'Glee': Which songs would you rather have heard during 'A Night of Neglect'?

While I’m happy to have fresh Glee episodes back on my DVR (you know things are dire when your only upcoming scheduled recording is Pregnant in Heels), last night’s “Night of Neglect” theme had me a little confused. Not to discredit the talented Lykke Li, but if New Directions is trying to put bums in the seats — and raise $5,000 — wouldn’t crowd-pleasing hits be the way to go? And is the goddess that is Adele, currently the best-selling artist of the year (rightfully so), still really neglected? Not to mention Aretha Franklin and Celine Dion, two of the most well-known divas in all the land. (Yes, “All By Myself” was originally written by Eric Carmen and later revived by the Canadian crooner, but the best version will always be one performed by a half-drunk Bridget Jones.) I’m not asking they take another stab at obscure oldies like “Run Joey Run,” or sweet, yet age-inappropriate “To Sir With Love,” but something tells me there are more neglected artists than the Queen of Soul. (Like, say, Robyn, Kelly Rowland, or Shakira.)

I was also expecting the episode’s theme to showcase more of the New Directions’ lesser-known members, a.k.a. the academic decathlon team. (never underestimate the importance of cat disease knowledge, kids.) Mike Chang was suddenly a chatterbox, speaking up more than we’ve heard all season, but poor Tina was reduced to yet another half-number, rudely interrupted by the hatas. Blasphemy! Despite being an New Directions OG, she’s the least fully realized character on the show. Maybe she’ll get a chance to do a non-comedic relief song in its entirety by season 5?

Which artists would you rather have seen Glee shine a well deserved spotlight on for its  “Night of Neglect,” PopWatchers? And who is the show’s most neglected character?

Robyn: Indestructible. Or Robyn: Dancing On My Own. Or anything by Robyn!

  • Clark

Mariah Carey! Everyone one of her songs could have been used!

  • Carly

Well I think the theme was just “neglect” and that it wasn’t necessarily about the artists themselves. Hence the song choices “all by myself” and “turning tables”. But I do agree with that even then it was still a confusing theme to have.

just look at the one hit wonder lists that VH1 has done and pick accordingly

Enough with the themes. Here’s a theme: good television. I’d like to see them revive that theme. It worked so well in the first season.

I agree, the “themes” are killing this show. Before, I couldn’t wait for Tuesday nights so I could watch Glee live. Now, I don’t really care about it (case in point, a bad spring storm last night caused me to miss part of the episode and it didn’t even bother me). I used to be glued to the set and didn’t want to miss a minute and now I have it on but it’s mainly in the background. I’ll see it through till the end of the season but unless the season finale is awesome, i’m probably going to break up with it next year.

I agree. We’re getting sick of Sue at our house–she’s no longer a funny parody; she’s abusive and cruel. As my daughter and I were watching their performances, we wondered why their parents didn’t at least come, other than the fact that they’d have to actually cast most of them. I’ve got an episode of Glee sitting on my DVR that I haven’t been able to make myself watch, due to lack of caring.

I would love to hear the Barenaked Ladies song Brian Wilson, preferrably sang by Puck because I think he is the only guy to pull it off.

      Great suggestion!!!

Good call! I’d love to hear some BNL on Glee. Their songs have great harmonies that the Glee kids could totally work. You Run Away, Too Little Too Late, It’s All Been Done, Another Postcard (ok that would be out there but fun!), or Testing 123. *sigh*

Barring BNL how about some Plain White T’s for a similar reason: great harmonies!

Heard the paltrow version of turning tables on itunes, lets just says its different and leave it at that!

    • SaraS

      Different, meaning a disgrace.

  • Chicken Little

SHAKIRA SHAKIRA! YES! She is seriously one of the most talented and underrated artists out there. When is Glee going to cover her?!

    • anon

No one needs Shakira. I believe she’s anti-semitic.

i also have been watching pregnant in heels! the brainiacs stuff was the best

SO IF glee wanted to bring parents in … the kids in Glee are ages 15-18; their parent are probably aged 35-60 (?) — parents went to HS and college in late 80′s early 90′s … female pop songs would be by Sade, Anita Baker, En Vogue, TLC (“Chasing Waterfalls” ?); also songs by REM (Losing my religion, Stand ??), U2, B-52′s … (uh, could glee kid’s pull off Rock Lobster?); music from 60′s by Simon & Garfunkle; Red Hot Chili Peppers “Higher Ground”. .. A lot of artists are neglected.

    • Sanderson

… to continue; stuff from Peter Gabriel, Joan Baez, Led Zeppelin, The Cure, The Cult, Morrissey. Janis Ian “At 17″. And in the “My Parents Listened to WHAT?!” category: punk rock !!, Industrial (NIN, Ministry), Grunge rock … and I’m done.

  • No brainer

There’s only one answer to most neglected: It’s Tina. She should have gone back on stage and finished her song. Then Mike could go dance. And do we know anything about her other than she faked her stutter?

  • LF

can anyone tell my why there parents didn’t come? parents and relatives make up about 90% of all benefit concerts in schools not students and they pay anything to see their little babies and the hecklers wouldn’t have dared put off poor little tina if all their parents were there

    • SaraS

Or what about the families of everyone in the GOSPEL CHOIR!? Hahahaha. That was laughable. They didn’t invite anyone.

    • Xen

Another perceptive, clever observation that is lost in the nonsense of the glee universe. Now it’s all about selling downloadable songs. Sigh.

  • Crystal

I wish we could have heard Tina’s whole song – I loved what we got!!

  • Jenny

The only Glee member I care about is Kurt. The rest of them bore me. I’m so on the verge of quitting on this show. Ryan Murphy better finish this season strong.

  • SaraS

I completely agree with this post. I was SO excited when Shue announced they’re doing songs by neglected artists – then they do an entire song by Celine Dion (..ANOTHER ONE!?) and Aretha. Are you kidding me?
Glad Adele was on there, because she was neglected until this year in the US, but seriously – Gwyneth? No. And they didn’t even get all the lyrics right.
I would’ve loved some Fall Out Boy (they have done some amazing albums while being consistently snubbed at the Grammy’s) or even NSync, or maybe “More than Words” by Extreme. If I had more time to think about it I would but come on, Glee! They could’ve done so much better.
