Russell Brand joins 'Rock Of Ages' cast. Move over Aldous Snow?

We can’t fight this feeling anymore, PopWatchers: the ever-expanding line-up for the Rock of Ages feature has got us pretty stoked. While New Line confirmed to EW that Oscar nominee/all-around busy lady Amy Adams unfortunately won’t be joining the all-star cast (which, thus far, includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, and more) on the big screen for the adaptation of the Broadway musical, Russell Brand will.

Adam Shankman, who will be at the helm of Rock of Ages, told followers via his Twitter Wednesday, “I can officially announce Russell Brand as your Lonny in #rockofagesmovie ! I see a mullet in his future…maybe a Nikki Six?” New Line Cinema confirmed to EW that while Brand has not officially closed the deal yet, he will very soon. (He was hopeful about joining the cast back in March, when he told EW at the Hope premiere: “I have to make sure I see me wife [Katy Perry] enough, but if we can work out the schedule, then yeah, I want to do it.”)  Still, this is a lot of awesome information to absorb at once, so let’s break it down: Brand will not only play Lonny, the over-the-top, former rocker who now runs the Bourbon (the club owned by Baldwin’s character Dennis), but he may also be shaping his famously manic hair into a mullet.

Since a third movie featuring Brand’s other on-screen rock alter ego Aldous Snow has yet to be announced (that still doesn’t mean we’re not going to listen to the wildly inappropriate “Inside of You” on our iPods, thankyouverymuch), we’re especially pumped for this news. If Rock of Ages sticks close to the Broadway show, then he’ll be singing along with “Just Like Paradise/Nothin’ but a Good Time,” “Harden My Heart/Shadows of the Night,” “The Final Countdown,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and, of course, “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”

But, then again, will it be even possible for Brand to step out of the shadow of Aldous Snow and Infant Sorrow? Here’s a character that was not only an outrageous, egotistical rock god in both Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek, but a believable and likable one at that. Will Brand, who’s already something of a rock star himself (well, in spite of Hop), be able to bring a whole new spin to playing a rocker on screen?

PopWatchers, you singing and dancing with joy over the fact that Russell Brand is on board to play Lonny in Rock of Ages, or will he be forever associate in your mind with Aldous Snow? Let us know in the comments section below.

Obviously they weren’t going to cast him, but I’m still going to have a hard time accepting anybody but Mitch Jarvis as Lonny! I really hope that Brand doesn’t just redo his Aldous shtick.

Chelsea, you are my new best friend. I’ve tried to imagine anyone saying “I understand” like Jarvis. If he ever comes to your town as Keith Stone, tell him the mullet is not Lonny-worthy.

was this written by Russel Brand?
“Will Brand, who’s already something of a rock star himself”-sez you.
To most he is a one trick pony with very little talent who married well.

Please. Make him go away. He may be the most singular unfunny actor I have ever seen. This film is going to bomb. I don’t care WHO is in it. Old thirty/forty-somethings may want to hear dumb hair metal songs in the context of a film. Young people sure as hell don’t.

Was hoping Jack Black for Lonnie. I just can’t see him having chemistry with Alec Baldwin. This movie casting makes me sad.

Didn’t think of him before, but yes, Jack Black would’ve been so much better. He has a decent singing voice, too.

seriously, this guy is so one note. he has one character, one role, one tone. he is a horrid actor and i can’t believe we all have to suffer through more of him.

It should have beeb Sasha Baron Cohen as Lonny. PERIOD.

    “We got the clap
    You got the clap
    We cook the rocks
    You took the smack
    Oh yeah!”
    lol!

Seriously, Jack Black should have been Lonnie.

Jack Black would have been the PERFECT Lonny!!! I honestly can not see Brand in the role.

I don’t know anything about Rock of Ages as a musical, but I’m very excited to see Tom Cruise singing. He’s a hollywood icon who is not known for singing, dancing or comedy yet that’s what he has been doing for the last few years to great success. Russell Brand on the other hand does seem to be a one trick pony. Maybe I’m just missing it but I don’t think he is very talented or funny. Even though I don’t know the story, Jack Black does seem to be a perfect fit for this type of film and it would have great to see him and Tom back together on the big screen.

There has not been one good casting decision for this movie. It’s like they haven’t even watched the Broadway show.
