Jennifer Lopez named 'People' magazine's Most Beautiful Person

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

What a difference a year makes: In 2010, Jennifer Lopez was making headlines for the critically reviled catsuit she wore while celebrating New Year’s, just months after she fell onstage at the American Music Awards while singing “Louboutins.” But now, thanks to her judging stint on American Idol, Lopez has reinvented herself as a media and audience darling after proving to be kind, attentive, and, yes, extremely shiny (The sequins! The eyeshadow!) on the Fox reality TV show. So, in turn, People has named the multi-hyphenate 2011′s Most Beautiful Person.

In the issue — which also includes celebrities like Mila Kunis, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Hudson, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lawrence, and The Office stars Mindy Kaling and Ellie Kemper — Lopez talks about how she survives life in front of unforgiving HD cameras. READ FULL STORY »

'Chuck' star Yvonne Strahovski parodies Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Ke$ha: Watch the video here!

If you needed further proof that Chuck‘s Yvonne Strahovski is TV’s coolest Aussie/Polish actress, look no further than this CollegeHumor clip called “Three Pop Stars, One Video” that finds Sarah Walker skewering today’s top pop divas.

Recasting herself as Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Lady Gaga, Strahovski sings about wooing a guy “no matter what manufactured image [he's] into.” Ouch! At least those three divas have millions of dollars to ease the sting of her satire.

The best line has to be Strahovski as Perry prancing around in a cupcake bra on a beach singing, “I love you with my heart everlasting/I love you with boobies whipped-cream-blasting.” Watch the slightly NSFW video here: READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Women didn't vote for Pia because they're jealous? Ridiculous!

There are so many misconceptions about women: That we’re horrible at math, that we’re always good at asking for directions, that we’ll fight to the death with a friend over a wedding date. But perhaps the misconception that irks me most of all is that we are all jealous of beautiful women.

That unbelievably sexist viewpoint is getting airtime again, thanks to American Idol judge Steven Tyler, who told reporters last week that he felt Pia Toscano was eliminated because, “Guys aren’t voting and girls are jealous.” Earlier today, Meredith Vieira and Carl Quintanilla brought the argument up again during an interview with the eliminated contestant on Today. (As much as I would love to have seen her eviscerate the theory, Pia was probably right in being polite in that medium, instead choosing to dodge the question: “You have to go out every week, give 110 percent, and be happy with your performance — that’s all you can do.”) So, though I don’t speak for all womankind, it’s time now to put this lame theory to rest. Take note: We don’t hate Pia Toscano because she’s beautiful.

'Drop Dead Diva' lands Kathy Griffin, Lance Bass, Clay Aiken: Who else needs to guest star in season 3?

Drop Dead Diva‘s third season will, perhaps, have a higher guest count than Fantasy Island. A rep for the Lifetime series, which returns in June, confirms that Kathy Griffin will guest star in episode 8 as Kim’s (Kate Levering) sister. Episode 5, the one inspired by the Mississippi teen who was denied access to her prom because of her sexual orientation, now boasts Wanda Sykes as the judge who hears the case, as well as Lance Bass, who will play a casting director attempting to get Fred (Ben Feldman) into an energy drink commercial, Clay Aiken as a witness in one of Grayson’s (Jackson Hurst) cases about a mail-order bride scam, and former Married with Children star Amanda Bearse as another judge. Previously announced guest stars include: READ FULL STORY »

How 'The Office' can make its supersized farewell to Michael Scott great

the-office

With Steve Carell leaving The Office after seven hit (and mostly hilarious) seasons, it’s only fitting that NBC send him off in style. That’s why the Peacock is saying goodbye to Michael Scott with a 50 minute episode on April 28.

That announcement is bound to evoke conflicted emotions from Dunder-Mifflin devotees: nostalgic sadness over his departure, excitement for the much-hyped season finale, as well as a touch of apprehension over yet another love-it-or-loathe-it extended Office episode.

You would think that if you love The Office, double the time would mean double the laughs, but then you think back to the dozen or so extended episodes the series has done before. Some were amazing, but a lot of them just seem far too long and difficult to swallow (that’s what she said).

So here are four suggestions for the show making the most out of Michael Scott’s 50-minute swansong:  READ FULL STORY »

'How I Met Your Mother': Does Ted actually talk to his kids about his sex life?

HIMYM

Something has always creeped me out about How I Met Your Mother. And we were confronted with it once again during last night’s somewhat stale episode. While discussing his challenging relationship with Zoey (Jennifer Morrison) — the environmental advocate who protests his big-business building plans — Ted (Josh Radnor) is seen arguing with his girlfriend while having sex.

Why is this unsettling? READ FULL STORY »

Imagine a 'Mad Men' with no Betty Draper

Is there a more polarizing figure on Mad Men than Betty Draper? (Sorry Henry, I’ll never buy her as a Francis.) Some feel deeply for her caged bird. Others only see her sharp talons and wish for Betty a painless head-on car crash into an Ossinning oak tree. The brittle woman, taught early on to resist passion, inspires nothing but. What a shock then to read in a recent interview in W magazine with January Jones — whose acting ability is a whole separate source of debate amongst Mad Men fans; is she one-note or a master of the icy vacant glare? — that there was no Betty Draper written into Matthew Weiner’s pilot script. “He had no intention of showing Don Draper’s home life,” said Jones. “I read for Peggy two times — it was between me and Elisabeth Moss, who eventually got the part. At the end of the scene, there was a casual mention that Don was married. Matt went home that night and wrote two scenes that featured Betty.”

Hey, Johnny Reb? Billy Yank? What's your favorite Civil War film?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Seven score and 10 years ago today, our forefathers began the Civil War when Confederate cannons fired upon the Union garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston’s harbor. Since the advent of the motion picture camera, filmmakers have made certain that the glorious and horrible memories of that tragic clash will not perish from our national consciousness. D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation (1915) demonstrated the power of the infant medium, portraying the Ku Klux Klan as the noble protectors of the South. Gone With the Wind (1939) was such a cultural event and unprecedented success that Scarlett O’ Hara’s idealized Tara became intertwined with our national mythology.

From time to time, the Civil War is re-waged in theaters, as different generations re-examine its causes, reconsider its lessons, and delve back into the romance and the cruel truth of war. North against South. Brother against brother. Shakespeare would’ve written his greatest plays about the American Civil War. READ FULL STORY »
