At last night’s 92nd Street Y event in Manhattan, Daniel Radcliffe addressed the public reaction to his not being nominated for a Tony Award for his starring role in Broadway’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The boy who’s been Harry Potter since he was 11 years old was diplomatic in his conversation with host Jordan Roth, saying that he was flattered to be thought of in the same class as some of the nominated actors. “The thing that shocked me was everybody else’s reaction to me, and how they started treating me — because it was like I lost a relative,” said Radcliffe. “In my opinion, it was sweet, but over the top. People would ask me, ‘Are you OK?’ And I’d go, ‘I’m really OK!’
Fortunately for Radcliffe, he seems to have the proper perspective on the entire matter. “I think I speak for 99 percent of actors when I say that the reason we do this job, while it’s lovely to get recognized by your peers, it’s not the reason why we do it,” said Radcliffe. “The people that do this job for awards and recognition are kind of worshiping at the wrong altar, and I’m not really quite sure if I want to know those people.”

Daniel Radcliffe on a ‘How to Succeed’ movie

Such a good guy! He’s has a special place in my heart since he publicly supported the Trevor Project. And, for the whole Harry Potter thing, too (and for trying to get with Diana Rigg on Extras).
Daniel: Do you still have that catsuit from ‘The Avengers’?
Dame Diana: Go away, Daniel…
Damn Daniel, Emma and Rupert are such classy young actors! As opposed to whiney little snots over here like Miley Cyrus, Lindsey Lohan and all the other like-minded trash. Plus, the HP kids can actually ACT! Wtf are we doing wrong on our side of the pond?
It’s our stellar public school system.
tainted water-has lead poisoning. Plus we dont know how to quit #itching at eachother and act classy when necessary.
Nobody watches award shows anymore. It’s only natural that he doesn’t care.
All the nominees in his category are outstanding. He was the victim of too many good performances this year.
It’s true, both Play and Musical Lead Actor categories were jammed this season. From what he said, I’m sure he’s content with the fact that he’s giving a wonderful performance and making hundreds people happy every night.
classy bloke.
What a classy guy! He seems to have a very healthy perspective on it all.
Three points to Gryffindor.
LoL
I love you! lol.. and Daniel Radcliffe too!
He’s so amazing. I love him so much.
But Dan’s 21 and has years ahead of him. I’m sure he will do even more Broadway and may even finally get a Tony. I can’t wait to see him in all of his upcoming projects like The Woman in Black, The Amateur Photographer, and the rumored re-make of All Quiet on the Western Front.
I love him too. He and Shia Lebouf are two of the most interesting grown up child actors I think. They both have very unique outlooks on life. I’m always impressed by their knowledge of literature, pop culture, etc. in interviews.
Thanks for this.
It also wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to mix in more posts about witty and well-adjusted young actors for a change.
I so agree. This guy is a class act all the way and it would be so refreshing to hear more about actors and actresses like this that care and aren’t so obsessed with their “fame”. So many of these actors get the biggest egos and I so hope that Daniel remains true to his craft. I’ve seen him on Broadway and that is where he will really bloom into one day one of our great stage actors. Harry Potter will be long gone and Daniel will always respect that is where he got his start. I hope he does not go the way of David Schwimmer who played “Ross” on Friends. When he was younger he was very grounded and very thankfull for Friends and now he is a pompus contentious and rude person, like so many other actors. Stay true Daniel and one day you will get nominated though it doesn’t sound like it matters to you!!
Class act. I’m not a fan of the films, but whenever I see an interview of Daniel Radcliffe I can’t help but want to click the link and read and/or watch it. It seems like a such a geniune person and seems to be very grounded- and considering the role he’s played for a good portion of his life, that’s very impressive to stay focus and not be like so many misguided child actors. Good for him ^_^
meant to say *not a fan of the Harry Potter films.
But Radcliffe is very talented, so yeah for him!
Imagine if folks like Daniel Radcliffe were what you focused on as opposed to all these fake celebrities like the Palins, the Kardashians, anyone on a REAL Housewive show, the Hefner girls, and the entire E channel. Radcliffe is one grounded actor who respects his art and his soul. Cannot say the same for most of Hollywood.
second that
Third that
Fourth it.
Fifth that. he has a really good head on his shoulders and is a greta person. Plus at only 21 he got enough acclaim that suggests he`ll continue doing a good work. All the best to him.
is sixthing it too much. can I add the Twilight bunch in there. Though EW has done a good job at not mentioning them for a while.
I’m go glad that Daniel grew up to be an outstanding young man. He is what every young actor should aspire to be.
“The people that do this job for awards and recognition are kind of worshiping at the wrong altar, and I’m not really quite sure if I want to know those people.”
LILO anyone?
You would be correct if he had said “The people that do this job for fame, booze and blow are kind of worshiping at the wrong altar, and I’m not really quite sure if I want to know those people”
Though it seems likely he’d agree with that statement, too!
Daniel Radcliffe is a class act all the way. I think it is a shame that he didn’t get nominated but his ability to take it all in stride and have a healthy perspective is why he has remained so grounded.
Rita Skeeter had something on the head of the nominating committee.
Or Dolores Umbridge is the head of the nominating committee!
Lord Voldemort threatened every single one of them.
He’ll never get an EGOT with that attitude.
Your aitrlce was excellent and erudite.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love that boy any more than I already do. This kind of attitude is why he will continue to find success no matter what he does.
