'Justified': What was in Coover's bag? We've got the answer.

Justified

You’ve gotta love Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), and you’ve gotta love to hate those Bennett boys, Dickie (Jeremy Davies) and Coover (Brad William Henke). This week, we saw the duo bring a little friend along while trying to intimidate Harlan resident Reggie, and later our beloved Boyd (Walton Goggins, pictured), so they’d halt relations with Black Pike, the mining company Boyd has been helping secure land. Ava (Joelle Carter) put a bullet in the bag, and broke Coover’s heart. “You killed Charlie!” But what was he?

In the minds of the writers, a badger, exec producer Graham Yost tells EW, conceding that not many people keep one as a pet. But “Charlie” wasn’t their idea. “We’re in the writers’ room, and we get a call from the set,” Yost says. “This is an idea Tim and his driver, Jay, have come up with. We debated it: Was it too Coen Brothers? Or was it just Coen Brothers enough? Honestly, it was like I was the vice president and it was the senate: Half the room said, ‘No way,’ and the other half said, ‘Oh come on, let’s do it.’ And I said, ‘Okay, let’s do it.’ It ended up being great.” We concur.

Love, love, love this show! The interactions between Raylan and Boyd are classic!

Agree about any Raylan/Boyd scene being gold.

The great/tragic thing about this season is that between Winona’s boneheaded betrayal of Raylan’s trust, Art almost certainly knowing what Raylan and Winona did, and the eternal scumbagginess of Arlo…Boyd just might be the best friend Raylan has right now!

    Thought it was a wolverine!

Tonight’s episode was the best of the season so far. Hopefully they are all this good as we head towards the end of the season.

Absolutely brilliant show, and tonight’s episode was the best so far. The previews for next week look amazing.

Justified is one of the best shows out there. The cast is a brilliant bit of ensemble. I am really enjoying the hell out of this season…the backwoods family mentality is just this side of corny, and played with enough tongue-in-cheek attitude to keep it from straying into cheese territory.

I am another fan! Granted, I started out smitten by Olyphant as Sheriff Seth Bullock on “Deadwood” and began watching because of that…but this is a really, really good show with wonderful ensemble characters, great dialogue they don’t have to censor. Everyone is a little morally conflicted. Boyd is a wonderful intelligent, warped character fighting his nature bright enough to dream of redemption, Megs Bennett, the young girl with the Bennetts, the Head Marshall.
I almost peed in my pants when I watched the boss Marshall with the bad knees chasing after the bank robber with emphysemia lugging as oxygen tank trying to run away from him last episode.

“Raylan will go talk to his people about that, he’s our Hillbilly Whisperer”.

I fully agree about the “chase” between bad-knees Art and the bank robber. I cried laughing every time I watched that scene.

I’m so happy to know this will be back for a 4th season.

Best show on Television. Literally. Please watch if you haven’t already, you will not be disappointed..

  • This is a great show, but…

it is starting to look like a rerun of “Hung.” Margo Martindale (who is brilliant), Natalie Zea (who is okay to look at but no acting range), and now the redhead from “Hung?” Are there no other actors available? She was unwatchable in “Hung” and she is here, too. Please, writers, do not have her and Raylan have a relationship. Please end her run on this show. The rest I can deal with, her, no.

I am with everyone..such a great show!! I love Timothy in Deadwood and that’s why I was soo happy to see this series. But take out that redhead, I agree!! Leave in Winona.

Didn’t we hear the bag rattle or hiss when it was first introduced? I knew what it was then. I love this show but it was ridiculous that Raylan was alone without backup, otherwise the writing is great. It’s also crazy that Coover wasn’t arrested for assaulting Raylan but guess the writers have plans for him. Has nobody heard of a satellite phone?

    • Linda

Raylan made a point of removing his badge making it a fight between two men..plain and simple.

Best. Show. Ever. My husband and I wait all week for this show, and it’s rare that we like the same show. Writing is quick, dialogue is intelligent AND hilarious–Please, please, please have a long life!

  • KC

Best show to ever grace my tv screen! I’m on pins and needles waiting for Mags “whoop-de-doo” next week.

    • T

Gotta agree. Really looking forward to that.

  • S.

Badger was my first thought, but then some of the sounds made me second guess myself, so glad to have it confirmed. Can we have a real recap now or is that asking too much?

    • kaydevo

Great recaps at AV Club and at Monkeys as Critics.

  • Cyndi

Yes, totally agree! What happened to the recaps for Justified? Every week I come here hoping for one, only to be disappointed. Come on, EW! Give the people what they want!

  • meels

The most terrifying part of the badger video was the snake at the top of the tree. How do they do that!?

  • Fan

I think I’ll watch anything with Timothy Olyphant.

    • the other Anne

Nah, it is all Boyd Crowder. I mean Walter Goggins. I adore him so much I watched the newest Predator movie…

      • side3

        …Walton Goggins….

      • nutmeg22

Boyd is darn attractive, too. I have to agree! But one woman that makes the show is Ma Bennett. Wow, I would not like to go up against her.

    • T

I thought so too, until I tried the Hitman movie. But I can forgive that.
