'Smallville': Sighing over the cliches of 'Scion'

smallvilleImage Credit: Jack Rowand/The CWAnd the Smallville fan nation says: “Now this is more like it.” Last week’s aggressively goofy outing inspired by The Hangover elicited howls of outrage from longtime fans of the show for any number of reasons, from its silly premise to its clumsy send-off of Allison Mack’s Chloe. Last night’s episode “Scion” – in which Clark Kent (and fiancée Lois Lane) took on the responsibility of raising the Last Son of Krypton’s genetically engineered half-bro Conner (High School Musical’s Lucas Grabeel) – put the show back on the dark(seid) epic path of its final season following the absurdly light digression of “Fortune.” Judging from other reactions, longtime Smallville fans were much happier with “Scion.” Hopefully it was meal enough to sate them during the six-week Lenten fast that’s now upon us: There’s no new Smallville until April 15. Terminator statue in Ripley's Orlando Odditorium is, in fact, odd

Terminator-full-bodyThe Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Orlando Odditorium has acquired a life-size statue of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator that doubles as a tribute to the film industry and its biggest stars. The piece, by artist Enrique Ramos, took five months to create and uses a variety of media — “even a real vampire bat!” says the release — and will be accompanied by a motorcycle when it moves to Ripley’s Hollywood Odditorium later this year. Edward Meyer, Ripley’s VP of Exhibits and Archives, describes the statue as Ramos’ opus, “his 9th Symphony — both in complexity, detail, and historic scope. He has virtually told the history of the film industry in one spectacular sculpture.” Click here to see a large full body shot, and see how many films and stars you can pick out. (Spoiler: That’s Cameron Diaz on his forehead and Julia Roberts on his cheek.) We got the full list, which we’ll paste below. The sculpture seems, well, not all that thrilling at first. But when you see two of the close-ups, it becomes slightly cooler…  READ FULL STORY »

This week's trailers: 'Arthur,' 'Water for Elephants,' and 'Kung Fu Panda 2'

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

kung-fu-panda_180.jpg?w=150&h=112When animals attack… you get something a bit like this week’s trailers. First, Po gets himself into a second round of trouble in Kung Fu Panda 2. Then we’ve got a new look at Water for Elephants, featuring the biggest and most majestic of all creatures: Robert Pattinson. And finally, there’s another look at the Russell Brand comedy Arthur, in which Brand dresses up like a giant bear. Okay, so it’s a gummy bear, but these themes are tough, folks. Enjoy — and don’t forget to let us know which movie you’re wild about in the comments!  READ FULL STORY »

This Week on Stage: Frances McDormand plays a downtrodden Southie in Broadway’s ‘Good People’

Good-People_Mcdormand-DonovanImage Credit: Joan Marcus Oscar winner and Tony nominee Frances McDormand returned to the Great White Way this week with the opening of David Lindsay-Abaire’s new south Boston-set Good People.  As a single, unemployed mother who reaches out to her prosperous high school sweetheart (Tate Donovan) for help, McDormand relays “a potent mix of prickly aggression and bruised feeling withdrawal” according to stage editor Thom Geier. The drama, which earned an A- from Geier, is “remarkable and timely” under “Daniel Sullivan’s crisp direction…but the standout is McDormand in a role of great complexity and subtlety…[she] captures all of Margaret’s contradictions with sensitivity and depth.”  READ FULL STORY »

Quick, baby rhinoceros: Trade lives with me!

ryan-gosling-zooImage Credit: Cincinnati Zoo/Splash News I have so much going for me. I’m alive. I can walk. It was Kids’ Menu Friday at the Time Inc. cafeteria. So if I truly can’t I get over my jealousy of a Cincinnati Zoo rhino named Nikki, it’s gonna be a looooooooong weekend. (Yes!)

Steve Carell finishes filming on 'The Office' today

Ausiello-Tour-Office-CarellImage Credit: Trae Patton/NBCSix years ago, Steve Carell was still best known for his stint on The Daily Show, plus the occasional bit part in a big Hollywood movie, where he would inevitably steal scenes out from under bigger comedy superstars like Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell. Today, Carell is one of those big comedy superstars — the sort of multi-talented performer who can play a genial everyguy (Date Night) or a slightly off-kilter loon (Get Smart, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), with the occasional furlough into animated work (Despicable Me, Horton Hears a Who!.) Incredibly, Carell has become a movie star without ever ditching his day job on The Office, which makes him a genuine rarity in the Hollywood pantheon. (Even the tragically-handsome George Clooney didn’t have a big, non-Batman hit until he left ER.) Office co-star Rainn Wilson just tweeted that today is Steve Carell’s final day of filming on the sitcom. We shouldn’t say goodbye to Carell just yet. There are still a few more episodes with Michael Scott, and the actor’s post-Office schedule is packed with intriguing movie projects. But let’s all take a moment to consider the end of an era. And let’s thank Carell for all the funny/awkward/sad Office memories — TV won’t be the same without him.

'Avatar 2' might go under the sea

avatar-2Image Credit: Weta; DisneyJames Cameron says that the first sequel to Avatar won’t come out until Christmas 2014 (…which probably means the meticulous director will actually release it in summer 2016.) So we should be skeptical about any plot rumors. Still, this is too fascinating to not at least chat about: Avatar co-star Michelle Rodriguez has told the Associated Press that Avatar 2 will bet set at least partially underwater. Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, had no comment about the “underwater” plotline, but considering the director’s history with watery movies, this rumor rings at least a little bit true. Would you want to see the Avatar sequels go under the sea? READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch Confessional: The song you can't bear to hear because it reminds you of high school mortification?

I recently purchased En Vogue’s “Hold On” off iTunes for $0.69. It played on my iPod for the first time this morning during my commute, and I had to shut it off immediately. I had a flashback to a high school dance marathon, and more specifically, to three friends and I “performing” that song in a lip-synch contest. We had our own choreography, but the only move I actually remember — one hand to forehead, one hand on waist, and step with hip roll — we did steal from the video, embedded below. Naturally, I need to hear your horror stories so I know I’m not alone. What song can’t you bear to listen to because it reminds you of high school mortification?  READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': All-time most painful early exits?

Idol-painful-early-exitsImage Credit: Michael Becker/Fox; Ray Mickshaw/Fox; Michael Becker/FoxWith American Idol fans — and our recapper Annie Barrett — still lamenting the early ousting of Kendra Chantelle (I was equally sad to see rocker Lauren Turner fail to make the Top 13), it feels like the right time to ask which early exists on Idol still upset you, even if they happened all the way back in season 1. Of course, Jennifer Hudson and Alex Lambert come to mind as gone-too-soon contestants. But dig deep, PopWatchers. Maybe you’ll discover you weren’t the only one who loved Aloha Mischeaux (Hi, Slezak.)
