Jeff Probst on episode 6 of 'Survivor: Redemption Island'

Each week, Survivor host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Redemption Island.

David made a big argument about how keeping someone who can help in challenges is much more important than keeping someone you can trust, and while I don’t want to minimize the importance of going into a merge with numbers, haven’t we also seen on seasons like Tocantins and Samoa that a united smaller group is often more effective than a splintered larger one? What’s your take?

It depends on the situation. It can go either way.  I think this is more about David trying to improve his place in the alliance.  He is so good at the oral argument he could argue either side.  Sarita is still in trouble.  She’s got to pull up her britches and start getting dirty. Continuing the exclusive interviews that we launched during the Top 13 and Top 12 weeks, American Idol vocal coach and arranger Debra Byrd and associate music director and arranger Michael Orland chatted with EW following the Top 11 performance show last night. For Idol‘s 10 seasons, Byrd and Orland have been on the front lines with the contestants, from Hollywood Week to the grand finale in May. The two work with the contestants on their respective songs, helping them shine on the Idol stage and in front of a national TV audience. Click through to read their take on this week’s “Motown Night” show, including what Byrd thought of Jacob Lusk’s big night, the magic behind what Scotty McCreery did with his song “For Once in My Life,” Naima’s conviction when planning her performance, and why Orland disagrees with Randy’s critique of James Durbin’s song.

'American Idol' on the scene for Top 11 performance night: 'Motown Night' ignites the Idoldome

American Idol fans, behold the great power of “Motown Night”! I don’t know exactly how the show played on television because I was inside the Idoldome, watching live from my not-so-comfy perch in row 6, but the Supremes-, Stevie-, and Smokey-infused night was surely one to remember from inside the belly of the beast out here in Hollywood. After last week’s somewhat of a letdown performance episode that found many of our beloved contestants (I’m really not being facetious, trusies!) hitting sour notes, this week couldn’t have been more brilliantly upbeat, fun, and — yes! — totally engaging.

Gail Simmons blogs 'Top Chef: All-Stars' episode 15

Gail-Simmons As told to Archana Ram.

Antonia, Richard and Mike had stayed consistent and strong throughout the season. Each of them had won a ton of challenges and kept moving. Each of them individually wowed us. It never plays out quite how you think, but I was really glad they were the final three.

The whole Quickfire was absurd. We knew it was absurd. We just kept piling it on to see how they’d react. They all did really well considering all the twists they were given. They all delivered edible food, which I think is a pretty big accomplishment at that stage. Mike had one pot and nothing else. You never how someone else will react to the challenge you give them, and they also never knew there would be a second twist. Cooking with one pot is a challenge but a realistic one. But cooking with one hand behind your back or tied to someone else isn’t. Simple challenges can be the hardest, and I think it’s because they over-prepare. They’re not able to stand back and simplify. They get caught up in trying to do too much. But in this case, the three of them are actually really good at restraint. READ FULL STORY »

NeNe Leakes calls Star Jones 'bossy, manipulative, conniving, and I'm not even being funny'

Remember that episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta when NeNe Leakes was blowing her interview with Jermaine Dupri so she started making digs about Kim Zolciak’s age? That’s kind of the same impulse that seems to be driving her during her publicity blitz for Celebrity Apprentice. She just can’t stop grinding her heel into fellow contestant Star Jones. Perhaps because she knows full well that the promise of these digs is what keeps getting her ink or airtime. (Not the most noble way to make a name for oneself.) Today on The Ellen Degeneres Show, under her perpetual guise of just telling it like it is, she pronounced Jones “bossy, manipulative, conniving, and I’m not even being funny, I think that is real, I honestly think that is who she is.” You can check out the full clip below: READ FULL STORY »

The Glenn Beck Network. Yes, it could happen.

Oprah has a network. Ted Turner launched several networks. Martha Stewart has a network (or at least hours of face time on the Hallmark Channel). And now it looks like Glenn Beck might be getting a piece of the dial, too. According to a story in yesterday’s New York Times, if Beck leaves Fox News when his contract runs out at the end of this year, one of the options he’s considering is fronting his own TV channel. Already, the Times notes, Beck has been staffing up his independent media company, Mercury Radio Arts, and churning out pay content for the web — which has brought in $4 million. How big a step would it be for him take it to the next level, launching The Beck Channel on cable?  READ FULL STORY »

Paul Newman on Elizabeth Taylor: 'She knows her instrument and knows how to make it work.'

Categories: In Memoriam, Movies

“What can you say about a legend?” That’s the question Paul Newman asked in a Turner Classic Movies tribute he made about Elizabeth Taylor, and it turns out the legend-in-his-own-right had plenty to say about his Cat on a Hot Tin Roof co-star. (Newman passed away from cancer at 83 in 2008, and Taylor died this morning at 79 of congestive heart failure.) Here are my top three favorite things Newman says about Taylor:  READ FULL STORY »

Elizabeth Taylor on 'General Hospital': Remembering the legend's fascinating, and goofy, soap stint

Daytime soaps fans still talk about that time when Hollywood royalty came out to play. Like everything she did, Elizabeth Taylor’s multi-episode arc on General Hospital was big: She came at the height of the show’s popularity to play Helena Cassadine, wife of Mikos. (You remember Mikos, that guy who wanted to freeze the earth.) She was even at Luke and Laura’s wedding,  though off to the side and putting a curse on them .

With news of her passing, the show’s put out a statement: “We were honored to work with Elizabeth Taylor on General Hospital.  Her portrayal of Helena was a defining moment for the show and an extraordinary experience for everyone involved.  She was a great talent, a gracious lady, and a rare presence.  We are deeply saddened by her passing and send our deepest condolences to her family and friends.”

Her appearance on the show was vintage grand dame, but the blooper reel below shows the playful, joyous side of Mrs.  Taylor. And that laugh! Oh, that laugh…
