'The Office' proposal: How does it measure up?

the-office-carell-proposal

I know there’s a “That’s what he said” joke in that headline, and I’m pretty sure it was my subconscious that did that. I haven’t been able to get The Office off my brain since last night’s epic proposal. (Read the recap of the entire episode here.)

In case you weren’t there, Michael led Holly on a tour through the office, pointing out the places that were meaningful to them as a couple. “This is where Toby announced that he was going to Costa Rica. It was the happiest day of my life — until the day you came to replace him,” he told her in that sincere Michael way that never fails to tug at my heartstrings. He led her up the stairwell, to his office, through the office, finally ending at the door to the break room.

When he opened the door, the entire office staff was standing in a line, holding candles. Candles, people. READ FULL STORY »

Elizabeth Taylor: James Dean 'was molested by his minister,' says late star in lost interview

Elizabeth Taylor may have unfortunately passed on to the hot tin roof in the sky, but she’s still passing on gossip-y secrets from beyond the grave. Over at the Daily Beast, writer Kevin Sessums just released a delicious array of previously off-the-record statements from Taylor, dating from a 1997 interview that focused on the star’s AIDS activism. Some of Taylor’s statements just capture her charm: Upon being told that a prominent British politician has announced his support of gay marriage, Taylor says, “It doesn’t surprise me, really. When the English make a move, it’s usually a good one — though it does take them a while. Everybody thinks everybody is gay who comes from England anyway.” But Taylor also offers a bombshell about her fellow Hollywood legend James Dean, her co-star on Giant: “I loved Jimmy. I’m going to tell you something, but it’s off the record until I die. OK? When Jimmy was 11 and his mother passed away, he began to be molested by his minister. I think that haunted him the rest of his life. In fact, I know it did.” READ FULL STORY »

'Community' goes 'Pulp Fiction': Check out the big brain on Jeff!

Community

It makes total sense that Abed is a fan of Quentin Tarantino. Both have minds that are essentially Raiders of the Lost Ark warehouses filled with pop culture ephemera, both make references within references within references, and both can be extremely awkward when faced with the prospect of a normal, straightforward conversation. All of which is why dedicating an entire episode of Community to just making Pulp Fiction jokes would make complete sense and would probably be totally fantastic. But the writers on Community are too clever for that, and as the show progressed, the bespoke suits and gunplay of Pulp Fiction somehow morphed into the beige jackets and wordplay of My Dinner With Andre, combining one of the coolest movies of all time what is likely one of the least cool. (With the exception, of course, of the My Dinner With Andre action figures.) READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Was Casey Abrams the right use of the judges' save? Poll!

idol-casey-abrams

On last night’s American Idol, Casey Abrams only had to sing for his life for 25 seconds before the judges cut off the music and told him they were saving him from elimination. Watch it below. Perhaps the only person shocked was Casey Abrams, who, quite honestly, looked like he might collapse. (Ryan Seacrest seemed to follow Casey around, waiting to catch him.) As Casey said, he didn’t think they’d use their one save on him because there are still 11 people left on the show.

If America had fallen out of love with him this early, does he stand a chance of winning? (In a PopWatch poll yesterday, readers voted him fourth most likely to be crowned the next American Idol, after Pia Toscano, James Durbin, and Scotty McCreery.) But I say it was worth it: We were already tuning in each week to see what song he performed, but now we really want to tune in next week to see his attempt at redemption. (Two contestants will go home, so it best be good.) More importantly, Casey made the Idol tour. Seacrest said it was predetermined that should the judges use their save at this point, it would be the Top 11 instead of the Top 10 hitting the road. Abrams should definitely help sell tickets. Let’s take it to our own vote.

'30 Rock': It's time for a Plan B

30-Rock

Last night’s episode of 30 Rock hit a little too close to home. I, like Liz, am a writer. And last night’s episode just confirmed that I’ll never be able to jet set around the world in economy plus.

You see, while Tracy was still gone saving lives in Africa (AKA hiding out in New York), the network was putting TGS on a forced hiatus. Because you can’t have TGS with Tracy Jordan without Tracy Jordan. It’s an oxymoron, like liberal government, female scientists, and well-paid journalists. READ FULL STORY »

'Parks and Recreation': Camp Pawnee-wanna, we hold you in our hearts

Parks-And-Recreation-Aziz

Irony alert: By and large, the employees of Pawnee’s Parks and Recreation department actually kind of hate the great outdoors. April feels like she can’t breathe when the air is too fresh; Tom needs creature comforts like a soft-serve machine and DJ Roomba (DJ Roomba!) just to survive; Ben doesn’t even know that the floor is called the ground when it’s outside. (Though wait, is Ben technically an employee of the Parks department yet? Better not think about that one too hard.) So when Leslie forces our favorite government drones to leave the cozy confines of City Hall for a local camping ground, nobody’s happy but her. Luckily, their misery makes for some excellent comedy. 'American Idol' on the scene for Top 11 results night: What a show, what a show!

Idol-Hulk-Hogan-Durbin

There’s certainly a lot of time to fill in any American Idol results show, but wow oh wow was last night’s virtually stuffed with every trick in the book: Sugarland! Jennifer Hudson! Marc Anthony! Stevie Wonder! Hulk Hogan! Oh, and of course, there was the little matter of dealing with the whole elimination thing that’s the entire point of the show. And as you might guess — after what was one of the best performance episodes of American Idol in quite a long time — that area fired on all cylinders, too.

You’ve no doubt already heard the news, but in case you haven’t — SPOILER ALERT — Casey Abrams received the least votes from fans. But! In Idol‘s typically dramatic fashion, Casey began his “sing for his life” performance and was quickly interrupted by the judges, telling him that he wasn’t going anywhere and they were going to use their one save of the season on him. Shocker! But I’m not here to recap what aired on television — that’s what EW employs Annie Barrett for! No, I just want to share a handful of juicy bits from my time sitting in the audience during last night’s show, which played very well from inside the Idoldome. Here are my ramblings about what you might not have seen on the telly:

Oak Ridge Boys celebrate 30th anniversary of 'Elvira': 'It was the kind of song that everybody was singing'

Oak-Ridge-Boys-1981

My earliest memory is when I was six-years-old, standing beside my nine-year-old sister in the kitchen of my grandparents’ farmhouse, both of us holding brooms and singing the Oak Ridge Boys’ hit “Elvira” into the handles. I know I’m not alone. Most of my friends now in their mid-to-late thirties have a similar memory of belting out Joe Bonsall’s boozy verses and imitating bass Richard Sterban’s infamous “Giddy up, oom papa oom papa mow mow” chorus. The song went viral — or “Elviral,” as one of Bonsall’s friends says — in 1981, at a time when there was no Twitter, no Facebook, no YouTube. There was just country radio, and then pop radio, which helped it sell well over 2 million 45s.

For nine straight months, “It was the kind of song that everybody was singing,” Bonsall says 30 years later. READ FULL STORY »

Joyful, joyful 'Sister Act' musical starts Broadway previews

Categories: Movies, Stage/Theater

Are you there, God? Please make the Sister Act musical, which starts previews at the Broadway Theatre tonight, a half-decent homage to the Whoopi Goldberg film that briefly made catechism cool in 1992. Deliver it from the mostly tepid reviews that met its 2009 London debut. Let Xanadu’s Douglas Carter Beane, who officially joined the creative team last month (but tells EW he’d been working on the play since November) have added the laughs that British critics claimed the book by Emmy-winning Cheers writers Cheri and Bill Steinkellner lacked. And have faith that he didn’t touch what they liked about it: Its heart. “Sister Act is one of my favorite movies,” says Beane. “I want it to be a fun adventure for everybody. I come to shows and bring the silly stuff and the crying stuff — I’m here for the giggles and the tears.” READ FULL STORY »
