Shout it from the Capitol, Hunger Games fans, because here’s some casting news we can all get behind. (Caution, for non-HG fanatics, some SPOILERS ahead.) When EW exclusively announced today that Lionsgate had cast its District 11 members Thresh and Rue with Hollywood newcomers Dayo Okeniyi and Amandla Stenberg, respectively, the consensus amongst fans was that of both delight and relief. Here are two actors that not only closely resemble how they were described in Suzanne Collins’ dystopian novels, but ones that also aren’t bringing any extra baggage into the arena.

'The Killing' Clue Tracker: We've solved the Rosie Larsen murder mystery! (We think.)

HBO’s new fantasy saga Games of Thrones has been praised for being a grim and gritty politically charged allegory about power-mongering scoundrels living in a verdant if climatically dreary land. It’s a good show – but I prefer to spend my Sunday evenings watching AMC’s The Killing, which tackles similar themes, but in a more real-world if similarly weather-challenged setting… a setting that just happens to be my hometown of Seattle, where wintry (rain) is always coming. I am also a sucker for murky murder mysteries about pale, haggard-looking people with guns and umbrellas – at least, more so than frisky, frothy fantasies about pale, haggard-looking people with broadswords and fur coats. But that’s just me. Beginning this week, I’ll be making like Gil Grissom and sifting through the clues of The Killing in hopes of solving the TV season’s most riveting mystery: Who killed Rosie Larsen? (Yes, I’m playing fair: I have only seen the episodes you’ve seen.)

Glenn Beck will do it his way, but not in New York, New York

glenn_beck

Where in the world is Glenn Beck? On Saturday, the answer was Albany, where he told a live audience that his future plans did not include New York City. He’s sold his Connecticut home and intends to build a new media empire that will “deliver news directly to the youth of America,” according to WireReport.com. “I’m going to make sure that Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart don’t occupy the space of comedy alone.” Though Beck seems intent on starting fresh in a new metropolis, a source with knowledge of the situation says that Beck’s Mercury Radio Arts and its 50 employees will remain in New York. Still, that probably won’t prevent Jon Stewart from gleefully bidding Beck adieu, as he once did for Rush Limbaugh. READ FULL STORY »

Conan O'Brien turns 48. Happy Birthday, dear Coco!

Sorry Suri Cruise, but there’s only room for one celebrity birthday in our hearts today. (Plus, you’re only five years old, and you have a better wardrobe than us. We are bitter.) For April 18th is known solely around PopWatch HQ as Conan O’Brien’s birthday. Yes, 48 years ago today (in the year nineteen sixty three… In the year nineteen sixty threee-eeeeeee), our future, fearless Team Coco leader was born, with a life of late night television battles, self-pleasuring bears, and Walker, Texas Ranger levers still ahead of him. While the unstoppable ginger force will be working on his birthday – Scream 4 actress Emma Roberts is stopping by and hopefully so will his, er, TBS boss Ted Turner — we’d still like to imagine he had a lovely, low-key celebration this weekend, mostly one in which he went apple-picking with Mr. T.

In honor of the Flaming C’s special day, here’s a clip of him doing what he does best, kicking ass. (We were going to bake him a cake, but finding orange icing is way harder than you’d think.) READ FULL STORY »

Great news, Friday Night Lights fans: NBC is going to be auctioning off props from the show — things like coach’s sunglasses and Tim Riggins’ farm coat. But there’s one decision that’s sure to raise at least an internal debate while casting your bids: Would you rather own Panther or Lion gear? READ FULL STORY »

'Scream 4' gutted by 'Rio' at box office. Why didn't you see the slasher sequel?

Going to an afternoon screening of Scream 4 was a perfectly lovely way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon in New York. (As lovely as it can be watching handfuls of teenagers get their throats slashed.) I was, however, surprised to see quite a few empty seats at my local theater, which is typically so crowded, seats are packed weeks after a film’s release. (Even two months after Black Swan premiered in theaters, I had to wait in line for an hour in order to grab a seat.) Did theater-goers not realize that Scream 4 was a much-anticipated sequel? With built-in Courteney Cox-David Arquette tabloid fodder? And a healthy dose of ’90s nostalgia (which, if we’ve learned anything from NKOTBSB, is back in vogue)?

Apparently, springtime had moviegoers craving chirping birds over homicidal maniacs. Rio flew to the top of the box office, nabbing $40 million its first weekend (the best opening of 2011). READ FULL STORY »

Nicolas Cage's arrest not his first New Orleans spectacle, writes 'GQ' editor

Cage

So Nicolas Cage was arrested over the weekend in New Orleans, charged with domestic abuse and disturbing the peace. Dog the Bounty Hunter reportedly bailed him out. (Of course!) It’s a strange, sad story (if true), made only stranger and sadder by the most recent Editor’s Letter in the May issue of GQ. Jim Nelson had a recent close encounter with Cage at a swanky Big Easy restaurant during Mardi Gras, and the surreal, comitragic picture was “as if he were performing Leaving Las Vegas: The Musical for some perverse dinner theater.”

“He moved, stumbled, came closer to our tables.
‘Where’s the REAL girls?’ he moaned.
Huh? A few more paces. He’s a foot away from my andouille sausage. Quick. Someone feed him.

'Game of Thrones': Feminist or not?

HBO’s much-hyped swordsy fantasy epic Game of Thrones packed loads of stuff into its premiere episode Sunday: severed bodies, decapitations, bastards, sex, dwarves, sex, dire wolves, incest, and more sex. But it’s a matter of some debate whether strong female characters are part of the Game plan. There’s no doubt that among the seemingly infinite cast there are women — and memorable ones, at that. The question is whether they’re an endless parade of misery and victimhood or inspiring figures who triumph in a very masculinized fictional world where no one even thinks of giving the titular headwear to a chick.

I come down on the latter side, though I found myself in the curious position of arguing that this geekboy fantasy fest was, in fact, quite feminist with EW’s own Doc Jensen, who thought the pilot was misogynistic. Granted, I have the context of having read the entire book on which the first season is based, and having watched the first six episodes. But I certainly see where he was coming from when he asked in an email, “Do the women get to do anything more than be miserable or sex objects (willing, paid, or raped) for the men?” READ FULL STORY »

'Hangover II' monkey never lit up, says Todd Phillips

Tagged:
hangover-2-monkey

Though I hate to admit it, there’s something funny about a monkey who smokes. (Don’t blame me! Blame The Simpsons!) So I don’t fault director Todd Phillips for telling journalists that the monkey in The Hangover Part II, who’s shown smoking smoking cigarettes and snorting cocaine, had become hooked on the cigarettes. After reading some bizarre headlines, however, Phillips felt obliged to clear the air, telling Movieline:

“This was a joke. I make comedies. If you read the story, it doesn’t even make sense. “On the set of her new film, she won’t stop smoking cigarettes.” Umm. Really? Maybe just take them away from her. Or at least take her money away so she can’t buy them any longer. READ FULL STORY »
