United Nations, put this afternoon’s agenda on hold: Justin Bieber’s hopes for an enlightening experience in Israel this week were all but diminished when the paparazzi allegedly intruded on the pop star’s pilgrimage. The 17-year-old “Baby” singer, who is currently out on his world tour, was visiting the holy land sites before his scheduled April 14 show in Tel Aviv, Israel. But it was clear after the pop star took to his Twitter, he was not having the trip he’d envisioned.

On April 11, Bieber tweeted that he was “in the holy land and i am grateful for that. I just want to have the same personal experience that others have here.” He had also told followers, “[I] just wish got a little more space and privacy from the paps to enjoy this time with my family.” By the following day, it seemed his tweets had fallen on deaf ears. “You would think paparazzi would have some respect in holy places. All I wanted was the chance to walk where jesus did here in isreal,” Bieber wrote from his page on April 12.

He continued to blast the paps from his Twitter: READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': What should the Top 8 sing for songs from the cinema week? What should they avoid?

Good news! As if to help the American Idol nation cope with the surprise departure of Pia Toscano last week, this week the Top 8 contestants will be singing songs from the movies (sorry, the “cinema,” as the show’s British producers often insist on calling it), which in years past has proven to be a solid night of music. In season 2, winner Ruben Studdard pulled off a surprisingly soulful “A Whole New World”; in season 3, winner Fantasia Barrino delivered what many believe is still the best Idol performance ever when she sang “Summertime”; and in season 8, winner Kris Allen took a big risk that paid off big time when he attempted the Oscar-winning-if-still-kinda-obscure “Falling Slowly.” Them’s big shoes to fill, but thankfully, we’re here to offer our always expert advice on what the Top 8 should sing, and what they should avoid. 'The Host's Leaderboard': Tom Bergeron on Classical Night, bickering judges, and a ballroom sleepover

Here they are: Tom Bergeron‘s scores for Classical Week on Dancing With the Stars. In our Week 4 chat, Tom and I discuss the risk and eventual payoff of transforming the ballroom into a symphony hall, the way the judges’ bickering has “devolved into preschool,” and the chances of an eventual DWTS pajama party (DWTSPJP).

Even though he rates the DWTSPJP’s likelihood “a snowball’s chance in hell,” Tom is clearly into the idea and particularly wants Zoolander-esque slo-mo scenes involving spray tan. Don’t we all? And if the DWTSPJP ultimately turns into an all-night telethon? “We can all just call it a career after that,” he says.

Press play on the little triangle above.
Be sure to stick around ’til the bitter end when I release a lovely and ladylike snort!

And don’t miss Tom, Kirstie, and Maks on Oprah Thursday….not liiiiiive! (Note: Check your listings — in some regions, it says this show is Friday!)

Broadway's letting the sunshine back in: 'Hair' is returning to the Great White Way

Hair

The Tribe is back: Hair’s 2009 award-winning revival is returning to the Great White Way this summer. Previews begin at New York’s St. James Theatre on July 5, with the opening night scheduled for July 13 (the show will run through September 10). This marks Hair’s third run on Broadway since its 1968 debut, when the Vietnam-era chronicle of the hippie movement shocked with its 20-second nude scene and thrilled with its chart-topping tunes. The 2009 revival at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre ran for 519 performances and snagged the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. But, if you grew up in the late 1980s like me, your fondest memories of Hair also involve when the gang from Head of the Class staged the play in a glorious two-part episode — going on with the show even when the conservative Mrs. Hartman (Elaine Stritch) threatened to fail every student involved. 'Pregnant in Heels' star Rosie Pope's iVillage blog: Best read while imagining her crazy accent

Rosie-Pope

One way to make Rosie Pope’s mommy blog on iVillage incredibly entertaining? Imagine the Bravo star reading it out loud in her curiously appealing accent. Believe me, it really makes reading about how to keep the post-baby heat in a relationship enjoyably trippy.

After the Pregnant in Heels premiere last week, I stumbled across a Tweet from Pope in which she described her accent as “southern English.” But I really couldn’t care less how you define it. I just want it — even with the slight lisp — because it’s so unique. If I had her accent, I think I’d immediately become a more interesting person — and I tend to believe I need all the help I can get in that area. READ FULL STORY »

Karina Smirnoff's 'Playboy' cover: No fringe attached!

No fringe? No problem! Ninety-nine percent of the time we see Karina, she’s nearly nude wearing feathers and sequins — how refreshing to see her nearly nude in a black mesh peekaboo negligee! Good for you, Karina. Glad you’re branching out. Here’s hoping, however, that Playboy‘s inside features some kind of Dancing nod — perhaps some some tassel pasties? Just please don’t pay homage to this costume.

Katie Couric stops by 'Today,' stays tight-lipped about her future plans

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Yesterday, Katie Couric got a little testy when Barbara Walters pushed her to reveal what she’ll be doing after she leaves the CBS Evening News. But Couric was a lot more relaxed discussing the subject today on Today — maybe because this time, her interviewer was old pal and former colleague Matt Lauer. Even so, she didn’t reveal much about what’s next, saying only that she’s “really excited about the future” and is “in the middle of figuring it out.” Couric did, however, reveal that she’d love to have a smart, syndicated show in which she covers “a whole host of subjects” like medicine and health, controversial social issues, and politics. Hmm — possibly alongside old pal and former colleague Lauer?

Watch Couric’s appearance at her old stomping grounds below. READ FULL STORY »

Ricky Gervais still loves 'The Office': How many more seasons would you like to see?

Yes, Ricky Gervais was partly joking when he told birthday boy David Letterman on The Late Show last night that he would like to see The Office stay on air forever (“Financially, I do”), but with the show’s revolving door of recurring and permanent characters, it does seem as though the series is looking forward to a long life well after star Steve Carell leaves at the end of this season. (CBS has yet to post the full interview on the site, but the awesome folks over at Vulture have posted a few choice moments from the interview here.) READ FULL STORY »

Joaquin Phoenix may head back to the big-screen as someone other than 'himself.'

Joaquin-Phoenix

Image Credit: Barry King/FilmMagic.com; Inset: Jason Merritt/FilmMagic.com

Technically, Joaquin Phoenix was playing a role while filming the 2010 mockumentary I’m Still Here: a battered-down, drug-fueled, extremely sad, fictionalized version of himself. (Interestingly, IMDB now lists his infamous appearance on David Letterman under the “actor” category.) But after audiences and critics spent almost two years wondering whether Phoenix had really burned out, A lot of people were angered by the revelation that the actor was merely playing a role, duping the public (or trying to, anyway) into thinking he really had melted down, and leading us to fear for his general well being. Why did we worry for nothing? Was the joke on us? Or was it simply one of the finest acting feats any star had ever accomplished?

So after that stunt/performance, it will be interesting to see how will audiences and critics react when Phoenix returns to the big screen as someone other than “Joaquin Phoenix”: READ FULL STORY »

'S' is for Superman (obviously), but can you guess the rest of the superhero alphabet?

Couldn’t resist reposting this shot from the hardworking fellows over at TheChive.com. Artist Fabien Gonzalez manufactured an awesome upper-case font designed to mimic the costume of the superhero whose name begins with each letter. Some are a real reach, even for comic book geeks, and a few are arguably not superheroes (Zorro, maybe Lion-O from Thundercats) but anyone who would quibble with that should be kicked out of the Super Secret Cool Club for being annoying.

“X” feels like just a tiny little bit of a cheat, with the wheelchair in shadow, but we’ll cut you some slack, Fabien. Now get to work on a villainous version, and maybe one with only sidekicks (in lowercase, naturally).

Good luck trying to identify all of the other heroes. But my fear is that if you can nail the whole thing, it’s probably the only thing you’ve nailed in a while.

Kidding!

See the whole alphabet here, and more of Gonzalez’s work over at his Flickr page.
