'Glee' countdown: Out with Gwyneth, in with Charice?

Praise Grilled Cheezus or say it ain’t so? In tonight’s first new Glee after an agonizingly long hiatus, Gwyneth is making her last appearance of the season as Mr. Schu’s on-again-off-again flame Holly Holliday. But she’s not going out quietly: In a move that the American Idol judges would no doubt call risky, Gwynnie’s taking on iron-lunged Adele’s power ballad “Turning Tables.” While the acting-singing double-threat doesn’t quite match Adele’s power (but really, who can?), it sounds like Gwyneth put a softer spin on the song and pulled out another hit. How do you think her cover stacks up to the original?

Returning to McKinley is Charice as Rachel’s rival in divadom, Sunshine Corazon. After defecting to Vocal Adrenaline earlier in the season, Sunshine’s back to lend her atomic vocals to help New Directions get to Nationals… but are her intentions pure, or does she have payback on the mind? Who's voting for Michael Vick as the 'Madden NFL12' coverboy? Can you say jinx?

For this year’s edition of its billion-dollar football video franchise, Electronic Arts teamed up with ESPN to let fans vote on which stud athlete would grace the cover of Madden NFL12. Thirty-two stars were slotted in a tournament bracket, and the contest is now down to two finalists: Peyton Hillis and Michael Vick. Meaning that this year’s coverboy will be either a convicted dog-abuser, or a relatively unsung player you wouldn’t recognize even as he ran you over on his way to the endzone. Though I’m sure the Madden folks believe that their product would sell even with O.J. Simpson on the cover, I’m guessing Vick and Hillis weren’t their top choices to be the face of their game.

It’s tempting to see Vick’s impressive showing as a sign that he’s finally moved past the illegal dog fighting and horrible treatment of animals that landed him in prison for 19 months, but Hillis’ candidacy indicates that the cover vote isn’t exactly a pure popularity contest. (The last two Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, Drew Brees and Aaron Rogers, have been eliminated.) READ FULL STORY »

What movies or TV shows do you watch at work?

After reports of air traffic controllers falling asleep on the job, it shouldn’t come as much a surprise to hear that another member of that illustrious trade was caught slacking off. This Sunday, an air traffic controller near Cleveland, Ohio was found out to be watching a movie after he accidentally broadcast three minutes of Cleaner, starring Samuel L. Jackson, to every plane in the airspace he was supposed to be monitoring.

Now, the fact that he was kicking back and watching a DVD isn’t what raised my eyebrows. I just can’t get over the idea that this movie about Jackson cleaning up after crime scenes — which has a 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes — is apparently so entertaining this guy couldn’t be bothered to make sure airplanes weren’t about to fly into each other.

But criticism aside, it brings up an interesting question: How often do YOU watch movies or TV shows at work? And what kind of shows gel best with the workplace environment? READ FULL STORY »

Sofia Vergara's Diet Pepsi commercial: One major flaw

Have you seen the new Diet Pepsi commercial starring Sofia Vergara in a swimsuit? Got your attention now! Watch it below. She’s on a beach and thirsty. There’s a long line at the drink stand, so she tweets that she’s at the pier… and just saw David Beckham! Everyone in line follows her on Twitter and goes running (just go with it), totally missing the magnificent view of her walking from behind (her wrap is sheer). She returns to her spot, thirst quenched, and the kicker: David Beckham retrieves a soccer ball that has rolled near her and asks, “What’s going on over there?” That’s when she gets the look on her face pictured. I had a similar one on mine watching the ad: Why isn’t David Beckham shirtless? He’s on a beach. Playing soccer. It’s not gratuitous. Was it his tattoos?

Seth Meyers fills in for Regis: Why the political rabble-rouser would make a great permanent replacement

With Regis Philbin retiring after more than 25 years of Live! With Regis & [Blonde whose name begins with the letter ‘K’] sometime this fall, it’s about time to start vetting candidates to replace the TV host who has logged more hours in front of the camera than any other human. It’s a tough spot to fill (even though we’ve offered plenty of ideas), but if his guest turn on the show Monday was any indication, Saturday Night Live head writer and Weekend Update host Seth Meyers could be a perfect replacement.

On yesterday’s Live! With Regis & Kelly, Meyers took to the show’s casual charm as naturally as Regis takes to banking commercials. That might be hard to imagine given that anyone who even occasionally tunes into the current Weekend Update knows that Meyers doesn’t try to hide his liberal-leaning political barbs, which make up a good portion of his jokes. But in the 15-minute dialogue that opened the show, Meyers proved just as comfortable and funny trading stories with Kelly Ripa about their weekend activities and commenting on the kind of near-disaster-with-a-miraculous-ending news stories daytime TV feeds on. NBCUniversal will re-brand Versus. What would you rename the sports channel?

It was an unfortunate name from the beginning. For a cable station. For a Pearl Jam album. For anything. Versus. Versus what? Of course, Versus may have seemed like an upgrade when the Outside Life Network re-branded itself in 2006. But at least you knew what OLN was: a network about Outside Life. Versus, on the other hand, could be anything. Is it a 24-hour poetry station? Fortunately not. READ FULL STORY »

'How I Met Your Mother': Are daddy issues the co-star of season 6? Do you like it?

I was extremely vocal about my renewed love for How I Met Your Mother after they killed Marshall’s father earlier this season. (That sounds awful, I know.) But the sudden heartbreaking loss was such a massive punch to the gut that the show was forced to take a breath of fresh air in the episodes following, and it turned out to be the exact reboot the characters and their respective journeys needed.

With only a few episodes left until the finale, however, I’m feeling a little fatigue on the whole daddy issues thing. Marshall’s emotional repercussions were understandable — it was his father that kicked the bucket, after all. And it was also understandable that Barney would stop and re-evaluate his relationship with his father, Jerry, in light of the tragedy. But last night’s episode, “Hopeless,” which found the gang taking Barney’s dad, Jerry, out for a wild night on the town in attempt to find his lost inner party animal, almost put me over my threshold for dad-centric storylines.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved John Lithgow’s fantastic two-episode run as Jerry. READ FULL STORY »

Donald Trump on 'Good Morning America': I'll release tax returns when Obama releases a birth certificate

Things got heated when Donald Trump appeared on Good Morning America today to talk about his much-discussed (but still unconfirmed) potential presidential run. In brief: George Stephanopoulos lobbed the first blow, telling Trump that Republican bigwigs like Karl Rove have called the mogul a “flawed messenger for the party” and “a joke candidate,” especially since he continues to question President Obama’s citizenship. Trump replied by spouting off familiar talking points, claiming that Obama “doesn’t have a birth certificate, or he hasn’t provided it.”

The two men then argued back and forth about that statement. Trump even told Stephanopoulos that the correspondent had been “co-opted” by the President and his “minions” before professing that the birther issue is “not a big focus of my campaign.” Kind of hard to believe, since he brought it up again later in the interview, after Stephanopoulos asked if the maybe-candidate would be releasing his tax returns: “Maybe I’ll do the tax returns when Obama does his birth certificate,” Trump replied. See the interview highlights for yourself below. READ FULL STORY »

Funny or Die's Adam McKay launches protest song website

Writer-director Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) is no stranger to politics (witness his co-scripting of the Will Ferrell Broadway show, You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George W. Bush) nor music (witness the jazz-flute stylings of Mr. Ron Burgundy). Now, the Funny Or Die honcho has combined these two interests in a website called Public Domain Protest Song, which launched today and will act as a showcase for newly penned protest songs that “aren’t owned by anyone.” READ FULL STORY »

'DWTS': Is this the best Maks has ever looked?

Monday’s “America Night” on Dancing With the Stars was pretty tough to watch. I don’t care if it was the evening’s high score, a rumba to a cover of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” is ridiculous. That said, I believe the theme night will go down in DWTS history for something else — being the best Maks Chmerkovskiy has ever looked. Watch his temporary American flag torso tattoo perform a foxtrot to a cover of Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman” below. If I had been drinking, I would have catcalled the TV. (Sober, I still spent time wondering whether the men on our U.S. swim team could sport a similar tattoo or if it would slow them down. Thoughts?)

Also below, you’ll find the screengrab EW’s Fringe Fairy Annie Barrett made for you to tile on your desktop.  READ FULL STORY »
