Skittles videos make me question my sense of humor. Am I alone?

It looks as though a lot of time and money went into a new campaign for Skittles. Of the five videos I first viewed via AdFreak, two were actually funny to me (“Cat,” pictured, and “War Finger”*), two fell flat (“Hitchhiker” and “Cage Cop”), and one was just oddly unsettling (“Skittles Girl”). I think I have a good sense of humor, but I could be wrong. Watch them below and tell me which ones work for you.

'American Idol': Who will go home tonight? Plus: The case for Jacob Lusk

idol-elimination

Two contestants on American Idol will be sent home tonight. The judges save is no longer in play. The stress could not be more intense. Why am I typing like Ryan Seacrest talks? Why do we do anything in this world?

While you ponder that existential question, a brief tour of recent Idol history: When Matt Giraud was saved during Top 7 week in Season 8, wild card contestant Anoop Desai and early producer favorite/frontrunner Lil Rounds were sent home the next week. When Michael Lynche was saved during Top 9 week in Season 9, very early producer favorites/frontrunners Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens packed their bags the following week — while why-is-he-still-here Abercrombie employee Tim Urban flashed his Cheshire grin from the wings. So what does this tell us about who will go home tonight?  READ FULL STORY »

John Travolta likely set to play John Gotti. Do you prefer your Travolta family-friendly, or bad-ass?

Travoltas

Seems John Travolta was given an offer he couldn’t refuse: As EW anticipated in January, the Pulp Fiction actor is likely a lock to play John Gotti in Gotti: Three Generations, a biopic centered on the infamous crime family. Though a rep for the production company behind the project — Fiore Films — is not officially confirming the casting news yet, he tells EW that a press conference with Travolta, Gotti’s son John A. Gotti, and Nick Cassavetes (who is set to direct the film) has been scheduled for April 12 in New York. (It’s hard to imagine Travolta won’t be named Gotti at the press conference.)

Even though he’s not officially set as Gotti, the news makes me smile wide enough to fit an orange inside. Not only am I excited about the prospect of Travolta returning to his East Coast roots, but I’m also pumped to see the actor revisit breaking out the bad. Because as much as I enjoyed Hairspray and Look Who’s Talking, I’ll admit that I prefer my Travolta evil. READ FULL STORY »

Baseball is back: Finally, something to talk about with your father-in-law

Tags: , , Movies

The Mets are in first place! The Mets are in first place! Well, tied for first place, technically. For a few more hours. Yes, boys and girls, put on your eye-black, adjust your junk, and dislocate your jaw on six giant pieces of Hubba-Bubba: Today is Opening Day in six cities across the country (weather permitting), and until that first pitch is tossed, every team has hope (as every team is still undefeated).

Even with the front pages dominated by the Middle East, earthquakes, and financial instability, it’s comforting to know that the lullaby of radio baseball will put me to sleep tonight — and for the next seven months. It’s exciting to predict how many games it will take before radio call-in sideshow Jerome from Manhattan turns on his beloved Yankees. And it’s a blessing to finally have that go-to topic during those awkward silences with my father-in-law.

As Terence Mann (James Earl Jones) says in Field of Dreams, “The one constant through all the years*, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: It’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.” READ FULL STORY »

'Sweet Valley High' returns: Or, why nostalgia trumps taste

Sweet-Valley-Confidential

Sweet Valley High has returned to bookstores today with a where-are-they-now sequel, Sweet Valley Confidential. And because of this, I am having a lot of feelings. Like, dear-diary, dot-your-I’s-with-hearts feelings. Here is what happens the minute I hear the words Sweet Valley and conjure images of its endless series of ’80s paperbacks about gorgeous California-blond twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield: In my mind, I am suddenly lounging on the floor of the Oak Forest Public Library in the Young Adult aisle in the back left corner on the second floor, leaning against the several shelves containing the battered SVH selection in its entirety. I am tearing through Dear Sister, in which good-girl Elizabeth awakes from a coma acting like popular-girl Jessica (lining her eyes with kohl pencil and everything!), in one sitting so that I can then take the next two, Heartbreaker and Racing Hearts, with me. I smell of Love’s Baby Soft perfume because while I’m engrossed in the Wakefields’ lives, I’m also hoping for my own storyline to happen here; I’m hoping the love of my seventh-grade life, Greg Blakely, will happen to show up here at the library to study. He’s smart. He lives nearby. Some days this happens, and he even says dreamy things to me like, “I saw your school picture. It’s really good this year. Much better than last year’s.”

Most days, however, Greg’s a no-show. But I can get through it because I’m spending most of my afternoons in Sweet Valley anyway. READ FULL STORY »

'Green Lantern': Geoffrey Rush will voice Tomar-Re. Watch your back, Admiral Ackbar!

The Green Lantern movie is coming out in a few months, but they just cast one pivotal role: As the Los Angeles Times first reported, Geoffrey Rush has officially signed on to voice Tomar-Re, a prominent member of the intergalactic peace-keeping force known as the Green Lantern Corps. Warner Bros. confirmed to EW that the Australian actor, who recently received his fourth Oscar nomination for The King’s Speech, has already recorded his voice role for the film. (When you factor in Rush’s role in this summer’s Pirates 4, the guy’s having a regular “Mid-’90s Jeff Goldblum” moment.) Rush instantly classes up every project he works on, but this could be a moment of seismic importance for sci-fi film fans. After all, it’s been almost three decades since an epic science-fiction film has featured a noble, wise, dripping-with-gravitas fish-headed alien. I’m talking about Return of the Jedi‘s Admiral Ackbar, famous for his MacArthur-like declarations like “Our cruisers can’t repel firepower of that magnitude!” and “It’s a trap!” Could Rush’s Tomar-Re usurp Ackbar as the world’s favorite fish-headed ET? Let’s run down each character’s vital statistics: READ FULL STORY »

'Top Chef: All-Stars' winner speaks: 'It was important for me to embody the spirit of the underdog'

[SPOILER ALERT! Do not click ahead if you haven't yet seen last night's finale!] Last night, Mike Isabella and Richard Blais duked it out for the title of Top Chef All-Star. They each created their own restaurants, which gave them a chance to show Tom, Padma, Gail, and guest judges Lidia Bastianich and Hubert Keller what they’re truly all about. And the honor went to…

Can Justin Bieber bring the funny?

Bieber-Kutcher

Image Credit: Landmark/PR Photos; Kristy Sparow/WireImage.com

Hope and Crosby. Martin and Lewis. Bieber and Kutcher? According to the Los Angeles Times, teenage singing sensation Justin Bieber is in talks to star opposite Punk’d host Ashton Kutcher in What Would Kenny Do?, a Sony project about a struggling high school kid who gets some guidance from a grown-up version of himself. (For the record, Kutcher would play the grown-up version.) At least this isn’t another body-switching comedy, in the spirit of 17 Again or Like Father, Like Son (though it does echo the plot of Bruce Willis’ The Kid.) READ FULL STORY »

Adam Scott models raincoats. And I care. Rising star status officially confirmed.

Ben Watts/GQ

I’ve felt my appreciation for Adam Scott growing for awhile now. I was one of those people who asked, “Why wasn’t he on EW’s Parks and Recreation cover?” (Here’s why, in his own words.) Once the chemistry between his Ben and Amy Poehler’s Leslie became clear, Parks and Recreation was suddenly the DVR’d Thursday night comedy I had to watch first. And just this morning, I got an email telling me that he’s modeling the latest raincoats in the April issue of GQ, and I immediately flipped through the online photo gallery. (What I learned? Rain makes men run.)

So, yes, I believe Adam Scott’s rising star status has been confirmed in my eyes. When did you know? (Don’t feel ashamed to say, “After I sat through Monster-in-Law again on TBS to watch him tell Elaine Stritch ‘I love you’ after she berates Jane Fonda.”)

'Soul Surfer' premiere: Lil' Bethany Hamilton is all grown up

Remember 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton, the cute little blond girl who in 2003 was on all the morning news programs sharing the harrowing tale of how she lost an arm in shark attack? Well, she’s all grown up now. Last night, the professional surfer was on the red carpet with (from left) Carrie Underwood, AnnaSophia Robb, Helen Hunt, and Lorraine Nicholson for the premiere of Soul Surfer, the movie about her amazing return to the top of her sport. And frankly, the always-beautiful Ms. Carrie has nothing on the statuesque athlete, now 21, who did all the surfing stunt work in the movie and helped teach Robb, who plays her, how to surf. Inspirational, tough, and beautiful — quite a package, and one I wouldn’t mind seeing walk more red carpets in the future.
