Royal Wedding flower girl Grace Van Cutsem is not having it, you guys

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the amazing dress, the pomp and circumstance, the enormous circular cake. Sorry, but the Royal Wedding was all about seriously unimpressed flower girl Grace Van Cutsem, who upstaged the entire thing with a photo-ready pout. (Sorry, Posh, Grace’s was better.) Seriously, she’s already got her own tumblr! If looks could kill, there would have been scads of British goners today.

'The Office' gives Michael Scott one more 'That's what she said,' and it makes us feel so good inside

Steve-Carrell-Office

Like so many of you, I still have mixed feelings about Steve Carell’s last episode of The Office. While there were so many Michael Scott moments that were touching (his goodbyes with Jim and Erin, his letter of recommendation for Dwight) and funny (his worries that his improv credits wouldn’t transfer to Colorado) in last night’s episode, it still felt like there needed to be more. This is the end of an era, after all.

I will, however, give major kudos to those last few minutes with Michael. It was emotional without being sappy (thank goodness Pam got to see him off) and even gave a wonderful nod to the series as a whole when Michael asked the camera crew if they were ever going to air their footage. But, the best thing the Office writers could have possibly done was give Michael Scott a perfect parting line, which they did: the eternal “That’s what she said.” READ FULL STORY »

'Fast Five,' 'Prom,' 'Dylan Dog: Dead of Night': What will you see this weekend?

Before you answer this week’s box office poll, please remember: Nobody is judging you. PopWatch is your friend, and friends don’t do that. We don’t care if you secretly bought your own corsage in anticipation of Disney’s Prom. Or if you’re renting a souped up muscle car to drive yourself to the mall to see Fast Five. Or if you are one of the six people in North America who has actually read a Dylan Dog comic and can’t wait for the big-screen version. You might even be dropping breadcrumbs right now on your way to see Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, in which case you should stop doing that because there’s probably a trail of rats following you. It’s all ok. You were born this way; you’re a firework; you R who U R.  All we ask is that you embrace your own inner movie geek, of whatever stripe, and then let us know your pick in the poll below! This Week on Stage: Jim Parsons in 'The Normal Heart,' Ben Stiller in 'The House of Blue Leaves'

The final week of Tony eligibility brought with it five major openings, four big-named Broadway debuts, and one major misfire. Our critics saw them all — read below for the highlights. (And don’t forget to return to PopWatch on Tuesday, May 3, following the Tony nominations, for our on-the-scene commentary and reactions.)

The Normal Heart: Larry Kramer’s 1985 drama about the early years of the AIDS crisis is emotional but imperfect, according to EW stage editor Thom Geier. He gives the revival a B+, and praises lead Joe Mantello and the strong supporting cast — including Lee Pace, Jim Parsons, and Ellen Barkin in their Broadway debuts — but adds, “there is too much speechifying by characters who are too easily interchangeable.” READ FULL STORY »

America's secret Vin Diesel obsession revealed: 'Fast Five' is year's top advance ticket-seller

A movie called Fast Five is going to make a lot of money this weekend. We don’t know exactly how much, although EW’s Keith Staskiewicz has stared into the box office crystal ball and proclaimed that the number will be $70 million. That might actually be a low-ball prediction — according to a press release from Fandango, Fast Five is the top advance ticket-seller of 2011 so far, taking up 74 percent of the ticket website’s daily sales. Admittedly, the year so far has been mostly split between superheroes no one likes, cartoon animals no one likes, that one movie where every hot chick on earth fell in love with Adam Sandler, and something called I Am Number Four. But that’s even more a testament to the surprising appeal of the Fast & Furious franchise — it’s on track to be the first major hit of the year. Expect a monstrous box office take for the fifth film, followed almost certainly by an announcement of the release date of Fast Six. Hey, laugh all you want, but at least the cars in Fast Five don’t talk or transform into giant space robots.

What will Kathy and Joan say about the Royal Wedding hats?

Princess-Beatrice-hat

I’m setting my DVR to record tonight’s Kathy Griffin Royal Wedding special (TV Guide, 8 p.m. ET) and Royal Wedding edition of Joan Rivers’ Fashion Police (E!, 10 p.m. ET) specifically to see what they have to say about the hats. Poor Princess Beatrice, pictured. I think the world agreed that her hat was the worst. “Princess Beatrice’s ridiculous Royal Wedding hat” already has a Facebook page and more than 16,000 fans.

Those hats were the only reason to tune in for the hours of arrivals — other than to hear Piers Morgan discuss who has a cocaine problem. READ FULL STORY »

HBO GO app is a-go at App Store and Android Market

Just how cool would it be to get HBO on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device? You’re about to find out. The much-anticipated HBO GO app has just landed in Apple’s App Store and the Android Market. If you’re an HBO subscriber and have an iOS or Android device, then you can download the app for free and get started. (The big exceptions so far are people on Time Warner Cable or Cablevision, which were not available at launch. HBO says 80 percent of subscribers currently have access.) The initial offerings are enticing, with about 200 movies, including titles like Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Date Night, and HBO’s own Cinema Verite. The TV offerings are even more impressive, with current shows like Game of Thrones and True Blood, and complete episode collections of older favorites like The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Six Feet Under. Can the app also give us more hours in the day to devour it all?

Kristen Wiig is amongst 'top three or four' 'Saturday Night Live' performers, says Lorne Michaels. Do you agree?

As any true blue fan of Saturday Night Live can tell you, over the past decade, it’s been all about the ladies. From Tina Fey to Maya Rudolph to Amy Poehler, the women of SNL all but dominated the laughs on the long-running series. Since creator Lorne Michaels knows what does — and doesn’t — work on his own show, it was probably no fluke that he brought Kristen Wiig on board in late 2005 to keep the funny gal momentum going. It’s also no fluke that Wiig soon led most of the show’s sketches, as it turns out her boss is a really big fan of her work.

In an Wiig-centric article in the New York Times, Michaels made a bold statement about the Bridesmaids comedienne, placing her among the “top three or four” performers ever to star on the show. That’s right: Top thee or four SNL stars of all-time. I’m personally a huge Wiig fan (Gilly doesn’t even bother me… that much) and have never quite understood the relentless backlash against her. (After all, do Fred Armisen and Kenan Thompson — two players that are utilized almost as much as Wiig — get the same amount of flak from viewers?) If nothing else, she’s a team player who commits to every single sketch she’s in. Come on, admit it: It takes a special kind of lady to do this on national television.

I can’t help but wonder, also, who else appears on Michaels’ shortlist (though it’s a safe assumption Fey is at the very top). READ FULL STORY »

Royal wedding cake is round... frustrating those who think the corners taste best

Royal-cake

Let them eat cake! Or something. William and Kate are enjoying two royal wedding cakes today: this eight-tiered delight topped by their new royal cipher; and a chocolate-cookie cake specially requested by the groom. Am I disqualified from discussing the Joseph Lambeth cake technique and the 900 floral touches because I can’t look at the cake and not wonder what The Office‘s Deangelo Vickers would do if he got within an arm’s length of it. Yes? Good. “Why did I just do that? It’s not even that good! I had cake for lunch!… No!” READ FULL STORY »

Kate Middleton: Ten lessons she can learn from pop culture's most famous princesses

The Royal Wedding is over. Plucky upper-middle-class everygal Kate Middleton has been magically transformed by her big-hatted fairy godmother, the Archbishop of Canterbury, into Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, wife of the future King of England, and someone who will spend the next several decades known widely (if not entirely accurately) as “Princess Kate.” Princess-ing is a hard job, though, so here are ten important lessons the new arrival can learn from ten beloved pop culture princesses.

Princess Ariel of Atlantica: Don’t be afraid to pursue impossible dreams, such as feeding the world’s hungry children or transforming a fish-tail into a pair of human legs.

Princess Fiona of Far Far Away: A good marriage is built on compromises, like sharing the remote control or transforming into a big green ogre. READ FULL STORY »
