'American Idol': The eliminated singer is...

idol-8

Grab your popcorn: After last night’s fairly entertaining Songs from the Cinema night, we’re about to find out who is still in the running to have a happy Idol ending, and whose journey is about to be stamped with a brutal “Fin.” Based on your votes earlier today, you all think Paul McDonald, Haley Reinhart, and Jacob Lusk are headed to the bottom three. I can’t help but think that Stefano will somehow eke his way into the bottom, especially since any Idol contestant who sings a song called “The End of the Road” seems destined for elimination. Just like when poor Charles Grigsby was eliminated in season 2 after performing “You Can’t Win” from The Wiz. But perhaps he’ll make like season 5′s Elliott Yamin, who surprisingly outlasted frontrunners Chris Daughtry and Paris Bennett, even after singing “Home,” a song by Michael Bublé whose lyrics literally read, “I just want to go home.” But let’s tune in to see who is right! As we know from last week, anything can happen! Will this be another shocking elimination? What will The Most Beautiful Woman in the World think? Chat about the results show here, and check back for an update at 9 p.m. ET after a member of Idol‘s Top 8 bites the dust. Then look for Jessica Shaw’s full recap of the night’s events later tonight. 'Scream' trilogy Blu-ray giveaway

What’s your favorite scary movie? Well, if you like your scares with a side of snark, then you’re probably a Scream fan. Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven’s slasher flick was both an homage to classic slice-and-dice fare like Halloween and Friday the 13th and a terrifying thriller in its own right. The continuations that came after, Scream 2 and Scream 3, followed in the original’s footsteps — they included plenty of wry commentary about horror movie sequels even as they contributed to the franchise’s own bloody mythology. Plenty of self-aware scary movies — and Scary Movies — cropped up in the post-Scream years, but none were as fresh or as innovative as Williamson and Craven’s magnum opus.

Now the saga continues as Scream 4 enters theaters. But if you’re nostalgic for Ghostface killers past, the original trilogy is now out on Blu-ray — and EW has ten copies of the set to give away to lucky readers. The discs are courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment and will be available while supplies last.

'American Idol': will.i.am's mentorship will not be full-time, was 'just an occurrence,' says Fox

Will-I-Am-Jimmy-Idol

Bad news for those of you who found yourselves well.i.am.converted over the past couple weeks: Fox reps have told EW that Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am’s stint mentoring this season’s crop of Idols alongside Jimmy Iovine is short-lived. Though he provided some welcome color commentary over the past couple weeks, Fox claims that “it was just an occurrence,” and that will.i.am would not be a full-time mentor.

Sad, really, as it was nice to see a second opinion become available for season 10′s contestants. READ FULL STORY »

'The Office' tonight: Are you ready to start saying goodbye to Steve Carell (and hello to Will Ferrell)?

The-Office-Farrell

It’s finally here, Office fans: the beginning of the end. In tonight’s episode, “Training Day,” Michael Scott starts preparing to leave Scranton for good — and his replacement, an allergy-plagued manager named Deangelo Vickers who’s played by some guy named Will Ferrell, will arrive. The entirety of Season 7 has been leading toward this moment, so there’s just a little pressure for the show to get it right. READ FULL STORY »

Karl Pilkington to be 'An Idiot Abroad' for another season. Cue Ricky Gervais' wonderfully maniacal laughter.

James Cheadle/Science Channel

Anyone who watched the first season of Science’s (formerly the Science Channel) travel series An Idiot Abroad learned two things: Karl Pilkington hates just about everything, and he in no way wanted to do this again.

Thankfully, with his trusty pals Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant producing, there was no way that was even an option for him. The network confirms to EW that the show, which sends Pilkington — a man with very, er, unique musings on life — around the world, would be back for a second season.

During the first season of An Idiot Abroad, Pilkington didn’t quite marvel at the seven wonders of the world the way a regular television travel guide — or a regular person, for that matter — might. Though, to be fair, he wasn’t given any five-star accommodations, as per Gervais and Merchant’s evil/genius planning. Still, whether or not Pilkington liked it (he didn’t), the show went on to become the channel’s highest-rated series to date.  READ FULL STORY »

'Hey Dude' to finally get released on DVD. Now hurry up and get 'Salute Your Shorts' and 'Legends of the Hidden Temple' out there, too!

Hey-Dude

“It’s a little wild and a little strange/When you make your home down on the range/Start your horse and come along/But you can’t get a ride if you can’t hold on.” If you don’t know the rest of these lyrics to this you’d might as well stop reading (and really analyze what you were doing with your time from 1989 to 1991), but for everyone else who understands the importance of staying away from those “man eatin’ jack rabbits and that killer cacti”: Hey Dude is finally coming to DVD!

For anyone who grew up in the late ’80s and early ’90s (that had cable…or at least went to their friends’ houses who did), watching Nickelodeon shows like Hey Dude was as an important rite of passage as owning a Skip-It and ruining your parents carpet with Gak. Now, for the first time, the folks at Nick are letting us relive a piece our childhood by releasing the first season of Hey Dude on DVD. READ FULL STORY »

Movies that phone-in their goodbyes

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Everyone knows that a real phone conversation doesn’t end until each person on the line says goodbye at least three times in three different ways. Even then, there’s a chance the conversation will survive — especially if you’re my great-aunt and I haven’t properly thanked you for my annual care-package of meats and cheeses. Movies don’t have the luxury of such tediousness, as screenwriter John August points out on his blog, which features a YouTube clip with some egregious examples of abbreviated farewells. 'Justified' shoots and scores: What are favorite TV and movie shootouts?

justified

It’s safe to assume that as the season 2 finale of Justified creeps closer, the bullets will continue to fly, even if — SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t watched last night’s episode — Mags has agreed to keep the lid on the Bennett-Givens feud. Now that Mags has essentially disowned Dickie and given him the family business, he doesn’t think he needs to uphold her deal with Boyd, who’s gone full outlaw again and reteamed with Johnny to get the county back under Crowder control. Having seen next week’s episode, we can confirm there will be a body count.

What are your favorite TV and movie shootouts? While you’re thinking (Heat? Scarface? The Matrix? Open Range? Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?), let’s talk about Justified‘s latest: Early in last night’s episode, while giving Winona a ride to a meeting with divorce lawyers, Raylan got out of the car at a red light to talk to the men in the car behind them. “Hey, fellas. Uh… forgive me, I can’t tell if you guys are followin’ me or not,” he said politely, leaning into the driver’s rolled-down window. “Yeah, I’m just a little out of sorts to be honest with ya. I shot and killed a guy just three days ago. So at this intersection here, I’m gonna go right. I want you two to go left. I go right, you go left. You go right… yeah, I’m gonna want some answers. Alright? You guys have a good one.”  READ FULL STORY »

Lunchtime Poll: will.i.am.putting.it.to.a.vote

Special-to-the-season music producer extraordinaire Jimmy Iovine (right) and his new sidekick will.i.am are turning into the Statler and Waldorf of American Idol. Someone’s got to! The three actual judges can’t seem to bring themselves to say anything constructive, so it’s up to these two cranksters to do it preemptively with our top 8 young heroes. At first I was annoyed that will.i.am.still.there kept showing up, now that he apparently bunks in the Idol rehearsal studio. But after this week — I don’t mind him at all! He’s sort of funny and he enjoys listing all of the different foods that he knows, which is pretty much all I ever wanted in a human. I have a LOT of trouble typing his stupid name the way I’m guessing God did not intend, but I’m even getting over that. So let’s put it to a vote in today’s Lunchtime PollREAD FULL STORY »

Pia Toscano isn't dating Mark Ballas (wink) and we totally believe her (wink, wink)

Ah, the old “we’re just friends” song-and-dance routine. Only this time it’s with people who do actual song and dance routines. It’s so literal!

Recently booted American Idol contestant Pia Toscano stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show (the episode airs today on NBC, check local listings) to continue her “Maybe someone will please explain to me how the hell I got kicked off?!” tour, to which host and fellow former short-lived Idol resident Ellen DeGeneres had no answers, only sympathy: “You have the most beautiful voice … I hope everybody is looking at this going, ‘We got to vote for people,’ because I think that people thought you had it made.”

But, there was a far more pressing matter at hand: Is Pia dating Dancing with the Stars‘ dancing star Mark Ballas? READ FULL STORY »
