'The Host's Leaderboard,' Week 2: A ridiculous 'Dancing With the Stars' chat with Tom Bergeron

dwts-leaderboard-week-02a

.

Welcome, DANCMSTRs, to a new PopWatch feature called “The Host’s Leaderboard”! Dancing With the Stars‘ fearless host and leader Tom Bergeron has agreed to call me every Tuesday night to give his “scores” in a few innocuous categories of my choosing. He won’t comment on the dances or who’s going to win, so don’t even ask!

Our Week 2 chat is chock full o’ gems — in addition to expanding on the above categories, Tom gets into why EW.com’s Hidden Gems give him migraines, his seasonal recording of the treasured “Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!” voiceover, and why the molecules of a lifetime’s worth of spray tans can be beneficial to pregnant alums like season 5′s Mel B — “the original ass-grabber.” Enjoy. 'Dilbert' cartoonist Scott Adams draws feminist outrage

A week after posting — and subsequently deleting — a blog post about “men’s rights,” Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams continues to be criticized for comparing society’s treatment of women to the coddling of children and mentally handicapped persons, while lamenting the unfair treatment of men. In his lengthy post (which you can read here), Adams writes:

“The reality is that women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently. It’s just easier this way for everyone. You don’t argue with a four-year old about why he shouldn’t eat candy for dinner. You don’t punch a mentally handicapped guy even if he punches you first. And you don’t argue when a women tells you she’s only making 80 cents to your dollar. It’s the path of least resistance. You save your energy for more important battles.” READ FULL STORY »

Ridley Scott planning Gertrude Bell movie. Who's pumped to see Scott tackle the biopic genre?

Ridley Scott’s rep has confirmed to EW that the Gladiator director is hoping to helm a biopic centered on Gertrude Bell, with Jeffrey Caine (The Constant Gardener) tapped to pen the project. (Deadline first reported the news.) It’s an interesting bit of news for two reasons: 1) Seeing a picture chronicling the life of the British explorer — who helped establish the modern-day Iraq — would be incredibly relevant, not to mention fascinating, while our troops remain in the war-torn country; and 2) A Gertrude Bell film would be a far less flashy film than we’re used to from the director of Blade Runner and Alien. But, since it’s Scott, it will be also more exciting than we’re used to for a biopic! After all, we’re talking about a woman who also served as a WWI spy. (And I claim I’m busy!)

It’s surprising that throughout Scott’s 30-year-plus career, he has yet to tackle a biopic, instead opting for big-budget epics (see: Gladiator), critically acclaimed sci-fi pictures (see: Alien), and occasional cult fantasies (see: Legend). (Yes, American Gangster was based on a true story, but I wouldn’t necessarily classify the film, which was sold as a crime drama, as a true biopic.) READ FULL STORY »

Rise of the Cobra: Missing snake from Bronx Zoo is a big hit on Twitter. Who knew?

I just started following a snake on Twitter. Well, not even a snake — a person who is pretending to be a missing snake. It was one of those “How did I get here?” moments.

Mind you, it’s not just any snake. It’s the 20-inch Egyptian cobra that has been missing from Bronx Zoo since Monday, and has since become a bit of a celebrity. As of this posting, almost 150,000 people follow it on Twitter.

Admittedly, the Tweets are full of snake pun goodness. (“Getting my morning coffee at the Mudtruck. Don’t even talk to me until I’ve had my morning coffee. Seriously, don’t. I’m venomous.”) But I have to ask: Are all 150,000 New Yorkers? Or does everyone care about this missing snake?

Also, how many Z-list celebrities do you predict will soon pretend to be lost in attempt to gain followers? And at what point while obsessing over this story do you think I’m clear to start the @SandrasDignity Twitter account?

What’s the best live tweet session you’ve seen from a TV show? The Good Wife writers produced a solid one last night. Follow them here. They stated the obvious — “You guys really love your Cary and Kalinda, don’t you?” and “No one can rock a purple shirt quite like Eli Gold….” — but they also gave some nice teases in response to fan questions, including that America Ferrera will be back for one more episode this season, on April 12 (I love seeing what she does to Eli); that Alicia will find out about Peter and Kalinda’s infidelity at some point before the end of the season; that if we want to know if that revelation will renew Alicia’s desire for Will, we should “STAY TUNED!” (all caps combined with “Don’t feel bad for Alicia. She’s stronger than ever… ” means yes, right?); that Will’s girlfriend Tammy returns next week (I still don’t like her); and, of course, that Sarah Silverman will be guest-starring in the season’s penultimate episode. Per CBS, Silverman will play “the smart, funny owner of a sexually-explicit website, devoted to connecting married people who are looking to have affairs. She’s sued by a woman who is convinced that her husband was murdered as a result of using the website, and must turn to Alicia (Julianna Margulies) and the firm for help.” READ FULL STORY »

Angelina Jolie comic book seems to suggest that Angelina is actually three people

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Female Force: Angelina Jolie is a biographical comic book about the famous actress — but you wouldn’t know that from the cover (see left). No, based on the cover (and not on reality), this is a brave piece of muckraking journalism which offers the looniest conspiracy theory this side of everything Oliver Stone has said in the last decade: Apparently, the being we know as “Angelina Jolie” is actually three extraordinarily attractive triplets. On the far left is Teasingly Charming Angelina, star of Pushing Tin and The Good Shepherd. In the middle is Gorgeously Brutal Angelina, star of action-stravaganzas like Salt and Wanted. On the right is Thoughtful Charity Angelina, crusader for truth and and global justice. (You can tell she’s thoughtful, because she’s staring at something in the distance. Also: cufflinks!) Coming soon from the same people: Female Force: Ayn Rand, in which (based on the cover) we learn that the author of Atlas Shrugged has ascended to a higher plane and is now a giant floating head staring at the earth, and also the sun has been replaced by a giant glowing Communist flag. Topical!

Update: Annie’s recap is liiiiiiiiiiiive!

Don’t click through if you don’t want to know! Candy Land adaptation nabs 'Kung Fu Panda' writers. Now, let's cast the movie!

Looks like the Candy Land movie is jumping ahead a few green spaces: Universal confirms with EW that Kung Fu Panda writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger are set to write the adaptation of the popular board game, while Kevin Lima (Enchanted) is attached to direct the film. It’s tasty news for those of us who are not allergic to the idea of a board game on the big screen — though I understand a Candy Land film mostly gives studios the opportunity to profit off of merchandise in Target’s game aisle or at your local theater’s snack bar, I can’t resist the draw of a project that aims to present all of the game’s sugary, nostalgic images in a fantastical, color-laced feature. It will be just like Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” except with fewer whipped cream boob guns! But now that we know the project is skipping along, let’s get to the important stuff: Let’s cast Candy Land, The Movie! READ FULL STORY »

'Mad Men' casting cuts? Who could you not live without?

mad-men

There’s trouble brewing at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and AMC are at loggerheads over his next contract, and the cable station announced today that season 5 of the Emmy-winning series, once hoped to arrive this summer, will be delayed to 2012. The two parties remain at odds over creative issues related to monetizing the revered but modestly-rated series, and some reports claim that AMC asked Weiner to ditch two characters in a cost-saving measure. Everyone in last year’s cast is under contract for season 5, but after that, who knows?

If true, I’m immediately in Weiner’s corner — no matter that he refuses to take a reported $30 million offer that would make him the highest-paid showrunner on cable television. If there was ever a series that made the most of a deep cast, it’s Mad Men. Take, for example, affable Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton). He was missed when he was left behind after the break-up of the original ad agency, making his return in the middle of season 4 like greeting an old college chum. READ FULL STORY »
