Michael Shannon talks General Zod audition

There was a General Zod sighting in North Carolina last night. Michael Shannon, the Oscar-nominated actor (Revolutionary Road) who’s been cast as Superman’s nemesis in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel reboot, was honored with an Emerging Master Award at the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem. He shared his surreal first encounter with Snyder and described his audition where Snyder had to ask Shannon to play Zod a little more friendly towards Henry Cavill’s hero. Take a look.

Wouldn’t it be great if Snyder lets Shannon’s Zod keep the actor’s own accent?

    NICE BOOTS.

As long as “kneel before Zod!” comes out of that guy’s mouth at some point in that movie, I don’t care what kind of accent he has.

wouldn’t it be great if they did not use Zod as the villian?
While poeple seem to like the actor, no one is really happy about them using Zod again.
Old, tired, out of ideas…..even thought there is a huge amount of source material with ideas to choose from.
SUPERMAN FAIL…oops that sounded like Bizaro Superman…..which they have never heard of.

I have no problem with them using Zod. It makes for a great revenge story, since Superman’s father is the one that imprisoned him. Brainiac might have been cool, but he’ll probably show up in the sequel.

Just watched him in the Runaways over the weekend. The movie was lame but he was entertaining, and he’s great on Boardwalk Empire. He’s one of those actors who seems to elevate everything he’s in.

I mean, casting Zod as a villain that Superman can actually fight is good. We’ll actually have a Superman that throws a punch, this time. But I’m not excited over Zod. So boring..

I think you guys are crazy. I will be the fanboy that learned his lesson from The Dark Knight, that using a classic villain and remaking them is not necessarily boring as long as one makes a compelling film. Plus using someone known makes it harder for Zak Snyder to eff it up. To me he is the only part I’m not too sure about. Sure with a good budget he can pull special effects out of his a$$. But true film direction takes intelligence, creativity, & guts. Perhaps Christopher Nolan producing will be able to inspire Zak to raise his game because I watched Spartacus the series, and it’s effects aren’t that far from what 300 was just a few years ago. Meaning that this has to be a film first, just like Dark Knight, and a special effects bonanza second. I’ll even swallow the unnecessary, but effective slow motion movement (overused in Smallville to death), as long as the film is a leap up in 3D filmmaking and the film is good. I just wish this movie the best because it’s the Man of Steel. Superman just shouldn’t be having shi!!y movies made for the series.

Great article. I cant wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
