We’re now three hours into season 7 of Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, and I’m officially missing the late Capt. Phil Harris. After last season — the final half of which was so moving it made viewers feel sorry for people who weren’t tuning in — it was hard to look at this series as just a TV show. That’s a fact I know to be true. When I joined Time Bandit captain Johnathan Hillstrand in New York last week to live blog the season premiere with his brother Andy and Northwestern captain Sig Hansen, John told me he was afraid new Cornelia Marie captain Derrick Ray would come off as a villain when really, he’s just doing what he needs to do to keep that boat afloat and the boys in line. I found myself telling John that after watching him be there for Josh and Jake Harris last year while their father fought for his life, I wrote that I’d hug him if I ever met him. He told me to do it, and I did. It didn’t feel like hugging someone I’d met five minutes earlier.
Last season hit me hard because I was then, and continue to be, losing my father, who has brain radiation-induced dementia and is finding it increasingly difficult to communicate. When I tell him I love him now, I sometimes get three hums back, and I know that’s him saying it. But all 8.5 million viewers who saw Phil worry that he hadn’t been a good enough father, and Josh ease his mind, still carry that moment with them. Of course the show can’t maintain that level of emotional impact, nor would we want it to because it means someone suffering another loss. But without Phil, the show has become just a show again — albeit it one of TV’s best — and even though we’re getting some truly stunning cinematography this season as the Bering Sea rages, I can’t help but grieve a little for that. You can tell producers are trying — how many shots of seagulls, said to be the spirits of sailors lost, did we see in this week’s episode? How much did reliving Jake Anderson hearing about his father going missing as he sat in the Northwestern wheelhouse alone at night gut you? (I’ve said it before, there is nothing more chilling than the sound of a scared, helpless adult child saying “Mom?”) Still, compared to the palpable pain and honesty we experienced last season, those moments felt a bit manufactured, even though they weren’t. To be fair, once Jake started talking about how after his father went missing he’d become the man of the house for his four sisters and their combined 12 children, and had to make sure their bills were paid, it got very real. There’s something about his soft voice and softer eyes that can cut you. All he wants to do is run his own boat, and he doesn’t see Sig leaving the Northwestern to him. During the premiere live blog, the Hillstrands said if they could steal anyone from Sig, it would be Jake for his ambition and heart. I think Sig letting Jake drive the boat to pick up the first pot of the season showed he thinks of him like a son — even if he ribbed him when he didn’t get close enough and had to turn around.
There is still plenty of drama on Deadliest Catch this season, it’s just an adjustment to have so much of it revolve around the crab count again. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fascinating to watch the Cornelia Marie and Ramblin’ Rose, both fishing for the elusive blue crab, average two a pot and see the toll it takes on the crew. That was a pretty telling moment when skeptical Cornelia Marie engineer/deckhand Steve Ward told Ray, “I hope you nail ‘em.” The captain’s response: “We. We are a crew and a team. We have to hold this boat together. We have to take care of each other.” (They finally got on some crab in their third string, but it ended 10 pots in when they discovered sand fleas — “the maggots of the Bering Sea” — which devour the bait.) Over on the Ramblin’ Rose, when a buddy’s chart failed to produce crab for the fleet’s youngest skipper, cocky Elliott Neese, deckhand Faresa Iaulualo had the quote of the night: “He better get more than five. I’m gonna throw his ass overboard.” It was sound bites like that that made me miss Phil in a different way. I’m sure producers had their reasons for not showing the Time Bandit at all this episode, but I wouldn’t recommend going another episode without Andy and Johnathan’s banter. Especially when Edgar is relatively mum on the Northwestern, and the promising captain of the Seabrooke, Scott Campbell Jr., tells his younger brother deckhand, “You’re the bait master!” and doesn’t feel the need to follow it up with, “I mean, the master baiter!”
While Jr. and Sig are cruising, Capt. Keith Colburn struck out taking the Wizard to new grounds, and had no crab — which meant no sleep for days. (Andy Hillstrand told us during the premiere live blog that the longest he’s ever gone without sleep is 82 hours.) That whole fight between Keith and the crew just seemed like a result of sleep-deprivation. Clearly that wasn’t the right time for Keith to put greenhorn Paul Edgren on the stack and expect his brother, relief captain Monte Colburn (a.k.a. Mouse), to train him. And clearly the crew should’ve cut the guy some slack since he had no idea what he was doing other than worrying that he would miss a tie and get one of them killed. After Keith reamed out the crew and wouldn’t let them say a word, Mouse didn’t talk to Keith for 26 hours. The brothers giggling over Mouse’s suggestion that Keith invite the crew, which had no more than a snack break in 50 hours, to come inside for a candy bar before starting on the next string was more hilarious than the joke. It’s amazing how laughter lifts the mood, isn’t it? Keith let his crew come in for the night and you felt their exhaustion as some of them just crashed wherever they sat down. (How had Paul put it? “If you told me I could get six hours of sleep but I had to do it in the cod bin, I’d wrap up with a cod and go to sleep right now.”)
Your turn. How are you feeling about the new season of Deadliest Catch? Are you warming to the new captains, Jr. and Elliott?

It’s bittersweet to me. I have been a fan of the show since the first ‘special’ they ran.
I still enjoy the show, even without Cap’n Phil’s laugh. I hope to see more of the casual rivalries return soon.
I really enjoyed the truck fishing.
I am enjoying watching and seeing new faces and their new stories instead of the same old people
Mandi, will you be recapping the show on a regular basis? I’m sorry your dad isn’t doing well – I followed the recaps last year and remember you saying he was ill. So far, I’m enjoying the season, though it does feel something is either missing or not authentic. I can’t put my finger on what, yet. But I’ll say, in the opening sequence where they show Phil smiling behind the glass, that gets me.
I never much cared for Keith, and I don’t particularly like the new CM captain. It looks to me like he’s playing too much for the cameras. Same for the younger captain fishing the blue crab. The CM captain jumped on the engineer rather than the son, because he couldn’t go after Jake. The younger captain (I forget the boat), made an example of the one guy who wasn’t his buddy, and sent him home. I suppose this may reflect reality, but it seems more to reflect reality TV to me. Still, I find the show compelling and I’ll keep watching. I did wonder what happened to Matt on the Northwestern.
Rob, I heard Matt had a relapse and went to rehab to deal with it. Supposedly, he’ll be back for opi season.
I am so happy there is a new season of TDC.
Elliot seems to be a fool. He is so far from help, leaves the wheelhouse and puts him The Captain in harms way, that was just stupid to do.
I understand the new CM Captain tying to keep everyone online, but hes playing for the cameras and trying to sound like hes doing something the rest of the Captains in the show dont do. I wish the other guy who drove for Phil was on the show, hes very missed.
Time Bandit, fun as always. Wizard, I dont think much of Keith, or Mouse at all. I feel Keither isnt really smart enough to Captain a boat from how the show portrays him. Im glad the producers have creative control and editing on this. I would like to hear they pay the ships and crewmembers each season. Lord knows DC makes bank on this show.
not a fan of the new guys just yet–i much prefer watching sig and the rest of the guys weve grown used to
I agree..Im a fan of the guys I grew up watching, Sig, Hillstrand brothers and Phils crew….I really miss Phil! It was sooo hard to not tear up watching the empty boat without him in it. Altho the comment made by the new captian about him being the captain and phil being dead is true HAVE HEART DUDE! That was sad!
I tried to watch it last night but there were so many *bleeps* that that was all I was hearing. I know this is guys being guys, but still, clean it up a little. You’re on camera.
I’m enjoying watching the new and improved Hillstrand brothers. They have been rather reserved this season, which I think more closely resembles their off-camera personas. They seemed to go out of their way to create storylines and drama in past seasons, and I’m happy they’re seemingly sticking to fishing this year.
This is also the first time in ages that I am actually enjoying the new boats. Every year, they try to incorporate a new crew, and I have disliked them all – until now. Both boats are enjoyable in their own way. I think it was especially smart of the producers to include a second boat who is fishing for blue crab like the Cornelia Marie. It helps the audience to see that blue crab really is a tough catch.
I do not like the Rambling Rose captain… he’s such a pompous dbag. The other new guy hasn’t made enough of an impression for me to decide on him yet. I missed the Time Bandit guys last night… they are my favorite boat. The show is definitely not the same without Phil.
I totally agree with you, especially the RR capt. part. blahh.
I am not happy with the two new boats as well, especially the Capt. on the Rambling Rose. We’ve yet to see the Kodiak and we missed the Time Bandit last night.
I also follow the blog: Dutch Harbor Dirt and know there were some “issues” with Derrick and the boys. I don’t know what is truth and what is fiction but I do know like others, the show is missing Phil.
Without Capt. Phil on the show, I think this will be the Deadliest Catch’s last season. Phil was the indeed the star of the show and he will be sorely missed I was not impressed with the 3 new shows at all. Please cut out the Rambling Rose, that young captain is a jerk. The show might improve if you bring in the Time Bandit
I miss Phil too, but he’d want the show to go on as well, that I know for damn sure and I never had the privilege of meeting him.
Yep! BRING ON THE BANDIT BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t stand Captain Greenhorn (Neese). Campbell’s growing on me. Got that out of the way.
My gut tells me they had these two new boats signed on when they didn’t think the Time Bandit and Northwestern were going to be on, and by the time the latter boats did sign back on, it was too late to back out of the contract with the newbies.
What sucks about this is that it IS leaving vet boats out. Haven’t seen one shot of Wild Bill yet, and to leave the Time Bandit out of an entire episode is just a crime.
So far, I am disappointed in this season. I want my Time Bandit. I want Josh and Jake and Wild Bill, not two boatloads of strangers. The Wizard….they say Keith is a decent human being on dry land, maybe he should stay there!!
I AGREE COMPLETELY!!! It was bag enough losing Phil and now it seems like we’re loosing all our guys…the first two shows have been nothing but the two new boats and I’m sorry, but the Deadliest Catch to me is the NorthWestern, Time Bandit, and Cornelia. I don’t know why the producers don’t just call it “The Rambling Rose and Seabrook Show” because that seems like ALL we are getting. I’m giving it one more week, if I don’t see my guys who MAKE the show what it is…I’m no longer going to be watching the Deadliest Catch. I’m all for showing other boats…LOVE Wild Bill and am glad he’s on there now, but focusing on the two boats that are temporary guests on the show is ridiculous!!! Last year when the Producers almost lost the Time Bandit and the Northwestern…they couldn’t wait to settle, just to keep the guys on there and now we don’t even see them. It’s pretty pathetic that the Cornelia isn’t getting more air time as well.
I was shocked at how rude Captain Phil Harris’ replacement captain was to his crew member before they left port. I can understand asserting your authority but to chest butt him and be that in your face was an insult to Phil’s memory. I don’t like him at all and his bad karma seems to be landing on the boat and the fishing.
Am I wrong? but Derrick Ray of CM said to steve last night that it was the all the crews responsibility to find crab, but I thought the captain was responsible for that and the crew was responsible for working the deck. I just feel he is trying to find an excuse for when he fails so that he doesnt have to take the blame. Just saying
Capt derrick is a douche bag for sure. I’m disappointed in Jake for smoking dope on the boat. Major disrespect to his dad.
