Malin Akerman: Coming soon to every movie in 2012

New Line Cinema has confirmed that Malin Akerman has joined the cast of Rock of Ages, playing Constance Stack, a journalist who romances Tom Cruise’s Stacee Jaxx. But that’s not the only project the actress has on her plate. No, Rock of Ages brings Akerman to… six films headed to theaters in 2012: The Giant Mechanical Man, Medallion, Wildwood Inn, Serpent Girl, The Numbers Station, and, now Ages. As for 2011, Akerman appears in happythankyoumorepleaseElectra Luxx, The Bang Bang Club, Criminal Empire for Dummy’s, Wanderlust, and Inferno, the Linda Lovelace biopic that unceremoniously dumped Lindsay Lohan for the role before Akerman took it over. Phew. Move over, James Franco — Hollywood’s got a new busiest actor!

But this is not the first year Akerman has been roped into a good number of projects. In 2010, she appeared in The Romantics and Childrens’ Hospital, while in 2009, she starred in high-profile pics like Couples Retreat, The Proposal, and Watchmen. Yet, despite the numerous big-name — and indie — projects, Akerman has yet to officially hit A-list status. Will her current slate finally turn her into a marquee name? I should hope so — the actress has certainly paid her dues, and has stolen scenes in films like 27 Dresses. Plus, Akerman starred in HBO’s The Comeback. That credit alone justifies big-screen super-stardom, yes? We do want to see that, Valerie Cherish!

Are you happy to see Akerman nab a role in Rock of Ages alongside Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Paul Giamatti, PopWatchers? And are you prepared for 2012: The Year of Akerman?

“Yet, despite the numerous big-name — and indie — projects, Akerman has yet to officially hit A-list status.”

It might have something to do with…her not being very good. Let’s be honest here: the best thing Akerman’s got going is that she looks good naked.

    • Karate Pants

I’m relieved to hear someone say that. I’m tired of her already.

    • elena

Ditto. Sorry Malin Akerman, but you were bleh in The Proposal and so-so in Watchmen and kind of just…girl has NO personality. Maybe it’s the characters she’s picking to play, but boring. And interchangeable with about six other actresses.

    • lefty

She was actually pretty effing good in The Romantics…not the same cookie-butter goodie two shoes. Unfortunately, not many people saw that movie.

      • Mr. Holloway

You’re right…I don’t even remember what that is…might have to check it out.

    • nick

exactly. she’s not that good. hey, EW, since when does it work like this: “you got cast a lot, therefore, you get to be on the A-list”? i mean, what the hell are you talking about?

  • Reba

    She is a terrible actress

  • Dom

Malin is incredibly gorgeous. I love her. She’s really beautiful and a really sweet girl. Swedish perfection doesn’t get much purer than her.

  • Dean

Unreal. She is without a doubt the WORST working actress of our day. She’s unbelievably awful at her “craft” yet she still gets cast in all these films because she’s hot. Just goes to show what Hollywood values when it comes to young female actors.

    • Brett

The “worst”? Oh, come now. Megan Fox is out there. So’s Zooey Deschanel. Compared to them, Malin is Katharine Hepburn.

      • jessica

Oh my, I’ve never been so appalled by a comment. Katharine Hepburn? Are you freaking kidding me? Katharine Hepburn may have been different, but she was not lacking in talent or personality. She didn’t speak her lines as though she were just learning how to read the way Ackerman does! It amazes me that she gets these significant roles. I was extremely excited to see Rock of Ages, but now I think I’ll stay away. When she’s in a movie, I can’t focus on anything other than her terrible reading of her lines.

      • jessica

And by the way, I realize you said, “Compared to them,” but no one should ever try to make Ackerman analogous to Hepburn. Zooey Deschanel and Megan Fox at least exhibit some sort of personality when they act.

  • Hobbs

Love Malin Akerman, very attractive and sexy.
But they should have cast Julia Roberts in Rock of Ages instead of her. I’ve always wanted to see Tom Cruise do a movie with Julia Roberts. They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film.

    • Brett

The Battle of the Enormous Egos, you mean.

  • lisa

She is one actress whose constant casting I just do not get. Her acting isn’t that strong, she’s not particularly charismatic and beyond being blonde, she’s not remarkably good looking. I mean, I don’t mind her success, more power to her. I just don’t get it.

    • Stacie

      With you.

  • Johanna Börjeson

Wohoo! I’m Swedish like her. She deserves to be so happy and have lots of babies. Really lovely girl. I can’t wait for her to get some leading roles!
It would be great if they cast her in the future Hollywood versions of The Girl Who Played with Fire and/or The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.

  • mac

Not a great actress but not horrible either.

Not the best looking actress but not the ugliest either.

But she hates puppies and I can’t support a person like that.

  • Monty

To me, she will always be the girl that had a threesome with E and Sloan on Entourage…

    • Marissa

Haha that’s exactly how I always remember her, too!

“. . .the actress has certainly paid her dues, and has stolen scenes in films like 27 Dresses.”

One of the bonuses in watching movies to me is a chance to see pretty girls parading around on screen. And Akerman is surely one of those pretty women. That being said, for some reason, I don’t remember her role in “27 Dresses.”

    – –

And I do remember my girls (all those beautiful models and actresses).

    • Le HIROSHI

The funny thing is that I used Present Tense in my first posting because even at the time, following Kate’s reminder (that she “has stolen” scenes. . .), I still didn’t remember her MAIN supporting role in “27 Dresses” despite its SIGNIFICANCE (thanks to Rho for saving my time and to Karate Pants for restating my point indirectly).

      – –

Speaking for myself, for (for) what my comments might be really worth (or not), she might need to have her past efforts seriously analyzed. . .

      – –

      All the best, anyway.

  • Rho

She played Katherine Heigl’s sister who ended up engaged to Katherine’s boss who she’d been crushing on forever.

    • Karate Pants

But the point is that she’s forgettable.

      • Captain

        I didn’t forget her.

      • Apos

Forgettable? She’s about the only good thing I remember about “Watchmen”(Thank God)!

  • Kevin

She was perfect on The Comeback, and quite funny in The Heartbreak Kid as well. She isn’t my favorite, but I have always respected the fact that she will take smaller roles to get out and work with some of the best in the business. I felt her and Vince Vaughn were horribly mismatched in Couples Retreat, but that was the least of that movie’s problems.

  • Emoney

So, so pretty. And a downright bad actress. I will not likely be seeing any of the movies.

  • Liz Lemon

Sounds like she’s in a lot of movies that no one will see.

  • Captain

I really like Malin. I don’t know why people (seemingly just on the EW boards since I haven’t heard complaints elsewhere) say she is such a terrible actress. She’s really quite good and she’s a pretty girl. Maybe its the fact she’s Candian that makes me like her more but I there’s something about her that gets my attention. I can’t say I’ve loved many of her films (I did like 27 dresses) but I like her. BTW nice one EW, I didn’t think you’d get another The Comeback reference in there but there you go, proving me wrong.
