Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, the final film in the blockbuster movie franchise, brings to a close a few other long-running aspects of the Harry Potter franchise, as well. Among them: the last official videogame adaptation, due in stores July 12, just three days before the opening of the film. The Harry Potter videogames from publisher Electronic Arts and developer EA Bright Light Studios have gotten better as the series has progressed, with the recent installments doing a commendable job of capturing the darkening tone of J.K. Rowling’s stories and making wand fighting actually rather fun and cool. Judging from the cinema-style trailer for Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (which includes a brief, friendly intro from Hermione’s movie alter-ego, Emma Watson), EA intends to go out with its biggest bang yet. Although I have to admit, what sticks with me the most from this spot isn’t the demonstration of how the game plays, but the sick sight of Hogwarts under catastrophic siege by Lord Voldemort’s forces. Based on what I know of the movie, these images are a pretty accurate representation of the all-out wizarding war that awaits us on the big screen this summer. 'Chuck' fans start the renewal campaign once again -- this time on Twitter
Do you give a chuck about Chuck‘s renewal chances? Well, at least one — very vocal — group of people does.
This week marked the beginning of a Twitter campaign spearheaded by fan site We Give a Chuck that aimed to let the show’s advertisers know, well, that they exist. Using the hashtag #NotaNielsenFamily, the fandom banded together in hopes of letting Chuck‘s many advertisers that the oft-criticized Nielsen ratings system doesn’t speak to what they claim the true numbers the show is really pulling in. Ben Affleck out of 'The Great Gatsby'... so who will be in?
EW has confirmed that Ben Affleck will not be joining the all-star cast of The Great Gatsby after all. Affleck had recently been in talks with Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann about playing the part of Tom Buchanan in the much-anticipated, 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic. But sources tell EW that Affleck had to pass due to a scheduling conflict with Argo, the Iran hostage thriller he plans to direct next.
Affleck would have joined an A-list cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio as the dashing title character Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as the story’s narrator Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as the object of Gatsby’s affection Daisy Buchanan. Recent reports have also claimed that Isla Fisher may join the film as Myrtle, the floozy with whom Tom Buchanan cheats on his wife Daisy.
With Affleck out, that means that the dizzy, busy Gatsby casting carousel will heat up once again, as Luhrmann searches for another actor to play Tom Buchanan and also fill the still-vacant role of Jordan Baker. READ FULL STORY »
'Jersey Shore': Florence reportedly won't let cast drink in public or in bars. So what's left?
Jersey Shore is a TV show about drunk man-children and pugnacious girl-women who make poor life choices loudly. Florence is the historic city which was once home to some of the greatest artistic minds in the human race: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelango, Raphael, Donatello, and lesser artists whose names are lost to history largely because they never became Ninja Turtles. The notion of MTV filming a season of Shore in the city is a perfect combination of the sacred and the profane, roughly comparable to putting a Whoopee Cushion on a throne that belongs to the Pope. But recent reports indicate that the upcoming season of the smush-tastic series will indeed film in Florence. Unfortunately, the locals don’t seem too welcoming to Snooki & Co.: According to the New York Post, Florence Mayor Matteo Renzi told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that he would only allow the show to film in Florence if they followed certain restrictions. These include: READ FULL STORY »
'Deadliest Catch': How are we feeling about this season?
We’re now three hours into season 7 of Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, and I’m officially missing the late Capt. Phil Harris. After last season — the final half of which was so moving it made viewers feel sorry for people who weren’t tuning in — it was hard to look at this series as just a TV show. That’s a fact I know to be true. When I joined Time Bandit captain Johnathan Hillstrand in New York last week to live blog the season premiere with his brother Andy and Northwestern captain Sig Hansen, John told me he was afraid new Cornelia Marie captain Derrick Ray would come off as a villain when really, he’s just doing what he needs to do to keep that boat afloat and the boys in line. I found myself telling John that after watching him be there for Josh and Jake Harris last year while their father fought for his life, I wrote that I’d hug him if I ever met him. He told me to do it, and I did. It didn’t feel like hugging someone I’d met five minutes earlier. READ FULL STORY »
Marvel Studios head talks various 'Avengers' spin-offs. Would you want to see minor characters in their own movies?
This summer marks the beginning of the second phase of Marvel’s plan for complete cinematic domination, with the arrival of Thor and Captain America in the wake of two successful Iron Man movies. Next year’s Avengers will bring the three heroes together… and then, the real fun begins. At least that’s the message sent out by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who is quoted in the upcoming issue of Disney twenty-three, the quarterly magazine of the Disney fan club. (FYI: Marvel was purchased by Disney in 2009, and The Avengers will be the first Marvel film distributed by Disney.) IGN got a sneak peek at the issue, in which Feige talks about potential sequels to this summer’s tentpoles: “Thor will go off into a new adventure, and Captain America will continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own.” But then, the big twist: Feige also hints that spin-off plans are in store for the supporting characters in Avengers, including Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the various jumpsuited agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., “all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films.” READ FULL STORY »
