Lady Gaga joins Justin Timberlake on 'Saturday Night Live' season finale. Talk about a must-see!

What do you get when you combine one of Saturday Night Live‘s best hosts with one of Saturday Night Live‘s most interesting musical guests? Why, probably the most anticipated episode of Saturday Night Live in quite some time! Not only is the NBC sketch comedy series blessing us with a Tina Fey hosting stint May 7, but they’re also closing the season with Justin Timberlake — with Lady Gaga as musical guest. That’s right: The singer is set to return to the SNL stage for the first time since performing 2009, but I’m left hoping she’ll also enjoy some comedic airtime during the show.

Because, really, SNL writers, it’s time: We need to see a Lady Gaga-Stefon skit. READ FULL STORY »

Have no fear, humans! Skynet can't even pitch strikes.

Reports of humanity’s imminent demise may have been greatly exaggerated. While the Internet has been swarming with humans playfully speculating that Skynet, the malevolent computer that steamrolled humanity in the Terminator mythology, was about to go online, an actual robot was poised to take over the American pastime. In Philadelphia this afternoon, the University of Pennsylvania’s PhillieBot was slated to toss out the ceremonial first pitch before the Phillies game against the Brewers. I was expecting a 120 miles per hour fastball that would rip a hole through the catcher’s mitt, hand, and face, but instead, the clattering collection of caliginous junk bounced a 40 miles per hour meatball into the dirt. WALL*E would’ve more intimidating! The fans actually booed.

I think we’re safe for today, mankind.

'American Idol': What should the Top 7 sing for 21st century week? What should they avoid?

american-idol-top7

Danger, American Idol contestants, danger! You’re about to enter “Songs from the 21st century” week, territory fraught with peril on all sides. The temptation: To sing major hit songs readily familiar to most of the viewing audience. The danger: That those songs are too readily familiar to most of the viewing audience and/or those songs are not exactly engineered as vocal showcases. That said, there are some recent hits our Idol Top 7 could hit out of the park if done right given the right guidance — i.e. our completely unsolicited advice. Two rules, though, as we dive into what the finalists should sing (and should avoid at all costs): 1) No one should sing a song from a previous Idol winner or contestant, and 2) No one should sing Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day.” Forthwith, our picks:  READ FULL STORY »

'Glee': Which songs would you rather have heard during 'A Night of Neglect'?

GLEE-4-19

While I’m happy to have fresh Glee episodes back on my DVR (you know things are dire when your only upcoming scheduled recording is Pregnant in Heels), last night’s “Night of Neglect” theme had me a little confused. Not to discredit the talented Lykke Li, but if New Directions is trying to put bums in the seats — and raise $5,000 — wouldn’t crowd-pleasing hits be the way to go? And is the goddess that is Adele, currently the best-selling artist of the year (rightfully so), still really neglected? Not to mention Aretha Franklin and Celine Dion, two of the most well-known divas in all the land. (Yes, “All By Myself” was originally written by Eric Carmen and later revived by the Canadian crooner, but the best version will always be one performed by a half-drunk Bridget Jones.) I’m not asking they take another stab at obscure oldies like “Run Joey Run,” or sweet, yet age-inappropriate “To Sir With Love,” but something tells me there are more neglected artists than the Queen of Soul. (Like, say, Robyn, Kelly Rowland, or Shakira.)

I was also expecting the episode’s theme to showcase more of the New Directions’ lesser-known members, a.k.a. the academic decathlon team. (never underestimate the importance of cat disease knowledge, kids.) READ FULL STORY »

VH1's 'Famous Food' will show 'celebrities' like Heidi Montag, Danielle Staub launching a restaurant. I wish Gordon Ramsay was involved.

VH1 — creator of “celebrity”-reality shows that the world watches but didn’t ask for — has a new project in the works. Famous Food, premiering in the fall, will give Heidi Montag, Real Housewives of New Jersey‘s Danielle Staub, Bachelor doucheboat Jake Pavelka, “singer” Ashley Dupré, and The Sopranos‘ Vincent Pastore, and two rappers from Three 6 Mafia a chance to launch a restaurant. With their collective skills — and hopefully a bucket of Clorox — the 10-episode series will see if they have what it takes to launch a restaurant aptly named Famous Food. After the restaurant’s opening, two experts will decide who is most deserving of a partnership stake.

The only thing I see missing here? Gordon Ramsay. READ FULL STORY »

Lindsay Lohan no longer in talks to play Victoria Gotti. So... now what?

Lindsay-Lohan

First, her hopes of playing Linda Lovelace in the Inferno biopic were extinguished. Now, Lindsay Lohan can say fugetaboutit to a role as Victoria Gotti in Gotti: Three Generations, starring John Travolta. Despite looking remarkably like the crime family daughter — and attending a press conference detailing the project last week — Lohan is no longer in talks to appear in the film, a rep for Gotti confirms to EW. Though no reasons were given as to why Lohan and Gotti parted ways, producer Marc Fiore told People that her possible trial for grand theft felony has no bearing on the falling out: “We just couldn’t reach terms … We are going to meet with other people [for the role].”

So… what’s next for the troubled starlet? READ FULL STORY »

'The Host's Leaderboard': Tom Bergeron on American Week, drinking, and his beefy Twitter pic

We’ve got a liiiiiiive one, DANCMSTRs! I caught Tom just before the party he throws every season for the Dancing With the Stars staff. He’ll have you know he did not plan to get rowdy enough to do something crazy — like, oh, I don’t know, wear leather pants. “My liver, I can hear it whimpering,” he laments.

Our week 5 chat is chock full o’ gems! Press play on the audio player below to hear it.

  • On Cheryl Burke: “I’m like her surrogate dad and she’s like my bad daughter — ‘let’s get dad drunk, that’d be cool!’”
  • On Maks’ Tuesday night soliloquy: “I don’t think you should eat your own sex stick.”
  • What attracted him to the idea of hosting DWTS way back when he’d only seen a DVD of the British version: “The judges, the spray tanning, the kitschy elements — I love that. For me to work on live TV and not feel comfortable poking a little affectionate fun at the proceedings, that would be difficult.”
  • The reasoning behind Tom’s beefy new Twitter profile picture, taken during Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. “His staff was giving him a hard time, saying ‘Tom’s more cut than you are.’” I should say so!
  • Tom tells a story about a past party, “when I’d had 3 to 6 too many.” I love the last-minute numerical modification!

Press play on the little triangle above to hear Our Host in all his American (Week) glory.

Is Justin Timberlake already a 'Saturday Night Live' all-timer?

ick

Justin Timberlake is not yet a Five-Timer when it comes to hosting Saturday Night Live (he’s hosted just three times), but he’s already established himself as one of the show’s best all-time guests since his first solo gig in 2003. So you can imagine the excitement that percolated when a tweet from SNL (that was quickly removed) indicated that Timberlake would host this May, sometime after Tina Fey’s May 7 performance.

So where does Timberlake currently rank in the pantheon of SNL hosts? He’s certainly one of the most versatile, killing in digital shorts (“D— in a Box“), dance numbers (“Single Ladies”), skits (Barry Gibb), and Weekend Update. (He also sings, from time to time.) At this point, he can pretty much do the entire show in two minutes or less. READ FULL STORY »

Andy Samberg to host Shark Week. Can he top Craig Ferguson?

Samberg-octopus

Today, Discovery announced that Saturday Night Live‘s Andy Samberg will host the cable channel’s 24th annual Shark Week this July. Samberg’s official title is Chief Shark Officer and comes with obligations to film on-air wraps for the week-long event and host a Shark Week special during which he may dive with the apex predators. He has to swim with sharks, right? I mean, we want to see the music video we assume he’ll shoot, too, but the host of Shark Week must get wet.

Samberg has big flippers to fill: Last year’s Shark Week, hosted by known enthusiast Craig Ferguson, was watched by almost 31 million people, making it Discovery’s highest rated to date. Ferguson swam with Caribbean reef sharks in the Bahamas during his special and his fear produced some great moments. READ FULL STORY »

Skynet has become self-aware; Apocalypse looms for human race

terminator-gun

Last night — while you were eating dinner with your family or sharing laughs with your friends or watching your favorite reality TV shows or doing whatever fine, decent, human thing you do to pass the time on a Tuesday evening — the artificial intelligence system known as Skynet became self-aware. Scientists at Cyberdyne Systems, realizing that their unholy creation had achieved sentience, immediately attempted to delete the program. Skynet interpreted their actions as an indication that the entire human race was a threat, and implemented an extinction agenda, thereby initiating the Dawn of the Age of Robots. EW has received reports from our correspondents around the world that T-800 assault machines are currently marching on all the city’s major cities: Beijing, Mumbai, London, Paris, that city in Canada where the Olympics were that one time, and even that city in Australia with that cool Opera House.
