'Duke Nukem Forever' delayed yet again, but this time we actually feel offended

It has been 15 years since Duke Nukem 3D injected the first-person shooter genre with a sense of humor and ambient nudity. In that time, empires have fallen, technology has evolved from “charmingly analog” to “dystopically digital,” eight Harry Potter movies have been made, and an entire generation of young gamers has grown up screaming epithets at their friends while playing Call of Duty. And, for 15 years, the sequel to Duke Nukem has been perpetually delayed, weathering the loss of several creative teams, the closure of its developer, a lawsuit, and possibly a plague of locusts. Nukem fans have come to accept the delays with a Waiting for Godot-like cynical patience. But this is just ridiculous. In a new video, Randy Pitchford, president of Forever‘s current developer Gearbox Studios, jauntily proclaims that there is absolutely no way Duke Nukem Forever will be delayed from its current May 3 perch. And then it gets delayed. Points for trying to make a joke out of this, but the forced jollity just comes off as weirdly rude, as if the developers are saying, “Suck on that, gamers!” Sometimes, it really is better to just send out a press release. Check out the video after the jump…

I’ve seen lots of delays, but THIS is kind of funny. Well played, Gearbox. At least they are self-aware.

    • jmo

I thought it was funny too.

  • jonindo

Get over it. It’s A GAME. It’s only a month late.

    • Sean L.

      Actually…it’s about twelve years late.

  • Ben

I’m sure it will be out in time for Duke Nukem 3D’s 100th anniversary. Just be patient.

  • Peter

Nope, I thought it was great. A press release would have come off as insulting BS.

  • Rick Gershman

Yeah, I thought this was handled as well as possible too. After 15 years, if they need another six weeks to tweak a few things, it’s worth it. Cute video.

    • Matt

Agreed. I’d rather wait another month for the game to be the best it can be, rather than get an unpolished game after all these years.

  • Adam

    I’m so disappointed by this.

  • Mike B

If it’s not ready by now it will never be ready. What is the major problem they have to push it back a month? Why are they not saying the reason?

    • Mark

Most likely reason is they found some sort of major hardware compatibility issue or driver issue, or some sort of in game bug that hadn’t turned up before but was serious enough to warrant a fix a several more rounds of QA. Better to release 6 weeks later than to release with serious game breaking bugs. Or maybe they’re adding a new awesome feature they don’t want to announce. (A high res texture pack is a possibility as well)
Considering the game code was all started by a different, then bought up and had to be reworked and updated more, I think Gearbox turning things around fairly quickly. I think that most likely, textures and other graphical features may look a little behind the times because of all the original delays, but that also means older systems should be able to play it better.

Except that when Gearbox took over, they scrapped pretty much everything that had been done over the last 12 years with the title and re-did it with modern PC gaming standards in mind. This game will not run on “older systems” at all, it is a completely current game and engine, which will require current hardware to run.

Most likely they ran into some kind game-breaking bug. Given the incredibly quick turnaround Gearbox has had since taking over the title, that really shouldn’t be surprising.

@Mr. Franich – The way they chose to announce the delay was great. If you can’t laugh at yet another delay in the DNF saga, then you are far too serious about games.

      • kingofgrills

Actually, Gearbox did not scrap a ton of what was there. They came into the picture fairly recently, and tied several loose ends to finish up the game. Take a look at any of the in-game pics, or demo videos on YouTube, and you will see the game is definitely showing its age.

Still, I loved Duke Nuke’em 3D, and I have been waiting patiently for my pre-ordered copy. I hope Software Etc. still has my telephone number, so they can tell me when it arrives…

  • Julie

I thought it was really funny. Saw it the other day and liked that they can poke fun at themselves.

  • NatoWorld

Agree, this was funny, and very classy. Much better than a press release. I can’t even be annoyed at the extra wait, now.

  • C Low

Its time to kick a** & chew bubble gum!!!

  • James

Darren, gearbox had only taken over development of the game a few years ago, so it’s not like they were responsible for the entire delay, even most of it. They also released a statement which was very cathardic and apologetic. They handeled this perfectly, and I think that a simple press release would have been way more rude than this video, which I found not rude at all.

  • Vince from NYC

This game is Doomed.. After three 15 years of waiting I feel like it will never live up to what the nerds who crave it expect.

  • josh

I dunno, I thought that was actually kind of funny.

  • Ron Reagan

It is almost like the mindless masses waiting for the republicans trickle down economics to actually work. Never has never will. Keep waiting for your sweat and drippings off the corporate roast pig.

Hey, Dimwit. Guess what? YOU’RE the one living in the past if you don’t think the Repubs are still doing it. GTFO dumbass

  • shannon brown

duke nukem keeps getting delayed because the game sucks just like all the other duke nukem junk put it in the trash and forget about it

    • MrTeflon

@shannon brown Somehow I get the feeling you were in Diapers when the first 3D came out. Also I get this very strong feeling that you are a young Call Of Duty Fanboi.
