'Game of Thrones' guide: Don't know your Tullys from your Targaryens? HBO has you covered.

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

As you may have gathered by now, we here at EW are just a little excited for the premiere of Game of Thrones, HBO’s new fantasy series. The show promises to be epic in every sense of the word — and it might also seem epically confusing to those who’ve never picked up one of the massive George R. R. Martin novels on which Thrones is based. Thankfully, today HBO posted some supplementary materials that should be very useful for Thrones novices who don’t know the difference between direwolves and Daenerys, as well as those who read the books long enough ago that they’ve forgotten specific details. (And trust me, there are a lot of specific details that are easy to forget.) The network’s new viewer’s guide includes both a nifty interactive map that lays out the seven kingdoms of the realm of Westeros, as well as a guide to the many clans that populate the story. A still image of the map is below:  READ FULL STORY »

Why NBC's 'Love in the Wild' could be awesome

Today, NBC announced a June 1 premiere date for its new “adventure-dating series” Love in the Wild. The show sends 10 single men and 10 single women deep into the jungle of Costa Rica. In each episode, the couples will pair up and go on quests such as paddling down crocodile-ridden waters, navigating through bat-infested caves, and hanging 200 feet above the rain forest floor as they descend down a waterfall. The couple that wins the quest shares at the Oasis, a five-star bungalow. The rest stay in the less luxurious Cabins. “During an elimination unlike anything seen before, all of the couples will come together to reveal whether a connection has been formed with their current partner — or if they would like to switch and get to know someone else. At the end of every episode, two heartbroken singles will be sent home,” says NBC.

Now, when this press release hit EW staffers’ inbox, I was forwarded it on two separate email chains: Those of us known to still enjoy The Bachelor, and those of us known to have once enjoyed Paradise Hotel. READ FULL STORY »

Condoleezza Rice to visit '30 Rock': Is Jack Donaghy over her?

Al Gore visited 30 Rock to save the whales. Jerry Seinfeld returned to NBC to thwart Jack Donaghy’s Seinfeld-ization of the network, and Oprah was a figment of Liz Lemon’s pill-fueled hallucination. But Lemon can now expect a celebrity cameo that might have real consequences. Promoting her comic memoir, Bossypants, on the Leonard Lopate radio show, Tina Fey spilled the news, “I’m going to make an executive decision that I’m allowed to talk about this. We have Condoleezza Rice coming up in a couple of weeks.” READ FULL STORY »

Paris Hilton says new reality series will show true self: Too late?

Promoting her upcoming Oxygen reality series The World According to Paris debuting in June, Paris Hilton today revealed to reporters that she was just playing a character on The Simple Life. Shocking, we know. She also said, ”I would never have done a show like [The World According to Paris] five, ten years ago. I wasn’t really comfortable with myself,” Reuters reports. “I have been through so much. I have nothing to hide. It’s like, what else can happen? I was ready to show myself.”

Is it too late, or is the perfect time for Paris to return? In the “too late” column, you have the arguments that she’s been eclipsed by the Kardashians; that we don’t trust that we’ll see the true Paris even with an all-access pass to her friends, house, and business; and that even if we were to, would anything surprise us at this point? Arguments for this being the right time for Paris to show her true colors is that we’d all be fascinated to see how Lindsay Lohan exists, but peeking on Paris makes us feel less guilty; it would be nice to know how exactly she fills a day; and there is always the chance that we’ll see her as a real person like we did Jessica Simpson when Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica first began. That’s really the goal here, right? Let’s take it to a vote after the jump.  READ FULL STORY »

'All My Children,' 'One Life to Live': It's so hard to say goodbye...

Considering how often it’s happened in the last few years, it should be easier to accept every time we learn of another soap opera’s demise. Yet yesterday’s news that ABC will be canceling One Life to Live next year and All My Children in September was a blow to folks who hadn’t even watched in years. It was a double whammy hit in the continued chipping away at daytime. Hard to stomach, especially when many of us grew up with OLTL and AMC. These fictional families felt as if they were our own.

Television couldn’t have asked for a better way to lure me in than through soap operas.  No other type of show offered such escapism. Some of my earliest memories after coming to America from the West Indies was of the soaps that my then-babysitter watched religiously. READ FULL STORY »

Happy Record Store Day! Do you remember your first album purchase?

To the current generation of pop-music consumers, Record Store Day, which is tomorrow, might seem as relevant as Buggy Whip Day. But once upon a time, boys and girls, people purchased their music in an actual store — you would pay the owner greenbacks and walk out with either a CD, or a cassette, or an album. These were physical objects that could be held in your hands. The covers on the ancient albums were sometimes art in themselves, and the liner notes could be perused for hours and hours.

Record stores themselves each had their own singular vibe, and the best ones would let you listen to any album in the store before purchase. If you knew the secret handshake, the guy in the back might even have pointed you to some quality bootlegs from the latest Metallica concert.

This must seem very antiquated, and rather quaint, but there was something about walking out of a record store with the music in your hand. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Was Casey and Haley's 'Moanin' the best performance the season?

Considering the many missteps both Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart have taken throughout the season (see: Casey’s off-putting “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Haley’s wobbly “Blue“), it was quite a delight to see the contestants duet to the jazzy “Moanin’” during last night’s results show. Look at them! Both were in tune! Passionate! Fun! The performance demonstrated just how much stress factors into the competition: solo, Casey and Haley have the tendency to veer off-key, wander aimlessly on stage, and far too often rely on old tricks (which, for both, incidentally, is the angry growl). Together, during a no-consequences-attached performance, they knew exactly what to deliver: A well-plotted performance that truly showcased their smooth vocals and spoke to their undeniable, ahem, chemistry. (And, considering the song title, the angry growls actually made sense.) So, I ask you, PopWatchers: Was “Moanin’” the best performance of the season? (I’ll put it in second place in my book, below Casey’s undeniably gorgeous “Georgia On My Mind.”) Dare I say “Moanin’” even topped Idol‘s previous best duet of all time, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta’s “Slow Ride”? (Ducks and covers.) Watch both performances after the jump and let me know what you think. READ FULL STORY »

Am I the only one who got a little nervous reading the detailed schedule for the Royal Wedding posted on the official site? Can you imagine American celebrities announcing what time they will leave and arrive, which entrance will be used, and where the bride will be staying the night before the ceremony? I understand this is an internationally televised wedding on an entirely different scale, but I still find it fascinating (and optimistic). Below is the schedule, copied and pasted with local times. The marriage service will being at 6 a.m. ET, the carriage procession of the bride and bridegroom with a Captain’s Escort of the Household Cavalry at 7:15 a.m. ET, the Buckingham Palace balcony photo op at 8:25 a.m. ET, and the “fly past” by the Royal Air Force and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at 8:30 a.m. ET.  READ FULL STORY »

Will Ferrell speaking Spanish? Daniel Radcliffe in a suit? Taylor Lautner not showing his abs? Daniel Craig) in a cowboy hat in a new look at Cowboys & Aliens; Will Ferrell jamón-ing it up in the telenovela spoof Casa de mi Padre; Twilight star Taylor Lautner on the run in abduction; Harry Potter‘s own Daniel Radcliffe getting spooked in the horror pic The Woman in Black; and much, much, more.
