'One Life to Live' adds a little more drama... with me

If “every writer is a frustrated actor…,” as Rod Serling is quoted as saying, then shouldn’t the chance for a journalist to act in the medium they cover be equally thrilling? Yes… thrilling and terrifying, as I found out when I got to do a small part on ABC’s One Life to Live. My scene with Bo (Bob Woods) and Rex (John-Paul Lavoisier) airs today, so you can judge how it all turned out. But I can tell you what it was like getting through it. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': David Cook's 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' cover named cast-off song

idol-david-cookImage Credit: Frank MIcelotta/FoxSo, looks like every contestant who doesn’t win the 10th season of American Idol will hate The Breakfast Club: David Cook’s rep has announced that Simon Fuller has chosen the season 7 winner’s cover of Simple Minds’ 1985 hit “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” as this season’s farewell song. But this is good, good news, for several reasons: 1) My mother, a reported Cougar 4 Cook, will be happy every Thursday night, no matter who goes home, 2) This sounds much, much better than “Celebrate Me Home,” and 3) It’s a step in ensuring that we never forget about David Cook (at least this season), giving him some extra press for his upcoming sophomore album (out in May), which every Archie-hater like me is hoping catapults to the top of the charts. Come on, watch this and try to tell me the nice-guy Idol winner doesn’t deserve at least Daughtry levels of success! READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor': Will Russell ever win? And do you want him to?

Russell-HantzImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBSAs we saw on last night’s Survivor (SPOILER ALERT!), Russell Hantz — lover of immunity idols, himself, fire, hats that don’t suit him, and himself — was booted all the way to Redemption Island… just three weeks into the competition. Now, thanks to this season’s new twist, we can’t count Russell out yet — something tells me that Survivor‘s most aggressive player would be the one to rise from elimination like the imaginary Phoenix flying around in Phillip’s head, blocking out the part of the brain that helps you pronounce “Francesca.” But it still begs the question: Even if Russell returns, can he win the prize? Can Russell ever win Survivor? READ FULL STORY »

Pia Toscano's 'I'll Stand By You': One of the show's best 'Whoa, where'd that come from' moments?

Pia-ToscanoImage Credit: Michael Becker/FoxMaybe my attention has been focused too much on Casey Abrams, Jacob Lusk, Lauren Alaina, and Paul McDonald to notice, but where the heck did Pia Toscano come from?

Last night, after Peaches announced Pia would be closing the show, I couldn’t remember her audition particularly well without consulting the Google Lords. (I only knew that she came out of the east-coast auditions.) Her Hollywood Week group performance sparked a bit of my memory, because I remember her group had been one of the few with (shockingly rare) solid harmonies. But she had been an afterthought. Shows what I know… READ FULL STORY »

Charlie Sheen's Twitter account sets Guinness World Record

charlie-sheen-goddessesImage Credit: Mike Austin/NBCWe all knew that Charlie Sheen was going to set a world record for something. Now we have confirmation: According to Mashable, Sheen’s Twitter account has achieved a Guinness World Record in “Fastest Time to Reach 1 Million Followers.” (EW attempted to confirm this record with Twitter, but Twitter indicated that they do not keep track of that information.) If you are troubled by the fact that over one million of your fellow human beings have debased themselves by following the errant musings of an unhinged celebrity, just remember that we live in a nation of strangers, and also keep in mind that Sheen already held a Guinness world record: “Highest Paid TV Actor Per Episode — Current.” In light of recent events, they may want to think about removing that last word.

Jon Cryer plays Ellen DeGeneres' receptionist in sketch: 'I needed the work'

Take a look at that, eh? A different Two and a Half Men star has made a headline! After a week of nothing but Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Jon Cryer (a.k.a. the one without warlock wings) has stepped into the spotlight, appearing in a sketch that will air on Thursday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show that pokes fun at his currently unemployment. (Following Charlie Sheen’s combative radio interviews, CBS shut down filming on the final eight episodes of the season.) In the sketch, Cryer plays DeGeneres’ new receptionist: “I needed the work,” he shrugs, shortly after DeGeneres applauds his work ethic by telling him, “You do the work of two and a half men!” Tune in today to find out if the two dance enthusiasts pas de deux to “Try a Little Tenderness.” Watch the clip after the jump. Jimmy Fallon's 'Late Night' turns two, celebrates with a Brian Williams slow-jam

News anchor, sketch comedy enthusiast, and overall good sport: Seriously, after watching Brian Williams flex his impressive comedic muscles on Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show, it’s impossible to watch him report the news without somehow feeling tickled. (I blame the ever-present twinkle in his eye.) So what a relief it was to smile while he reports the news without feeling guilty on last night’s Late Night, during which Williams (or, will.i.ams, as Fallon calls him) slow-jammed the headline-making union fight in Wisconsin. Williams’ appearance wasn’t the only thing to celebrate on the late night show last night, though — Fallon’s series officially turned two years old. (It premiered March 9, 2009.) Congratulations, Jimmy. I take it your gift was hearing Williams deliver this line when you accused him of not knowing what SWV was: “If you’re referring to the SWV who were a seminal ’90s R&B group consisting of Coco, Taj, and Lelee, and whose songs included ‘Right Here’ and ‘Weak,’ yea, then I’ve heard of SWV, but they ain’t no union.” Oh, will.i.ams, I hope you left an encouraging message for yourself after that one. UPDATE: Looks like I missed the coolest (heh) part of Fallon’s show last night — the host was honored with a new Ben & Jerry’s flavor called Late Night Snack. In the ice cream: Vanilla bean ice cream, a salty caramel swirl, and fudge-covered potato chips. Mmm… sweet potatoesREAD FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Karen Rodriguez and Jacob Lusk get bilingual, on the scene for the Top 12 girls

Karen-Rodriguez-IdolImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/Fox/PictureGroup

The first thing you need to know about this season of American Idolthe very first thing — is that the members of the audience who sit behind the stage of the newly redesigned-to-actually-resemble-a-dome Idoldome are rowdy. They whistle. They catcall. They whoop and cheer when a wannabe diva points at them during her song. They demand Cory the Warm-up Comic trek up to their row so they can shake their moneymaker with enough middle-aged gusto that Jennifer Lopez is forced to smile and point. I’m thinking of calling them the peanut gallery. Smirkelstiltskin my snark demon is thinking of calling them the nosebleeders. Neither of us is satisfied with this nomenclature, but it was our very first day inside the Idoldome OS X, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.  READ FULL STORY »

Jeff Probst on episode 3 of 'Survivor: Redemption Island'

Each week, Survivor host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Redemption Island.

Zapatera decided to throw the challenge this week in order to vote off Russell. Is throwing a challenge ever a good idea, because I’ve never seen it lead to anything good?

The biggest risk in throwing a challenge is you give the other tribe confidence and often momentum. It’s leading by fear and it’s not a strong way to play Survivor. I do understand the reasoning. If you let someone like Russell stick around he could form a strong alliance and take over, or you could go to the merge with too many people and the people on the bottom decide to flip. Can’t say it’s always a bad idea, but agree with you, I’ve only seen it backfire. Maybe this time will be different. READ FULL STORY »
