Rebecca Black's 'Friday' is bringing in the dough

Rebecca-Black

Are you sitting down? Good, because I’ve got some shocking news. According to Forbes, “Friday” — the insipid but catchy tune created by Ark Music Factory and performed by shiny-haired 13-year-old Rebecca Black — is pulling in some serious bank.

As of a few seconds ago, Black’s video has some 33.5 million views on YouTube. READ FULL STORY »

Charlie Sheen kisses Jimmy Kimmel on his very moist lips

Last night a Charlie Sheen tornado ripped through the Jimmy Kimmel Live set during a segment with Mark Cuban. The… actor? performer? let’s just say “self-promoting celebrity subject of international intrigue” stormed out to uproarious cheering, hugged Cuban, gave Kimmel a big sloppy kiss on the mouth, then tossed t-shirts to the audience emblazoned with various Sheenian slogans, like the kitty-cat “Tiger Blood” shirt, and a Sheen portrait with “winning” written underneath (Cuban grabbed one of those for himself). Then, after giving Kimmel a coffee mug with pictures of cartoon foxes pasted onto it, the warlock was off again. “I have a show to write, dammit!” he told the disappointed crowd.

Heck knows what’s gonna happen to this guy’s career after all this insanity. But it sure seemed like he had that Kimmel crowd eating out of his hand last night. Video below. READ FULL STORY »

'RuPaul's Drag Race': Did Carmen Carrera just give up? And did judge Michelle Visage really just flash her twins?

Michelle-Drag-race

As a contestant on a reality competition show, there quite possibly might come a point where you survey your competitors, look at how far you still have to go, and just say: “Screw it. I’m not trying anymore.” As evidenced by last night’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, that very much seemed to be what happened with one-time favorite Carmen Carrera, who found it difficult to muster much of an effort with any of the challenges that were laid on in front of her. Let’s look at the tale of the tape that led to Carmen’s eventual dismissal.

'Pretty Little Liars' finale: Allison's death (maybe) solved, another character (maybe) dead, and more mystery to come

Pretty-Little-Liars

Look, I’m not saying Pretty Little Liars is deep or witty or saying anything beyond, “Our cast is gorgeous and our mystery is elaborate.” This show is, in fact, the very definition of an indulgent guilty pleasure. But, wow, does this junior version of Desperate Housewives deliver on the cliffhangers — better than Desperate Housewives ever did after its phenomenal first season. Watching Pretty Little Liars is like watching someone juggle fire or spin plates; you keep watching thinking it’s got to eventually fall apart, but so far, the juggling continues, and the plates stay in the air. Which is a complicated way of saying that Monday’s season finale did what so many greater shows fail to do: It delivered satisfying answers to a host of questions while still leaving plenty more hanging, and packing a doozy of a cliffhanger. [We'll save any spoilerish stuff for after the jump here, so DO NOT CLICK THROUGH UNLESS YOU ALREADY WATCHED.]

Update: Annie’s recap is live! And so are the Hidden Gems of Week 1!

Twelve i’s for 12 seasons, right?! Oh, dear Lord (Mirrorballus). Welcome back, DANCMSTRs, to another round of ballroom hysteria! Chat about tonight’s two-hour premiere during and after the show, then come back later for Lynette Rice’s on-the-scene interviews with the cast and my full episode recap!

Note: There’s no need to watch all those pesky commercials about life support machines and the prescription meds you aren’t really sure you should even be taking. Why put yourself through it? Instead, click through my preliminary ranking of the 11 season 12 contestants — based purely on the poses, facial expressions, and outfits from the ABC promo photos. I like to call this “the scientific method.” For now, it works. Next week: Totally different story.

And as always, nominate your Hidden Gems of the Week in the comments!

XOXO,

Sammy Hagar talks about his alien encounter (again) in his new memoir. NOW will you buy his book?

A few weeks ago, Sammy Hagar turned a few long-haired heads with some excerpts from his new memoir, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, which were none too kind to his old frenemy Eddie Van Halen. “None too kind” may be a kind way of putting it: The former Van Halen singer/solo artist/current Chickenfoot frontman basically paints out the guitar god as an unstable and inebriated hobo-in-training when the two re-joined forces for an unpleasant reunion tour in 2004. (“He was missing a number of teeth and the ones he had left were black…. He told me he cured himself by having pieces of his tongue liquified and injected into his body. He also told me when he had his hip replacement, he stayed awake through the operation and helped the doctors drill the hole. What a fruitcake.”)

But the Red Rocker has what many Earthlings would consider to be outlandish ideas of his own. READ FULL STORY »

Twitter at five years old: The death of grammar? Or the rise of haiku?

Today, Twitter is celebrating what Grammar Fascists are likely lamenting: The five-year anniversary of Twitter. That’s right — back on March 21, 2006, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey posted the very first Tweet, which simply read, “inviting coworkers.” Since then, the social networking site has become the home of celebrities’ self-promotion, political endorsements, embarrassing proclamations — but, mostly, misspellings. Now, at five years old, we ask: Has Twitter become the death of grammar? Or just the rise of the haiku? READ FULL STORY »

'Prison Break' character T-Bag was on 'Breakout Kings' last night. What other characters would you like to see on TV again?

Watching Theodore Bagwell on Breakout Kings last night made my heart ache for Prison Break. (Yes, the whole series — not just season 1.)

If you would have asked me several months ago — before anyone saw a lick of footage from Breakout Kings — I would have rejected the idea of his return to television outside the PB-verse. Sure, the show comes from the same great creative team, but I still probably would have scoffed and laughed at the ridiculous notion. “T-Bag belongs within the world of Michael Scofield and Co. and only in that world,” I would have said. And I would have been dead wrong.  READ FULL STORY »

'Hawaii Five-0': Three ways this chase scene from tonight's episode could've been better

On tonight’s Hawaii Five-0, the team investigates the murder of a sci-fi fan, which somehow leads McGarrett on the beach foot chase in the preview below (and also means we’ll have at least one square on our Hawaii Five-0 bingo card — Alex O’Loughlin runs real fast — filled in). It’s like the pop culture gods chose today to look down at EW and say, “Our good sons and daughters: You have proved your patience and tolerance by making Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’ a YouTube hit. And for that, we will reward you.” And reward us they have. For only divine intervention could create a cast like this one for the New York Philharmonic’s upcoming production of Company: According to The New York Times, Two and a Half Men‘s Jon Cryer and Mad Men‘s Christina Hendricks have joined Neil Patrick Harris, Martha Plimpton, Anika Noni Rose, Patti LuPone, and Stephen Colbert in the play, which runs from April 7-9.
