Jon Stewart on Osama bin Laden's death: 'We're back, baby!'

People tuning in to The Daily Show Monday night to hear Jon Stewart’s sober and objective analysis of the killing of Osama bin Laden may have been a little surprised as the New York native unapologetically basked in the news. “I am way too close to this whole episode to be rational about this in any way, shape, or form,” bubbled Stewart. “Last night was a good night — for me. And not just for New York or D.C. or America, but for human people … Al Qaeda’s opportunity is gone … Can they still do damage? I’m sure. But we’re back, baby.”

Stewart giddiness was unmistakable — he later called the episode “pure Id,” and proved it with an “enhanced” map of an aroused America with Florida at attention, so to speak. His good spirits extended to his treatment of the media, which he faulted only for its frustrating and needless suspense before President Obama gave his address Sunday night. “For God’s sake, Seacrest doesn’t draw out an elimination reveal this long!” he complained.

There were no contrarian angles tonight, no “Yes, but… ” rebuttals to conventional wisdom. Through it all, he had fun with comical headlines celebrating the terrorist’s demise: “Hairy Plotter and the Deathly Hello,” “Bye Bye Beardie,” the self referential “Death to Douchey,” and finally, “To Kill a Mockingturd.” “I suppose I should be expressing some ambivalence about the targeted killing of another human being, and yet… uh, no,” Stewart admitted.

“The face of the Arab world in America’s eyes for too long has been Bin Laden, and now it is not,” rejoiced Stewart, sounding a little like one of the kids frolicking outside the White House Sunday night. “Now the face is only the young people in Egypt and Tunisia and all the Middle Eastern countries around the world where freedom rises up.”

Signing off, Stewart promised to temper his enthusiasm over time, but clearly, Stewart was in a mood to celebrate. For once, he and Glenn Beck could have been at the same party.

I haven’t seen Stewart or Colbert that giddy, excited, and care-free in a long, long time. It was great to watch. I’d say Colberts was funnier though.

    • Larry

Wow, a Jew giddy at the killing of an Arab. Who woulda thought?

      • topoopon

And plenty of Muslims, Christians, and athiests too.

I think it had more to do with being a lifelong New Yorker, and a proud American.

I didn’t cheer for Saddam, but… this guy?? I have NO sympathy for the death of THIS GUY.

      • Liza

I saw many Muslims on TV last night celebrating as well, even here in northern ca where I live there were some Muslims out celebrating who got pelted by eggs by some Christians. I guess they felt they still needed to be taught a lesson? It’s pretty strange but even covered in egg they continued to celebrate, this is their home as well and were justified to feel happy. For the record I’m atheist and feel totally cut off from the religious aspects of this whole story. I’m just glad the world is a little bit safer now.

      • Kim

Well, Liza, that’s because you realize attacks were made on AMERICANS not a religion. People of all faiths have suffered because of Bin Laden. The Chrisitians throwing eggs at Muslims equally happy he was dead were showing ignorance and a big lack of some of the basic tennants of the Christian faith.

      • Melissa

@Liza – how do you know they were Christians? Did you ask them? Do they go to your church?

      • Oh, Kim…

There are just as many crazy Christians.

      • girl

        What a stupid remark, Larry.

    • June

By celebrating do we become that which we presume to hate?

      • teezy

        typical comment of a sociopath

      • Matt

I hate those that celebrate the death of innocents. I do not weep for Osama’s death. Pure evil.

      • @ burp

        Typical comment from an imbecile.

      • @ June

@ June that should read, but it’s obvious.

      • Belky

Only if you killed 3000 people by crashing plains into the Twin Towers, wow. What’s with all these people trying to bring guilt and shame on the good feeling this guy being snuffed out is bringing? Give me a break!

      • Bob

        Ummmm…no.

      • Ana170

I don’t feel bad for Osama but part of me wishes he’d been caught alive. I wanted him to have to face justice. His dying in a firefight feels insufficient as punishment and I can’t get excited about it.

      • Jo

Oh come on. She is entitled to her opinion. What June is saying is what Martin Luther King Jr said – no person should rejoice in the death of another person (paraphrased.) I’m glad he’s dead but I can see her point too.

  • Shelly

This is a very human response from Stewart. It is interesting to see things from a New York pundit point of view. The release of tension shown here and with Colbert are a sign of the larger reduced strain given the situation. I also appreciate that Stewart reined himself in to make the excellent point that we have new faces of the middle east to concentrate on in the youth rebelling for their freedom.

    • Tom

or maybe like a fat kid after blowing all his money on cheeseburgers finds a 20 in the parking lot, and says to himself. “We’re back!”

  • rykart

Wait until the US is attacked again.

That’ll wipe the smile from these idiots’ faces.

    • matthew

are you trying to draw a response? Because calling two tv show hosts “idiots” for rejoicing along with the rest of the United States seems like a really dumb thing to do. I mean, seriously? Are you taking Osama’s side or something? Im extremely confused by your comment.

    • Angela

      Yep that’ll show ‘em. Can’t wait. /snark

    • Steve

Is that a wish or a threat?

    • Moz

It is neither. Until the Israel/Palestine issue is resolved the violence will not end. You’re a rube if you think the middle east will suddenly become peaceful because of his death.

      • The 40 year old magpie

Has nothing to do with I/P issues. If it had, Israel would have been the recipient of major attacks. I mean major. not the US. didn’t affect policy, now did it? it did give Bush the opportunity to aid obl in the ruination of America with two wars and unregulated financial markets.

Had nothing to do with troops in Saudi Arabia. Had everything to do with “daddy look at me”. Kinda like the “Sovereigns” and “Militias”. They weren’t hugged enough. These are losers who cling to stale, pseudo-ecstacitic religious ideology, cowards who send hopeless young men to their deaths while they play Hassan-i-Sabbagh (except the don’t feed their dupes hashish and lull them with “Paradise on Earth”) and live in “caves”. you know, like that US $1mil dollar cave bin laden resided in?

These are “businessmen” like the Mafia are “businessmen” they sell protection.

      • Wes

^ LOL….Daily Show viewers are almost as dumb as Fox New viewers

    • JasonInDFW

Way to look at the dark cloud behind the silver lining. So should we ever do anything about anything since there is always something else after it?

  • rykart

Most people stopped caring whaty happens to the ppor Americans after the United States massacred 3-5 million people in Indochina through torture, napalm and high explosives. This is the country that wants to lecture the world on Bin Laden and evil?? Now THAT belongs on Comedy Central!

    • Mephysto

Uh-oh, you sound like a terrorist.. hmm, someone’s computer is about to be analyzed by homeland security.. Enjoy!

      • JasonInDFW

I should have read lower before posting my last comment. I think this message explains his desire to look forward to the next attack.

    • Dorimifah Solatido

What a lowlife turd this rykart clown is; I won’t even address him directly. Pulls a number out of his a$$ like it’s a fact, as if it makes his irrational hate-filled BS any more legitimate. Wonder if that cretin ever heard of Pol Pot, a Khmer Rouge Hitler wannabe who actually DID wipe out millions of his own countrymen in the infamous killing fields of Cambodia. This ryjart jerk should join his hero Osama in a watery grave.

      • rykart

You’re attacking Pol Pot? That’s not very patriotic, considering your government gave him millions of dollars and were quite enthusiastic about his murder spree, as he fit into our anti-Vietnam agenda.

You should read more and talk less. You obviously have no idea what you’re saying.

  • Terry Kennedy

If it looks like crap, smells like crap, it usually is crap! I cannot believe they are pulling this over the American people once again. Here we have the most wanted terrorist in the world. They say they killed him after taking almost 10 years to supposedly do this great thing, and then they immediately bury the body at sea? If you wanted to dispose of evidence that would be the place to do it! With all the people that want to see this guy actually dead, and they do this so fast? I think they are pulling something over on the American people again. You have to ask yourself…why would they rush to do this, when the people themselves want to see this guy actually dead. I am not the only one that thinks this stinks like crap….Just think about this. Someone thinks the American people are that stupid…yep, they must be to swallow this one….Where is the body…..Nobody can be this stupid to believe this…….The one thing the people need to see, and they buried him at sea, how thoughtful……

    • Skip182

Lol, you’ve gone somewhere that not even Glenn Beck was willing to go. Nice.

    • Jon

I take it you are a “Deather?” Go ask Trump if he can help you out with Bin Laden’s Long Form Death Certificate.

      • daved

        That was humorous Jon.

    • teezy

another conspiracy theorist coward led by some sociopath somewhere

    • JasonInDFW

Guess we will have to listen to this for another 40 years or so.

If bin Laden were alive, he would have a video out so fast, your head would spin. Wouldn’t you think he would want to show the US as liars?

      • Jackie

        I agree with you, Jason.

        1) If bin Laden were alive, al Qaeda would whip out a videotape proving it. However, even they have admitted that bin Laden is dead.

        2) The truth always finds its way to the ears of the people (it may take a while, but the truth always finds a way). We all know how much crap would rain down on the U.S. government if this turned out to be not true, and the U.S. government knows it too.

        3) There’s an article on CNN.com explaining why the burial at sea took place so quickly. Muslim law dictates that the burial take place within 24 hours, and they couldn’t find a country willing to accept his body and make burial preparations within the proper timeframe.

      Paranoia, the destroyer
      (Here’s to paranoia)
      Paranoia, the destroyer
      (Hey hey, here it goes)
      Paranoia, the destroyer
      (And it goes like this)

      Paranoia, the destroyer
      (And it goes like this.)

    • Marcus

Do you also believe that 9/11 was an inside job and the president is a secret muslim?

    • JSisLOST

Terry – they had to bury him at sea because that is one of the only acceptable ways to bury a muslim, and within the required time period. And no shrine. Proof? That’s what the DNA was supposed to be for.

      • Dorimifah Solatido

That’s not true, it’s not one of the only acceptable ways – it’s not even a preferred method. They buried him that way for the same reason they buried Hitler’s remains under a future parking lot – to prevent the creation of a shrine for the $kumbag$ we haven’t gotten to yet.

  • Javadude54

Are we sure that it was Osama Bin laden who was killed? Because I was watching Fox news and they said it was President Obama Bin Laden who was killed.

    • ALM

Consider the source, dude, consider the source…

    • Laura

      Ooh, good one. Original.

      • Jay

That’s what the guy really said!!

      • anotherOpinion

I saw it too, he really said that, right after the presidents speech. It’s one of those you have to see to believe, that newscaster will carry that one to his grave.

    • Ashley

BBC actually had the same thing on their news ticker “Obama DEAD.” I know it’s funnier when Fox does it, but others did it too.

      • lana

        wishful thinking?

  • Tom

People have grown up to be cynical of everything, to the point where they can’t seem to trust anything or anyone.

On another note, why is this even on an entertainment/hollywood/movies website?

    • michael budnick

I was brought up to believe in everything beyond the shadow of a doubt, and this incident is completely in the dark.

    • Eurydice

Maybe because Jon Stewart is an entertainer?

      • XXX

If he is an entertainer, he’s a very poor one.

  • tgh

“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

    • Tor

Sorry, but that’s not by MLK Jr. It’s a hoax.

      • tgh

After looking into it, it seems you’re probably right… Still, I agree with the sentiment, even if MLK Jr. didn’t say it.

      • JasonInDFW

In general, I would normally agree. But for this man, I just can’t.

“People tuning in to The Daily Show Monday night to hear Jon Stewart’s sober and objective analysis of the killing of Osama bin Laden may have been a little surprised…”

Who tunes into Stewart to watch “sober and objective analysis”?? Seriously? You’ve apparently don’t watch the Daily Show much huh? Dude is a riot and usually right on the money but sober is the last adjective I would choose to describe Jon Stewart or his show!

  • rykart

“The greatest purveyor of violence in the world : My own Government, I can not be Silent.”

..and THAT MLK quote is certainly NOT a hoax.

  • rykart

There is no question Bin Laden will remain a hero for millions of people worldwide who have suffered in silence as the US and Israel invade their countries, bomb their citizenry and spread incalculable misery. He gave up a life of wealth and privilege to fight for THEM, not you.

It is wrong that Palestinians are terrorized day and night and forced from their homes using US weapons. It is wrong that 20,000 Lebanese were massacred by Israel and the world stood by and did nothing. By all accounts from people who knew Bin Laden as a young man, these things affected him VERY deeply.

Who do WE have to represent us?? This miserable Uncle Tom, who watches as families lose their homes and responds by stuffing cash in the pockets of his rich banker friends. A man who has utterly turned his back on the vast environmental calamity consuming the globe. A man who is happy to see Bradley Manning being tortured in a cell for daring to expose the atrocities committed by Obama’s beloved military.

Ah—but his mafia-style hit was a huge success and has brought this sick and vile country together! Isn’t that nice?

    • Jay

Who let you out of your cage?

      • Bianca

Sorry to have been away for the past few hours, thus missading out on the celebration.Great tkhnas go to all involved at the sevaderal levadels. • Shaun

@rykart, I’m sure that Bin Laden will remain a hero to you. If you feel so strongly, I suggest you pick up a weapon and defend your principles. And thanks for all the blatant racism.

    • ALM

Feel free the leave this “sick and vile country” if that’s the way you feel. I’m sure we’ll all be happy to chip in for the one-way airfare. Yes, we have our faults, but I promise you, you won’t have it half as good anywhere else, and I speak from experience.

    • fish eye no miko

“He gave up a life of wealth and privilege to fight for THEM, not you”

He was living in a mansion when he was killed.. So… no, not really.

  • rykart

Racism? Hardly, Shaun. But I’ll tell you what IS racist. It’s racist to insist that people put up with having their lives destroyed by US bombs and are forbidden to retaliate for the crimes committed against them because only nice white people get to commit mass murder.

    That certainly IS racist.

    • Shaun

Who are these nice white people you refer to? Americans? Sorry, I didn’t know we were a white country. I live in a town/state/country where the mayor, the governor, and the President are black. But again, there’s your racism.

If you feel so strongly, then I again suggest that you do something about it. And whining on an EW message board is not “something”.

  • rykart

Why aren’t YOU out battling the Islamic hordes, Shaun??

You make a good point though. While America used to be the home of slavery, we are now happy to promote blacks to the highest office in the land, providing they are prepared to continue America’s extermination jamboree in the Mid east, Latin America, Indochina or wherever our next set of victims happens to be. We are indeed and equal opportunity employer of psychopaths, as we see from people like Condoleeza Rice, the pathological liar and torture enthusiast and Colin Powell, the pathological liar and fraud who made a name for himself covering up the My Lai massacre before moving on to bigger and better atrocities under the maniac George Bush.

    • geez

rykart this is what I tell my grandson when he gets overly excited, get your blanket, cuddle up and watch some sponge bob, then we can talk about it. It works every time. Try it. Unless we are in the ‘inside’ of what ever issue, or atrocity we have the fortune or misfortune to witness, we can never know the entire truths. We trust who we trust, and sometimes we trust the wrong person and/or messenger. Not sure I have a point, just thought you might need to calm down and find another forum before you hurt yourself. We are largely Stewert/Cobert fans do ya really think you are giving anyone pause?

      • rykart

        Hi geez,

Calmness is certainly a virtue..I agree. I guess spending billions of dollars chasing a cave inhabitant around the globe then throwing a giant drunken street parade worthy of the moon landing because you killed him doesn’t seem a very calm (or wise) response to me.

As to Stewart and Colbert, they really shouldn’t be mentioned together. Colbert is often brilliant and extremely funny. Stewart is a complete nobody and doesn’t seem terribly bright.

      • geez

ahhh, personally I prefer Stewart, but then I am old, my kids prefer Colbert. I have found your posts rather facinating and a similair idealogy to some friends I have who graduated from Evergreen College before it was cool.
