand that then you have problems.

And Rachel makes this film for me a must see.

    • Jay

@Q: I think we all understand that. But you wouldn’t make a Bond movie without Bond in it, would you? This just seems like they are attaching a random action movie to the Bourne franchise to make a quick buck

      • Pittner

The 3rd one already seemed like it wasn’t all about Jason Bourne and more about the world in which he lived. It felt more like an ensemble to me.

  • Sara

The whole Bourne girl thing means that Rachel Weisz is playing a assassin, not the girlfriend. She’s too strong a actress to play that role.

    • Tiffany

Or the equalivant of ‘M’ in the Bond Films? If these films are to be the prequel to Identity there would be someone that he would report to.

  • lio

Nah she should do that movie with johnny depp instead.Does anyone agree?

  • Complex simpleton

Bourne doesn’t have girls, Bourne has women. Smart, kick-azz women.

    • Clint

      Damn right:)

  • Jon

She’s a bad actress. Her Oscar was a travesty!

    • Mary

Rachel Weisz is a amazing actress and she deserved her Oscar in spades.

      • Voncile

I thohgut finding this would be so arduous but it’s a breeze!

    • Clint

Jon, you would not know good acting if it bit you on the ass. Rachel’s Oscar was well earned.

      • Jon

Please. She’s Jessica Alba with an accent.

      • Lily

@Jon: “Jessica Alba with an accent”??? You are so idiotic. It is obviously apparent then that you don’t know Jessica Alba even if she bit you in the azz — though, I’m sure you’d want her to.

  • smac

I wouldn’t do it if i was her.

  • Fox

No Damon….No Bourne….not interested in seeing movie

Since when was Joan Allen’s character comparable to Bond’s Q? She’s the entire subplot!

I’m all for females finally getting to fight in the Bourne series, but let’s not make “Bourne Girls” a thing since that make it sound they’re dispensable.

    • Chloe

      Well said.

  • Hannah

Jeremy Renner is intense … really good actor. He’ll need an actress of equal intensity. I saw Rachel in a WWII sniper movie, can’t remember what it was called, couldn’t take my eyes off of her. She’s a good choice.
