'The Voice': Javier Colon is clearly the early favorite -- WATCH!

After last night’s premiere of the The Voice, there is some dissension on whether NBC’s new singing competition is “a garish bore,” as EW’s Ken Tucker says in his review, or surprisingly entertaining — at least in the blind audition round — as I would argue. What’s not up for debate, however: 33-year-old father-of-two Javier Colon, who sang a stripped version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” is the one to beat so far. Watch the clip below. It shows the best of the blind audition concept: A talented performer, all four coaches (Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton) pushing their “I Want You” buttons, and the contestant getting to choose which star will be his mentor after they each try to woo him to his or her team.

UPDATE: No wonder everyone wanted him: Per Javier’s Facebook page, his résumé includes two solo albums on Capitol before he broke out of the “urban R&B” mold and started opening for the likes of Joss Stone and the Indigo Girls.

I liked a lot of them. The girl who sang Nirvana, the bald woman, the country dude, and the high school girl. But Javier is clearly the one generating the most buzz.

    • Flip

I like Nirvana woman, bald woman, and Adele woman the best. Sorry, can’t remember their names!

I think it’s kinda odd that Ken Tucker’s review was so harsh… I mean, it’s obvious the past few seasons of AI have been horrible- which is why other shows like AGT and sing off (which have weaker concepts) are still alive.
The Voice as a concept is much stronger and actually has (gasp!) real talent with people who can actually sing and aren’t just pretty faces or good performers. Some of them had a combo of every thing or two, but one thing was clear: they were equipped with very good voices.
I hope this show overwhelms AI- which has become a joke, really for so many.
I’m interested to see how the X factor does in comparison with SImon Cowell. Maybe the real competition will be between it and the Voice!
I’ll be tuning in next Tuesday night for sure!

The girl who used to be on AI clearly should’ve not been picked, not because of her prior run-in with the law, but the fact that she was not memorable enough as far as voice is concerned.

    • Mr. Holloway

Agree. I didn’t think Frenchie was very good last night.

    • Joanna

I don’t remember any run ins with the law, just the topless photos.

    • Darkness

By that argument the guy who used to have a record contract shouldn’t have been picked either. He’s had his chance already too.

      • Bea

The point of The Voice is not to find undiscovered talent in people who have no history or prior career. It’s about finding the best voice and giving them the coaching and exposure they need to succeed. MOST of the contestants have had previous recording contracts or the like. Actually one of the only ones who hasn’t is Jeff Jenkins, the other kid who turned all 4 chairs. Most people who have that level of talent have pursued music careers already, and they’re on this show because it’s not happening for them. Javier Colon has had recording contracts, but hasn’t “made it”. And he’s exceptionally talented, so power to him. I hope it happens for him.

Honestly, I wouldn’t have watched this show if it wasn’t for Javier. He is a true artist and has a beauitful soul!

    • Alfy

Frenchie did not have a run in with the law, at age 19 she had posed topless for an X-rated website. When AI found out they deem her not suitable as an contestant, though she was sent to Hollywood. She was released before the top 26 was picked. The publicity brought to the attention of others and she landed a job on Broadway in the play Rent.

Tje Austin(the guy with the afro) was my favorite on the show. His voice is similar to the singer Kevin Michael. Im going to ask Tje on twitter if he can sing Kevin Michaels song Aint Got You.

    • Favorite

And you all should listen to Kevin Michaels song Aint Got You because it is one of the most amazing and beautiful love songs ever made. Listen to that song and you will see the voice similarities that Tje and Kevin have.

      • 2nPac

What happened to Kevin Michael? I liked him a lot. Had some very good songs.

  • Joanna

Ken Tucker could not be more wrong on this one. I enjoyed the whole concept and I didn’t fast forward once, which hasn’t happened with AI in years. I can watch a 2 hour episode of AI in about 20 minutes because I can’t stand the filler and the pointless judges’ comments. I particularly liked the level of enthusiasm displayed by the coaches. No one acted like they were doing us a favor by showing up, unlike how Simon Cowell behaved on AI and how I’m sure he will behave on X Factor, a show I could not be less interested in, by the way.

    • hooch

I agree. Tucker seemed to have written that before the show started or at least brought a whole truckload of preconceived ideas with him. He could not have written a more tone deaf review.

  • JKL

I honestly thought I would get a good laugh out of this show – but it was actually good. Shock of all shocks. Haven’t watched AI since the first season, and never watch reality compeitions like DWS or even Survivor.
The judges were sincere and seemed very real. Blake Shelton cracks me up and I don’t think I’ve heard one of his songs. I think they seemed to be having fun which made it fun to watch.
Ken – maybe you need to watch it again.

  • bamalam

I thought this guy was really good. I could have done without the runs he let out every time “waiting” came up. Almost ruined the song for me.

  • Tara

I liked the 16 year old the best. Her voice was amazing.

  • Heidi

Ken Tucker is so wrong… Perhaps, he ‘thought’ he watched the show & actually didn’t??
GREAT SHOW with entertaining coaches & I see it being a BIG hit!!!!! RIP, ‘AI’…..

  • jc

Ken Tuckers review was terrible. I loved the show and will continue to watch. The chemistry between the coaches, along w/ the talent hooked me right in

  • Kristen

I wondered last night if he was the same guy that released a song called “Crazy” that I LOVE to this day..and apparently he is. I wondered what happened to him! I’ll be watching The Voice now for sure.

    • VT

Yeah, that’s him! Loved that album. He had one song called “Slow Motion” that I still play. Very underrated singer.

      • MJ

Javier is clearly a well talented singer…Check out his song “In Your Hand” AWESOME!

    • Aaron B

It is one and the same! His first album was awesome and his second one was great, but honestly, radio stopped playing R&B almost entirely, and he had no outlet to get his music heard. It’s refreshing to hear his voice again!

    • Amir

I brought that cd after I saw his video on BET back in 2003. Over time, it’s gotten scratched and stuff… so last night, after seeing him on The Voice… I downloaded it on itunes! It was good to hear him last night.

  • Heather

I loved the show. THe coaches are great. Blake and Adam crack me up!

  • Robyn

I was absolutely blown away by Javier Colon, his vocals, presence. He was a complete and total package. I Tivo’d “The Voice” and I ended up rewinding his performace 4 times. I can’t believe that he hasn’t blown up way before now! Prop! Well done!

    • tnsmoke

I did the same thing, went back over and over and watched Javier’s song and also Jeff Jenkins’s song. I loved both so much that I manually set my TiVo tonight to cherry pick just those 2 performances out of the repeat of the show tonight so I have them to keep.

    • Mike in NY

After the opening performances I figured it was Javiers contest to lose and he has continued to impress! Casey Weston is good as is the girl America chose to save on Blakes team, but both will need to become more confident with their stage presence to compete with Javier. Vickie from CeeLo’s team has a powerful voice (raspy like Melissa Etheridge) but might not have as vast a range as she would need.

  • Leslie

I loved it, I like all the judges/mentors, they all seem to have good chemistry together. I like that we don’t have to sit through the non-serious auditions with all the weirdos and people who can’t sing like on Idol.

    • Mike in NY

I fully agree! I find zero entertainment in grimacing through additions knowing they’re only on to a certain round to be made fun of. Bravo Voice… I would however like to see the coaches have more time to let us know how they are critiquing some performances

  • Izzy

This show has me so excited!!! I LOVE JAVIER COLON!! However I do really like all the ones that have gone through at this point!!

    • larry lingle

I hope the whole world gets to experience how talented of a singer Javier is. He is in my opinion one of the most gifted R&B singers out there right now. He is a great guitarist and pianist also. He singing is actually on the same level or above all of the judges. In addition to being so talented, he is also a really great human being. My best wishes go out to him as he surely deserves to win !
