'American Idol': What are your season 10 pet peeves?

american-idol-3-30

As season 10 of American Idol continued last night, my biggest pet peeve of the season — the increased involvement of family in the Idoldome — hit a new high. I’m happy Scotty McCreery loves his grandma, but I don’t need to hear him say it during his performance. Even if it’s a genuine gesture, it comes off as a ploy to tug at voters’ heartstrings. Just sing. There’s time in the pre-song package and post-song interview to give grandma the national TV shout-out she deserves.

Another pet peeve being discussed around PopWatch HQ: The ladies’ use of dramatic pageant arm.

Your turn.

Jeff Probst on episode 7 of 'Survivor: Redemption Island'

Each week, Survivor host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Redemption Island.

You and I both really liked Sarita going into this game, at least as a personality if not a player. What has happened to her out there? I’ve seen none of the quirky spunk that she displayed in my pre-game chat with her.
I think the game overwhelmed Sarita. I don’t think she’ll ever admit it but I think it was more than she anticipated, which happens quite often to players. Survivor requires that you throw yourself headfirst into the game. So far, she hasn’t. She’s in a pickle now… to fight or not to fight at RI. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' on the scene for the Top 11 (take 2) performance night: Scotty's grandma and James' flaming piano

“Oh is Justin Bieber coming tonight?” asked the perfectly coifed woman named Eileen, prior to the start of last night’s American Idol. Eileen looked about the Idoldome in a mild panic, her green eyeshadow matching her jade jewelry matching her dusty green denim outfit, i.e. the Hip Grandma Look, which only accentuated the beautiful strangeness of her question. Finally, Eileen threw back her head in a jarring roar of laughter. “I don’t think he’s coming!”

So basically I’m saying that American Idol takes all kinds, from hip-and-possibly-arch-villain grandmas, to young adults brandishing signs that read “Decadent deliCASEY yummy,” to Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who sat one row behind me and appears to be a big fan of Casey, Pia, Jacob and Haley, in roughly that order. But before we dive any deeper into the behind the scenery of the Top 11 (take two) performances of the Elton John catalogue, I feel compelled to reiterate quickly something longtime readers of our Idol On the Scene columns have heard many times already: Things sound very different inside the Idoldome than they do on your TV. From Naima’s reggae risk to Casey’s stripped-down shot at redemption, American Idol vocal coach and arranger Debra Byrd and associate music director and arranger Michael Orland had a great deal to say about the Top 11 (take two) performances for Elton John week. For 10 seasons on Idol, Byrd and Orland have been on the front lines with the contestants, from Hollywood Week to the grand finale in May. The two work with the contestants on their respective songs, helping them learn how best to shine on the Idol stage and in front of a national TV audience. As we have for the Top 13, 12, and 11 (take one), we spoke with Byrd and Orland backstage at Idol HQ after the show about the contestants and their musical journey this past week. Check out their thoughts below:  READ FULL STORY »

Gail Simmons blogs the 'Top Chef: All-Stars' season finale

Gail-Simmons As told to Archana Ram.

I think we accomplished exactly what we set out to do this season. We brought back 18 of the most talented chefs on the show who did not win to get them back in the kitchen to see how they did, but also we stretched the show even further — took the challenges further, made things more complicated, exciting and delicious. I’m really amazed, looking back, at how much great food there was, how much I learned about the chefs, and how much I learned about food. I think every chef on this season has a lot to be proud of. We made them work for it, that’s for sure. READ FULL STORY »

'Justified': What was in Coover's bag? We've got the answer.

Justified

You’ve gotta love Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), and you’ve gotta love to hate those Bennett boys, Dickie (Jeremy Davies) and Coover (Brad William Henke). This week, we saw the duo bring a little friend along while trying to intimidate Harlan resident Reggie, and later our beloved Boyd (Walton Goggins, pictured), so they’d halt relations with Black Pike, the mining company Boyd has been helping secure land. Ava (Joelle Carter) put a bullet in the bag, and broke Coover’s heart. “You killed Charlie!” But what was he?  READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Behind the scenes at EW's photo shoot!

As you no doubt saw on Wednesday’s episode of American Idol, the top 11 contestants got all gussied up this week for a glamorous Entertainment Weekly photo shoot celebrating them all making the cut for the show’s big summer tour. In the first of many behind-the-scenes peeks at the shoot, see what the Idols think about their fancy ensembles. Who loves to get dolled up? Who is “always nervous” about being styled? Who picked out a dress once modeled by Kim Kardashian? (Hint: not Paul.) And, most important of all, would James “The Durbs” Durbin go sans tail? All will be revealed in the video clip below! Then check back throughout the next week for additional behind-the-scenes goodies. And for more reality-related ramblings, follow me on Twitter @EWDaltonRoss. READ FULL STORY »

Update: Annie’s recap is live. Hi, guys. The bitch is back.

Now that we’ve prepared ourselves for the terrifying prospect of seeing EW’s Dalton Ross in HD (he’ll be in a segment about the top 11′s fantabulous March 28 EW photo shoot) and debated which songs they should sing and which pieces of Elton’s iconic ’70s wardrobe the contestants should attempt to reprise (okay, maybe that one was all me), it’s time to watch the Top 11 fling themselves at the feet of the three Fates… and then gossip about ‘em! 'Glee': Jonathan Groff returning. Is Rachel going to forgive him? SHOULD she?

Glee-Groff-Lea-Power

Now that we know Jesse’s on his way back to McKinley High in the finale three episodes of this season, my mind is percolating, Gleeks.

Word is that Jesse (Jonathan Groff) returns to apologize to Rachel — perhaps with the intention of getting her back. This news originally thrilled me, but then a thought popped into my Glee-brain: Wait, did we forget how we left St. Berry?

Um, he egged her, people! Broke an egg on her head like he broke the heart in her sweater-covered chest. Awful! I remember being upset. I mean, completely inconsolable. I may have even bitterly glared at him when we last saw him in “Journey.”
