'Book of Mormon': Matt Stone and Trey Parker share their favorite musicals -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

The Book of Mormon officially opens tonight at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre. But co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker (who wrote the musical, along with Avenue Q‘s Robert Lopez) have long histories with musical theater — going all the way back to Parker’s high school days in a questionable production of The Flower Drum Song. In the somewhat NSFW video below, the South Park pair talk about their favorite musicals, their most nerve-wracking Mormon moments, and why they aren’t surprised by the lack of controversy surrounding their dirty-mouthed show about one of America’s most controversial religious groups. Check out the full interview after the jump! READ FULL STORY »

'Super 8' footage reminds me there are live-action movies starring kids that I can relate to

super-8

Last night, Paramount and director J.J. Abrams presented a 20-minute sneak peek at two scenes from Super 8 to a small audience in New York. They were centered around moments we’ve all seen in the trailer: A group of 14-year-olds (including Elle Fanning and newcomer Joel Courtney, pictured) shooting their own Super 8 movie by the railroad tracks when a train derails and an unseen “thing” escapes, and that “thing” starts terrorizing a gas station attendant. Abrams asked writers not to spoil anything, so we won’t talk specifics. But I think it’s fair to discuss the conversations being had as we all filed out of the theater. READ FULL STORY »

'Hot in Cleveland' season finale: Betty White on the lam!

The finale of the second season of TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland once again ended in a cliffhanger, with Elka in serious trouble with the law, but we had a lot of fun getting to that point. Last night’s legal-themed episode began with a Law & Order-type voiceover: “In a situation comedy, there are two separate but equally important stories. The A story, which is about the comic of characters. And the B story, which is the same thing, but shorter. These are those stories.” So much was packed into this half hour that it’s hard to say what was the A and what was the B. (For an old school sitcom, all this sub-plot talk is awfully Community, right?) READ FULL STORY »

Hours after his close friend Elizabeth Taylor passed away in Los Angeles, Elton John took the stage at Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center to perform. “Today I lost a friend and you lost a hero named Elizabeth Taylor,” John told the crowd, according to CNN. “She stood up when no one was prepared to stand up and be counted against AIDS. She supported everybody in that with 1,000 percent of her body and her fiber. But most of all she loved people. She fought for the underdog. She was an incredible woman and I was privileged to have known her.” READ FULL STORY »

Harry Houdini gets Googled: Celebrating the great magician's 137th birthday

On March 24, 1874, a boy named Erik Weisz was born in Budapest. That little boy would go on to become one of the great celebrities of the early 20th century: An escapist, a magician, and all-around master-of-illusions who went by the stage name Harry Houdini. Today, Google celebrates the magician’s birthday with a snappy new logo that looks like an old-timey ticket to a magic show. In a twist worthy of the great illusionist himself, this celebration comes just one day after the death of Dorothy Young, Houdini’s last surviving stage assistant. Since there are currently two Houdini biopics in the works – one with I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence attached, the other to be based on the biography The Secret Life of Houdini — we may be witnessing the dawn of a Houdini Renaissance. So happy 137th birthday, Erik Weisz: Your best tricks may still ahead of you. Sorry, sorry, illusions. We all know what a trick is.

'American Idol': Jacob Lusk earns hugs from Steven Tyler and grandma. Warranted, weird, or both?

Steven Tyler broke from the judges’ table last night on American Idol, walked up on stage, and hugged Jacob Lusk (a.k.a. Baby Luther) after his performance of “You’re All I Need to Get By.” Host Ryan Seacrest then told Lusk to go give his grandmother a hug in the audience before inviting the first row up to embrace Lusk back on stage. Watch it all unfold below. READ FULL STORY »

'Duke Nukem Forever' delayed yet again, but this time we actually feel offended

It has been 15 years since Duke Nukem 3D injected the first-person shooter genre with a sense of humor and ambient nudity. In that time, empires have fallen, technology has evolved from “charmingly analog” to “dystopically digital,” eight Harry Potter movies have been made, and an entire generation of young gamers has grown up screaming epithets at their friends while playing Call of Duty. And, for 15 years, the sequel to Duke Nukem has been perpetually delayed, weathering the loss of several creative teams, the closure of its developer, a lawsuit, and possibly a plague of locusts. Nukem fans have come to accept the delays with a Waiting for Godot-like cynical patience. But this is just ridiculous. In a new video, Randy Pitchford, president of Forever‘s current developer Gearbox Studios, jauntily proclaims that there is absolutely no way Duke Nukem Forever will be delayed from its current May 3 perch. And then it gets delayed. Points for trying to make a joke out of this, but the forced jollity just comes off as weirdly rude, as if the developers are saying, “Suck on that, gamers!” Sometimes, it really is better to just send out a press release. Check out the video after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson talks about his return to the WWE on the eve of WrestleMania XXVII

the-Rock

“Ladies and gentlemen,” yelled an announcer five weeks ago on the WWE’s Raw, “Please welcome the host of WrestleMania 27.” The lights in the arena dimmed. A minute’s worth of anticipation built. Then, a voice… “If ya smeeeeelllll what The Rock is cookin’” came roaring from the speakers. And out came the man himself – scowling and posturing like he’d never left. Really though, Dwayne Johnson was gone for seven years.

Johnson, of course, used the sabbatical to become a force outside of the ring and on Hollywood movie sets. It worked. He’s since acted in Walking Tall, Get Smart, and The Game Plan among other films. On April 29 he’ll star in the latest installation of the Fast and the Furious series, Fast Five.

Endless cheers upon his entrance that Valentine’s Day evening confirmed wrestling fans missed him dearly. EW caught up with the people’s champ recently to talk about why he left the safe confines of studio sets and returned to the physically taxing, but oh, so entertaining life of smackdown-laying and slick-talking to jabronis. The Rock promises WrestleMania XXVII (April 3 on pay per view) will not be one to miss, and he hints that we can expect more from him after.

Chris Brown apologizes for 'GMA' meltdown

A day after erupting in his Good Morning America dressing room after host Robin Roberts asked him questions about his 2009 arrest for assaulting Rihanna, Chris Brown explained and apologized for his actions on BET’s 106 & Park. “First of all, I want to apologize to anybody who was startled in the office, or anybody who was offended or really looked, and [was] disappointed at my actions,” said Brown. “Because I’m disappointed in the way I acted.” Click below for fuzzy footage of his apology on 106 & Park.

But the singer maintains that GMA mislead him about the topics they would discuss, as he was under the impression that his appearance would strictly be about his new album, F.A.M.E. “I felt like they told us this just so they could get us on the show to exploit me. That’s what I thought. So I kind took it very, very hard,” said Brown. READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: Robert Pattinson Moves Beyond 'Twilight'

Twilight-fans, take heart: Robert Pattinson is every bit as good-looking and thick-maned as he appears onscreen. But don’t confuse him with his brooding characters — the 24-year-old actor is surprisingly open, chatty, and quick to laugh. Pattinson talked with EW last week about his upcoming film Water for Elephants (in theaters April 22), in which he plays a traveling-circus veterinarian who falls for the show’s star attraction, played by Reese Witherspoon. He also discussed what his future might look like once he’s finished with Twilight. “You can never really predict what an audience wants or how to maintain a career,” he says, “other than doing what you think is cool.” But, Pattinson laughs, “Generally, what I think is cool is what everyone else hates.”  READ FULL STORY »
