Filed under: Television, TV and tagged:

Raise your hand if you find yourself caught in a Friday morning haze of rage and disbelief after the unexpected elimination of Pia Toscano on last night‘s American Idol results show. (Yes, we see you, Jennifer Lopez.) Some of the remaining competitors were seemingly also struck by America sending one of the presumed frontrunners packing this early, taking to Twitter to share their reactions. READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor': Who should host?

xfactor

Clamoring as we (media…and maybe you?) all may be for information about who will host The X Factor, actual facts are scarce. We know that Simon Cowell has been vocal about his desire to have a male-female duo host the show, but the names that have been tossed around seem to be all over the place — Gossip Girl‘s Taylor Momsen, Enrique Iglesias, and former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger are among them.

Based on that celebuffet of potential hosts, I’m not exactly wowed yet. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Have YOU voted for your favorite?

Pia-Idol

The shock of Pia Toscano’s untimely exit from American Idol had barely settled in before pretty much everyone in America — everyone, even Barack Obama and Fred from YouTube — began asking themselves the same question: What?!? And: How?!?!? Also: WHAT?!?!?!? And finally: But…HOW?!?!?!?!?

Well, the answer, of course, is pretty simple: Not enough people voted for Pia. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' on the scene for Top 9 results show: The Idoldome is mad as hell

Was that Pia’s name I heard? Did America really just send home this season’s most consistently impressive singer? And where was Source Code‘s time-traveling Jake Gyllenhaal when we needed him? Yup, it was all happening, and it was all so wrong.

A number of theories will circulate. Maybe Pia appeared to be such a solid frontrunner that viewers thought she didn’t need their help. Maybe Jennifer Lopez’s positive-but-constructive critique of Pia’s “River Deep — Mountain High” performance sent the wrong message to Americans. And, most likely, maybe it’s because a significant bulk of Idol voters are teenage girls who vote again and again and again for their nonthreatening Kris Allen/Lee DeWyze crushes, thereby eliminating five female singers in a row. Of course, a simple way to even the playing field would be to limit every phone number to one vote, but then Idol couldn’t boast about receiving a gazillion votes each week. Whatever the cause of Pia’s downfall, my fellow audience members were dumbfounded and, more so than I’ve ever seen, angry. Here’s how those final minutes played out in the Idoldome. Update: Annie’s recap is live

Wednesday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night sure was fun. Everyone did fairly well. No disasters. No more dizzies! But someone’s gotta go home. Earlier today, we suggested Stefano, Jacob, and Paul would be heading to the stools of doom around 8:50 tonight. You voted — most of you picked Stefano or Jacob. My gut is telling me “Stefano,” but my gut is saying “time to eat frozen pizza and raw cookie dough” and I’m just not sure it’s a good idea to listen. Chat about the results show here, and I’ll update this post as soon as we know which of the top 9 has been eliminated. Update: READ FULL STORY »

Robert Redford has been talking about making a Jackie Robinson movie for seven years, and according to the Los Angeles Times, it’s finally in motion. Brian Helgeland (A Knight’s Tale) will write and direct, focusing on the special relationship between the Hall of Fame player who broke baseball’s color barrier and Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey, who orchestrated the historic move with both pragmatic and noble intentions. Redford, who hasn’t starred in a film since 2007′s Lions for Lambs, will play Rickey, but no one is yet attached to play Robinson, the dashing and charismatic infielder who stared down vicious bigotry when he joined the Dodgers in 1947. A few years back, there was one logical person to play Robinson: Denzel Washington. In fact, in the mid 1990s, Washington and Spike Lee nearly made a Robinson movie. It wasn’t meant to be.  READ FULL STORY »

Maybe Glenn Beck is right. Maybe this is the end of the world. According to a brand new Wall Street Journal/NBC national poll of Republican primary voters, Donald Trump actually has a shot at the GOP nomination for President. Trump tied with Fox News personality and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee for second place — they both got 17 percent — with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney coming in first, with 21 percent. Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, host of TLC’s Sarah Palin’s Alaska, placed fifth with 10 percent. READ FULL STORY »

After last night’s eventful episode of FX’s Justified (read our post-mortem chat with executive producer Graham Yost, who also teases the happenings in Harlan through the May 4 season finale), we thought it was a good time to ask which of Justified‘s many colorful supporting characters is your favorite? That means Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) and Boyd (Walton Goggins) are off the table. Anyone else is fair game, including Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman, pictured).

The bad news for Dewey fans: READ FULL STORY »
