'American Idol': Who exactly IS the frontrunner?

American-Idol

The most exciting development to come out of this week’s American Idol? No, not Naima’s pants. Or Casey’s save. Or even Paul’s sensual back massage for Ryan. Nope — it’s that for the first time in Idol history, it’s clear there is no obvious frontrunner. Think about it: READ FULL STORY »

'Grey's Anatomy' musical sneak peek: Should the show be taking this kind of risk?

Greys-Anatomy-Ramirez

You are probably extremely skeptical about next week’s Grey’s Anatomy: The Musical Event. I don’t blame you; I can’t help but be too. Next week, we learn that Callie was gravely injured in the car crash we saw at the end of last night’s episode, and, as the team works on her, we enter her subconscious, which is apparently rife with musical numbers we’ve heard on the show before.

The thing is, I’m not concerned about the cast’s ability to execute this challenging episode of television. Sara Ramirez is a stage vet with a powerful voice. Sarah Drew’s single line about the endangered baby in the promo below broke my heart just a little. Chandra Wilson is, well, Chandra Wilson. Need I continue?

Rather, I’m worried about how this risky move could affect the show’s upward momentum. READ FULL STORY »

'The Oprah Winfrey Show' ends May 25. What's your favorite Oprah memory?

As revealed in Oprah Winfrey’s Jet cover story in February — and during the talk show host’s January interview on Piers Morgan Tonight — Harpo has confirmed that The Oprah Winfrey Show will air its final episode exactly two months from now, on May 25, 2011. We know what we’re all thinking: I need a new car, so how can I get tickets to that show? How sad! It’s a fitting date to say goodbye to Oprah though — the talk show maven has been airing headline-making interviews and giving away heart attack-inducing items for 25 seasons now.

So here’s the tough question (one that requires you to think alllllll the way back to the ’80s, even if you’d like to pretend your hair in that decade didn’t happen): Over the course of 25 seasons, what’s your favorite Oprah memory? READ FULL STORY »

This week's trailers: 'Mr. Popper's Penguins,' 'Captain America,' 'Your Highness,' and more!

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

What do penguins, superheroes, medieval knights and musketeers all have in common? Nothing. Seriously, they’re not even all mammals. But they’re all in this week’s trailers, which feature a clip from the new Jim Carrey comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a new look at Chris Evans as a weakling-turned-hero in Captain America, and some randy hijinks with Natalie Portman, James Franco, and Danny McBride in Your Highness. Plus a whole lot more! Check out all the non sequitur-ial fun after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Oxford English Dictionary adds OMG, LOL, and BFF to its pages. WTF?

OMG, PopWatch BFFs. Big news! The Oxford English Dictionary has added online-speak into its respectable pages: OMG, LOL, BFF, and IMHO are four of 900 new words that have been added to the OED. (Among the other expressions added is muffin top, which is lucky enough to boast the most hilariously polite of definitions: “A protuberance of flesh above the waistband of a tight pair of trousers.” Nice use of ideophone with protuberance, OED!)

IMHO, the OED should tread carefully. After all, it’s only a matter of time before they honor every horrendous misspelling from Sarah Palin’s Twitter (Oh, wait, the Oxford American Dictionary already did that) and add an entirely separate section of every word in the dictionary in caps, thanks to Kanye. The OED can’t be 400,000 pages long, guys! READ FULL STORY »

Watch Megan Fox modeling Armani underwear and jeans: Happy Friday!

Let no one say PopWatch isn’t an equal-opportunity connoisseur of the celebrity form. Enjoy a behind-the-scenes video of Megan Fox modeling Emporio Armani underwear and Armani Jeans. I think the editor of this clip showed incredible restraint, waiting 37 seconds to bare some serious skin. That couch wins MVP in my book. I actually like the making-of video more than the ad itself (also embedded below). It’s less pretentious. READ FULL STORY »

'Friday Night Lights': Can you resist the DVD shortcut?

It wasn’t easy to ignore the final season of Friday Night Lights when it originally aired this winter on DirecTV. I work for an entertainment website after all. Heck, Ken Tucker, he of the splendid FNL recaps, works down the hall from me. There are only so many times you can stick your fingers in your ears and yell incoherently while running in the opposite direction from your co-workers when they chat about Dillon football before they begin to think there’s something seriously wrong with you. But I did it. I was disciplined. I managed to remain completely oblivious of season 5′s developments and ultimate conclusion, and I was looking forward to be rewarded with 13 weeks of Dillon triumph and a bittersweet farewell.

But then I learned this: Season 5 of Friday Night Lights is available on DVD 10 days before it premieres on NBC! Oh, NBC Universal, why do you toy with me so? READ FULL STORY »

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' reportedly nixes Geek Chorus

The “Geek Chorus” in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has reportedly been cut from the show, according to the New York Times. The four-person group — modeled after the chorus in classical Greek drama — consisted of three comic geeks and a young woman who explained plot points in the musical. The chorus was widely panned by critics, leading some to predict its removal after the departure of ex-director Julie Taymor earlier this month. “The production will not comment on any substantive changes to the show,” said spokesperson Rick Miramontez in a statement.

The $65 million Spider-Man will go on hiatus beginning April 18 and is expected to undergo a drastic overhaul before reopening on May 12. On March 22, the production faced another setback when T.V. Carpio, the actress who took over the role of Arachne after Natalie Mendoza was injured, was forced to leave the show due to an injury sustained during a performance.

Lunchtime Poll: What's troubling Matt Damon?

Here, he is filming We Bought a Zoo in L.A. this week. Not to get all acting coach/Carl Weathers on Matt Damon, but I feel like maybe he should seem a little more freaked out by that BEAR. Or maybe not. He’s the one who went ahead and bought a zoo. This is what happens. He’s just dealing with it. That bear does seem kind of lazy, and maybe generous. Hunny for everyone!

Kirstie Alley and George Lopez's Twitter feud continues. Could this hurt Alley's 'Dancing' chances?

Start placing your bets: Round two of Kirstie Alley v. George Lopez has begun! As you know, earlier this week, the TBS late-night host compared Alley to a dancing pig. Alley, naturally, fired back via Twitter, writing, “Just remember what happens to the big bad, drunk woolf …falls in a boiling pot of vodka. Piggy laughs.” He quickly tweeted an apology saying he “misjudged the joke,” but the damage had already been done. But wait! There’s more! Instead of letting bygones be bygones, Alley tweeted at Lopez that she didn’t need or want his apology. “I want your kidney dude..on behalf of ur X and all the women uv insulted…give it back.” (Alley was referring to Lopez’s ex-wife, who famously donated a kidney to her then-ailing husband. Harsh!) She later tweeted that “I want ur Kidney dude” will replace “here’s your ring back!” Is it just me, or will that one not pick up steam?

I’m all for drama on the dance floor. (I give it a Len Goodman seh-ven!) But will Alley’s drama outside of the ballroom help or hurt her DWTS chances? Fans tend to love the bigger-than-life personalities on the show, but could this venom-laced back-and-forth just make the charming frontrunner look… catty? READ FULL STORY »
